Major League Gaming (MLG) announced that they had a record number of viewers in MLG Raleigh, though that news announcement seems to have been taken down, so we can't be sure whether they meant on-stage viewers or if they meant people who watch the live stream, or the sum of both. If such is the case, perhaps the Hive has helped contribute to it with these news announcements! For those of you who enjoy e-sports, stay tunned to DreamHack TV (live broadcast), for yet another entertaining StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty tournament (DreamHack Valencia Invitational) which apparently starts today, September 17, at 14:00 CEST. It will be cast by Apollo and TotalBiscuit.DongRaeGu (Z) is, according to the votes on Blizzard's poll, the favorite for winning Valencia.Information about Valencia Invitational.
Meanwhile, MLG has launched the Global StarCraft II Invitational. Three brackets each house a group of 8 players from a single region: Europe, North America, or Korea. These players will compete in-between them and the winner of each bracket takes 2,000$ and a paid flight to MLG Providence, where the winners will compete. Check out everything about it here.On a related note, Blizzard has been posting articles about the first year of SC2 e-sports, check it out: "We <3 eSports: A Look Back at the First Year of StarCraft II Competition".

In other news:
  • Blizzard has opened a "section" of music from their games. The tracks are not up for direct, free download, but they contain a link to iTunes where you can purchase them, as well as complete albums.
  • The North American Star League (NASL) has launched their «sophomore effort» (as mentioned in the blizzard article) with NASL - Season 2. They’re granting access to their 1080p stream for free during this first week of the season.
  • The Blizzard fan art section has been updated.

P.S. -- The DreamHack Valencia matches have began!

Blizzard announced yesterday that patch 1.4 is coming for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. It includes many changes for the editor, as well as (much needed, if I may add) balance changes.Full changelog here.

Secretly, patch 1.4.11 is already in the works for some time.

Another Major League Gaming (MLG) event, MLG Rayleigh, is on from 26th to the 28th of August (this weekend!)! With 14k$ of prizes, including 5k$ for the first place, MLG promises another weekend of ultimate SC2 action! The commentator team includes frequent faces such as Husky and Day9, but Artosis and Tasteless are coming back as well!Below is a quote from the official MLG website.
The StarCraft 2 pro roster is locked, and we have our Top 20 and Pool lineup for Raleigh. And…well, to put it mildly, this is going to be interesting. MVPDongRaeGu and FnaticRain have decided to return on their own, separate from the four players invited through the League Exchange, and so have been seeded according to their Rank Points. We have STBomber, ZeNex CoCa, STTester, and none other than oGsNada confirmed as our GSL pro players. And Naniwa and Huk are in the same Pool.

The Top 20

The Pools
sc2pooltrickster.jpg

Let's take a look at what we have here. The only PvP is in Pool A, where the aforementioned battle between Naniwa and Huk will take place, with InControl as a possible spoiler. Pool B is a ZvT fest, and there is absolutely no ZvP for Idra to worry about. The race spread in Pool C is decently balanced, and LiquidTLO will have another chance to beat DRG, after losing to him in the first match of Anaheim. In Pool D, the received wisdom might be that LiquidRet will slaughter everyone (except Nada), given how he's been playing lately, but all the other players in Pool D are capable of taking him down, if they keep their heads. However it plays out, Pool Play in Raleigh is going to offer some very interesting games indeed.

I believe we will again be able to watch the live stream from TeamLiquid's website. http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/MLG_Raleigh_Red. There's a blue stream as well, I will be posting the link soon.
EDIT: You may also watch the streams in Major League Gaming's official website: Red Stream, and the Blue Stream.

Blizzard Entertainment has launched the 2011 Global Writing Contest!

You sit at your typewriter, hands frozen in fear by the sound of crumpling paper from the darkness behind you. Shadows of broken quills encroach on your sight's periphery but slither out of view when you turn toward them. Summoning your courage, you lash out at the apparitions before they fade, only to awaken in a cold sweat with pencils and pens gripped tight in your clenched fists. You know what this dream foretells: the 2011 Global Writing Contest is upon us!

The Prophecy of the Unblinking Eye portends of a time when writing contest judges, mad with ocular fortitude from judging the 2009 and 2010 Global Writing Contests, would brazenly unleash the powers of the Ocunomicon. Seeking rituals to infuse themselves with the twisted souls of fel ocularians, they look to wield powers not meant for this or any other contest. But the sacrifices of semicolon keys and left-handed quills have only just begun, their Inkwells of Despair not yet depleted—there is time yet to save this contest!

Competitors are asked to write a short story between 2,500 and 7,500 words (no out-of-boundary is allowed) set in the Warcraft, StarCraft or Diablo universes. These are to be submitted in .DOC format with a proper title (no "Untitled" or such variations are allowed). The grand and runner-up prizes include the Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo archives, which are collections of books. The Warcraft archive, for example, contains various stories written by Chris Metzen, Richard A.Knaak, Christie Golden, and Jeff Grubb. In addition, the grand prize includes a trip to Southern California for a meal with Blizzard's writing staff, a Doomhammer™ hammer by Epic Weapons, as well as the Warcraft: War of the Ancients Archive and World of Warcraft: Chronicles of War. Check out the following link below for a full FAQ:
Are you participating? What ideas do you have for it?

Diablo III Beta testing: what does it entail?

It's been 10 years since Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (2001), but in Sanctuary, the dark fantasy world of Diablo, twenty years have passed since noble heroes saved the world during the events of the last installment of the series. Now, in Diablo III, you are again summoned to rejoin the battle against the minions of the Burning Hells. As soon as you step into Sanctuary, you will be greeted by a familiar face: Deckard Cain -- he'll be filling you in with what's been happening upon your reunion in New Tristram.

FEATURES

navbits_start.gif
Each play-through is a new experience thanks to the randomized elements of Diablo III: randomized maps, monster distribution, scripted events, and loot all make for highly replayable gameplay.
navbits_start.gif
All five classes — the fearsome Barbarian, the mysterious Witch Doctor, the mystical Wizard, the dexterous Monk, and the enigmatic and deadly Demon Hunter — are available, each bringing swift justice to the enemies of Sanctuary in their own way.
navbits_start.gif
Other familiar characters have returned. Aside from Deckard Cain, the villain Leoric, the Skeleton King of Tristram Cathedral, has risen again and is spreading his horrific plagues once more. You may potentially be called upon to put a decisive end to him once and for all.

Artisans and Followers of Sanctuary will provide companionship during the beta test.

AUCTION-HOUSE

The first way of obtaining new gear is by slaying mobs, and the second way is to purchase with gold. Now Blizzard introduces a tertiary option: the "Auction-House" concept introduces a marketplace which players can use to post items they acquire for other players to buy. The catch? You can use either in-game gold or real-world money to purchase from other players.Put up things you don't need for other players who may be desperate for what you've got. If you don't use an item, you might as well put it up for auction. There is a smart search functionality that allows you to sort out the items with best effects on your character.
The auction house is a system created to keep players from using unorthodox (and sometimes unsafe) methods of procuring items, such as repeatedly advertising in Battle.net chat channels or giving credit card information). This way, Blizzard provides a riskless alternative to third-party real-money trading organizations and the danger of transaction scams and account thefts. The Auction House will be included in the Beta.

OBJECTIVES

As expected, with this Beta test, Blizzard intends to test the functionality of their hardware and patch delivering and to gather feedback on the experience of the upcoming game. The number of people invited for the beta test as well as the duration of the beta are still uncertain, but Blizzard affirms that they may invite more players if the need arises. One thing is certain: your progress in the Beta will not carry on the retail version.
