[Altered Melee] Tales of Unsung Races (ToUR)

I. Introduction

Greetings champions of Azeroth, so instead of preparing for my school requirements here I am.
The "Tales of Unsung Races" or "ToUR" is an altered melee map series for custom races.
The races or factions that will be presented here are the ones that feels "uncelebrated"
or the ones left out in the lore.

While, the custom race in the maps are not lore accurate I try to make them as plausible.
Like with the Quilboar, I have added Harpies since while they are neighbors
and might have been fighting against each other.
They can be connected through Agamaggan and Aviana both are Ancients,
also making Druid of the Tusks possible.

For Bloodsail, you might have notice the 'Uncrowned' in the title.
Fleet Admiral Tethys is one of the Shadow on the WOW Lore.
So I have used this Lore, to make it like the pirates are under the rogue class hall.


II. Finished Races

posted in the Hiveworkshop's Map section.

  1. Quilboar
    Quilboar.png
    Background: wiki
    Design Philosophy:
    "Quilboar are known for their fearlessness and savagery.
    Believed to be the mortal"
    "Quilboar are primitive, resilient, fearless creatures who inhabit
    the central Barrens of Kalimdor..."

    I wanted to put emphasis on their resiliency to have survived
    their wars with other various races and a Tribal centered race.

    • Dependent on a limited options for healing and health regen (Briar Protection Upgrade)

  2. Bloodsail Buccaneers

    Background: wiki
    Design Philosophy:
    "Although extremely dangerous, they are the least wealthy of all
    pirate groups. This is due to the simple fact that no one survives
    a Bloodsail attack, which means the pirates don't allow survivors
    to be possibly robbed again in the future."

    Due to this description from the wowpedia, I have scrapped my idea
    of a pillage-based race and instead focus them into an offense type.


    Cons
    • Costlier units
    • No reliable source of healing (for now)
    • No proper base defense (will add another building for this)

    Pros
    • Strong offense capabilities
    • Strong siege capabilities
    • High mobility
    • Versatile

I know that this might sound weird but are tooltip descriptions like below bad or tolerable? Thanks! hehe

Ignoring Strike: "Swingin' their weapon, these Corsairs unleash a mighty strike that slashes their foes and be makin' 'em feel as vulnerable as a ship in a storm. It reduces the enemy's armor by 2, lettin' the rest of the crew have an easier time takin' 'em down!"

I personally prefer flavour text above or below the main description, since the main detail (tactical) and the flavor are better separated. Otherwise, it is tolerable for me, just distractive sometimes.

Seems fine to me, adds a little flavor to the race. Perhaps add colorcode to the effects of the ability tooltip to make it clearer.

1. Axis of Awful - instead of going for a full Gnoll race I went for this.

Units Trained: a trogg, a murloc, a gnoll, and a kobold

A murloc, a gnoll, a trogg, and a kobold walked into a bar. The bartender said, "I'm sorry, we don't serve your kind here."

The murloc replied, "Mrglglglgl!" (translation: "Well, that's just fin-tastic!")

The gnoll grumbled, "You've got to be kidding me. I was really looking forward to a bone-chilling drink."

The trogg scratched its head and said, "Rock and roll?"

Meanwhile, the kobold timidly asked, "Do you have any candles to spare? Kobolds need light, you know!"

The bartender sighed and said, "Alright, alright, I suppose we can make an exception, but just this once. Just please keep the chaos to a minimum!"

And so, the unlikely group settled down for an evening that was a mix of gurgles, growls, grunts, and a whole lot of "Mrglglgl!"

2. Westfall Brigade

Wheat System - third resource for the race, the intent was to emphasize Westfall being Stormwind's breadbasket once again and due to agriculture being cool.

Units

a. Patrol
Patrol.gif
- a light calvary unit which gains evasion when moving. Uses Is Unit Moving by Bribe, Knight model by Stefan.K


Heroes
a. Gryan Stoutmantle - Support/Tank Hero
[Q] Consecration - The Westfall Marshall calls upon divine energy to consecrate a target area, causing an explosion of light. Enemies caught within the explosion are knocked up and take 100 damage.

[W] Walls' Blessing - The Westfall Marshall bestows a blessing upon a friendly unit, increasing their life regeneration and preventing them to suffer lethal damage for the 10 seconds.

[E]
One's Calling - Revives one allied unit.

[R] Protection Ward - The Westfall Marshall radiates a protective aura that grants friendly units within 500 range a 22% chance to block all types of damage.



b. Houndmaster (inspiration) - Support/Summoner Hero

[Q] Summon Hound - Summons 1/2/3 hounds for 60 seconds.

[W] Dazed Shot - Stuns the target unit and makes all Hound and Core Hounds prioritize the target to attack.

[Passive]
Pack Mentality - gives bonus damage, Lifesteal or Permanent Immolation, and Critical Strike to Hounds and Core Hounds.

[R] Invoke Core Hounds - Houndmaster channels his mastery over the bond between hound and master, unsummoning up to three hounds in the vicinity and replacing them with powerful Core Hounds summoned through a meteor. The meteor impact deals 50 initial damage and briefly stuns enemies in the area for 0.5 second.



c. Hope Saldean or Vanessa VanCleef - Rogue/Support Hero
abilities are still to be conceptualize


Design

Initially, I want to portray the race with Villager-Militia themes, then it went into 'struggling yet resilient community of farmers and refugees turned defenders' as ChatGPT describes it.
The farmers would refer to the veteran militiamen and citizens of Westfall.
The refugees would refer to the other humans and high elves displaced by wars especially from Lordaeron.
With this justification, I think a high elven spellcaster unit and the Houndmaster won't be thematically alien to the race.
Aside from tweaking my two maps and the minor
works for Amani Trolls and Axis of Awful.
I have quite the progress with Westfall Brigade.
Though, the map was made with the Reforged Editor
not on my usual 1.26 (I originally thought I could just
downgrade it to be compatible with the previous patch
but I'm currently clueless), I might probably post a Test Map. Thank you!

I don't see how that could cause a crash. Is this on reforged? If not, you could post it here or pm. I could take a look and see if it crash for me too.
The problem was when the 'Run Melee AI scripts' runs, it crashes. Might be because of a 'wheat' I place near the starting locations. Prior to the crash I set wheats' pathing map to none, removed them then it didn't crash anymore.

Gonna make some test, but the problem is fix for now.

Greetings! It's been awhile that I have work with my project,
my progress was minimal actually due to (prioritizing college?)

Attach here is a Test map for the Westfall Brigade race/faction
Just Pick Human and set the Handicap to 90%

The race needs polishing especially for the Wheat Resource System,
feedbacks are very much appreciated.
