Solo Mapping Competition #3

I don't think we can use that music, I'm not entirely sure but if those are from a video game then they are copyrighted, thus we'd need the owners permission to use them.

If the creator put them up for free download then I'm pretty sure we're okay to use them :p

You're using Red Alert 2 music, don't you?

I think no actually. All the Westwood rights belong to EA now.

hmm not really.
I first thought of the game nox, bit the quality is kinda bad for our times.

and yes, I think I heard something, that EA took the rights, and that
westwood didn't just disappear.

Basicaly i am expanding the map as time continues,on the contrary to you guys i am gonna shape my story according to the map not the vice versa most of you are doing.

Therefore if i need to drop further terraining to quickly wrap things up i will just add an apropriate ending zone i feel fit and make up some nice lore behind the map.

IMO it is far better to make the map and then the story as if you go the other way around it is lame to exclude parts of the story in order to finish the map in time.

Also feeling inspirated but i might cut the map size a bit, therefore not being the epic scale i wanted it to be.(too many exams :3)

EDIT:

Those the ending of the map has to be a final ending or are we free to give a mysterious ending with a hint of a sequel?

I agree, and I do the same :)

I think you can do whatever you want with the story, since the contest is mainly
based on the puzzles/traps. The story is needed, because it increases fun factor.

Well there are several more contestants you are forgeting about:
Equal,WhereWolfThereWolf,Amigurami,Asomath(maybe),Deaod(maybe) and HINDYhat(maybe).

I am not sure about (maybe) ones since they either didn't post in a long time or they didn't post at all(a WIP).

Anyway i doubt we will be getting an extension, it is rush hour for me, thinking of things as i terrain and implementing strange stuff :3

The poor thing is that i am still @ terrain, gonna wrap it up as much as i can in the next 6 days and then just quit terraining and focus on the triggers(15 days should be enough for me to trigger out everything since i am at least 3-4 times faster when it comes to triggers than terrain) once i do all the triggering i will just be implementing the Object editor touchups.

Btw i don't think i am gonna use imported music, my map size is 3 MB already :3

If it ends up happening so that I do not finish my map to completion before the contest period ends, I will not wrap it up quickly to submit it. I really like the idea I’m running with and have no intention of cutting it off. I'll just wait and complete to satisfaction and post it in the maps section.

(Though, I wouldn't mind finishing it in time for the contest)

You gonna fix the skybox on that?

Also is that my ice cube model? :D

Uwww.. damnit. Yes.

Yes, i love it. It's squarish. Handy, and good.
Like the concrete block I'm using for Cherno..

The bad thing: when i scale them up, they become a little bit 'thorny' on the top.. kinda weird. The good thing: I don't have to show the top.. :>
Yeah, they aren't perfectly flat... sorry about that
WoW models aside of course, whats wrong with models from XGM?

A lot of the non-game exports are stolen :/

Because the rules says that you have to give credits to everyone with resources in your map.

What I mean is you can't really blame the map maker if he can't credit properly because some idiots can't make their own resources.

Not really relevant to the making of the map, or the contest. Just saying it doesn't seem fair to disqualify on that basis. :|

Well what I need to know if I need to be removing those models or not. :(

Well, actually I found that only WoW and (probably) Chuck Noris models are immports...
If you want to ask someone at XGM if its immport, you can ask Это импорт из другои игры? Most of Russians at XGM know English, but they sometimes refuse to speak english at XGM since its "Russian site and you should speak Russian". well, we say to them to speak English here so it does make a lot of sence...

Progress Report

Just a small progress report for my entry.
I've shown a pretty bunch of screenshots and wips so you wont see anymore before the final submission. Information about gameplay and other will also not be revealed before the final submission. The overall map is alomst done as i only need to finish the very last part. No information will be given about it. When thats done i will fix every single leak in my triggers and believe me; theres very many triggers. I will place extra doodads to improve the terrain too. I got the basics of the story too. I just have to make it detailed. After that, i only need to test and test over and over to find bugs. And then at last, theres always space for improvements if theres extra time.
I've made a statistic below that is showing my progress. It seems like i will complete the map in time. Anyway, i wish everyone in the contest good luck!

Terrain: 98%
Triggers: 95%
Objects: 95%
Story/Lore: 50%
Leakfix: 100%
Balance: 60%
Bugfix: 30%

News:
I've worked a little on my map and i've now reached a better status than before. I've increased the terrain from 95 to 98. I've increased the triggers from 90 to 95. I've increased the leakfix from 10 to 100. And i've increased bugfix from 25 to 30.

That totally throws my status report into shadows:
  • terrain - 70%
  • code - 10%
  • objects - 0%
  • leakfix - 100%(i automatically clean leaks myself, so always leak free)
  • Story/lore - 0%(75% in thought though)
  • balance - 0%

I think i am gonna finish terrain by 1st februar and unfourtunatelly my map size is 256x256 but only about 1/3 - 1/2 will actually be filled with something due to i made 1 term strict: terraining ends on 1st februar no matter where it stops, i can't let my map be terrain only :(

So yeah i will need luck, loads of it to complete in time.

so we are already in the 'show-progress'-phase?
well here is mine (I started a new map, because I wasn't happy about my old one.
I think I might finish it, but I have to do a lot of things.)

• terrain: 20%
• triggers: 25%
• efficiency: 100%
• objects: 30%
• story: 50%
• balance: 0%

well, the terrain shouldn't be the problem. I can work fast with good results.

the triggers, could be hard, because they are the main work, to trigger all those
traps/riddle/puzzle stuff, and the special things.

I fix leaks whenever I finish my trigger. so this shouldn't be the problem.

Object editor work is easy, so no problem here.

Story is almost finished, I only have to implement it into the map, and that doesn't
take much time

I add balance (if it's needed) at the end, when all units are finished.
