Subforum structure

Hey there,

Great job on the new version of the site.

However, it seems to carry an old issue we have here: the layout of the sub-forums. As it stands, Gamer's Hub is too far entrenched into off-topic, for example; it used to be a category of its own. Perhaps it would be better to return it to its original form and allow people to collapse it?

Alternatively, the sub-forums could be presented differently. Instead of a label "Sub-forums:" with a drop-down list, some other form of presentation that is less cluttered.

Ideas?

Honestly it'd probably make the most sense to merge AT LEAST Gamer's Hub, Programming, Roleplaying and Computer Tech with the main board.

Probably Medivh's Tower too.

Something Else could remain helpful from a moderation standpoint to dump some content in.

Doubt there's any vested interest in keeping the Legacy Social Groups, but in case there is, maybe lock the content and dump it in Something Else.

Game Development should be its own free-standing board similar to Sound/Music, Art/Design, etc.

Sure. And tutorials can probably be made invisible now that they have a big button in the top.

But this whole thread is about the data. If I make any changes to it in the beta, I will have to redo them when we migrate. It makes more sense to tackle this issue now on the current site as that is the master version of the site.

_too_ many, indeed.
It would make browsing the forum a lot smoother an experience if both the number of forums decreased (drastically), but also if the nesting of sub-forums was not as aggressive as currently.

Now I'm probably a lot more radical than you're implying (since I would opt for a single digit number of forums) but any step in this direction would be great still.

I took the liberty of moving this thread into Site Discussion and start reducing the number of forums and making things more clean.

I have made a new category similar to the Artist's Discussion but for Programmer's Discussion.

The old challenge section is inside the Recycle Bin. I would like to move all contents into OT and delete those forums.

I was sort of hoping to do something about the social groups too . I guess I could make a list of all RP threads and put that here in case anyone needs to find something.

Off-Topic, along with all its nested subforums, barely get any new replies or threads as it is. As far as I can tell people just use the Discord channels instead of posting in the forums. That's the main reason why I don't think all these separate boards make any sense. We're just decreasing the chance that a thread will even get a reply in the first place. And if people post a couple threads that get absolutely no attention, they'll stop posting threads. Unless they're posting machines like @pyf or @deepstrasz.

Normally an Off-Topic board would contain any and all topics not fit for the main scope of the site. But the way it's set up, most topics that would normally go in an Off-Topic board have their own (mostly unfrequented and unused) categories. Music? There's a sticky full of YouTube spam and an unfrequented board. Movies? Unused sticky thread. Gaming? We've got a board that nobody posts in. Sports? The outside is uncharted waters for any gaming community. Computer tech or programming? Their own unfrequented boards. What's left that a gaming community would normally want to talk about? If somebody wants to marry a slug, I guess Off-Topic has got you covered.

Granted what you've proposed is better than our current setup. But I don't see how it would sort out the root issue. Not even sure what I propose would, but I think it'd have a better chance at it. Either way, good to at least see it discussed at all. Hugs and kisses.

I think it's a great idea to remove (sub-)forum clutter. But in order to best do that, I don't think this single thread is enough; we should really spin up a new forum called "Sub-Forum Destruction Discussion" to fully allow the community to engage.

Seriously though let's not get rid of Challenges outright, I actually had some fun with them. What I would suggest, though, is to simply fold them into the idea of Contests generally (since they really were basically just user-directed, max-2-contestant (?) mini Contests, after all). We can preserve the distinction in the form of a header/prefix, perhaps (Challenge submissions/threads/results can have [Challenge] as a prefix).

@Ralle hmmmm I am not too certain about this, but maybe a pinned thread in Off-Topic to list all threads from discontinued subforums? That may make it easier for people to check something. How does that sound? Not sure if it is too much, though.

Aw, it was sweet of you to ask. I've got mixed feelings about Roleplaying. It means a lot to me due to all the good times. If it were up to me, I'd probably leave it as a sub-forum in a place of little visibility (not Off-Topic) where it could be accessed by anyone who likes to read or perhaps even wants to reanimate the roleplays.

Regarding Off-Topic, I agree with @fladdermasken (I love the avatar btw, so entertaining). In my view, threads are either serious, and then they go on Medivh's Tower, or they are for spam, and then they go on Something Else. Ideas for solutions:

1) Loosen the standard on what "spam" is concerned, and merge Something Else into Off-Topic. I've been an Off-topic Moderator in another forum, where I pushed for a policy much more lenient on thread derailing and double-posting. It didn't make sense to enforce those in Off-Topic. If things got too confusing, it would be my job to do a little clean up.

2) Make Medivh's Tower a forum in its own right.

3) Computer Tech and all other sub-forums should perhaps go in Programmer's Discussion -- renamed to Programming & Gaming?​

That was my thought. But then I have a question: now that our historical Diablo sub-forum has been merged, how can posts about any of the Diablo games stand out, especially when considering the fact there are *three* upcoming Diablo games?

What was the reasoning for the StarCraft games (I, II+Covert Ops, Ghost) to have their own space, while for the Diablo games (I, II, III, Immortal, Resurrected, IV) to not have one?

Depends on what we do to support it. Just creating a forum ain't gonna cut it. This was our problem with SC2. Diablo doesn't offer a modding environment, but its players must crave for something. If the Hive could offer a value proposition and adequately promote it, who knows.

I'd rather focus on big arm movements and I am saving those for planets that can better sustain our biology.
