To play as the Ogres select Orcs with 90% Handicap

Since the end of the Second War, the Ogres have been constantly mistreated by the other races. Under the short-sighted leadership of Thrall the Ogres were removed from the Horde. Although he would later (reluctantly) re-enlist the Stonemaul clan, the majority of Ogres in Azeroth have resorted to forming small clans and mercenary bands. A Human expedition in Northrend hired one of these bands, which vanished shortly afterwards. Treachery is suspected. The great warlord Mug'thol, through evil magic no doubt, was turned into a slave by the undead.

Such outrages and humiliations cannot stand! Under the visionary leadership of Mug'thol, son of Mug'thol (no relation to the previously mentioned Mug'thol) the clans have been united to form the mighty Ogre Legion. Trading loincloths for armour and wooden clubs for heavier wooden clubs this new legion has begun to arm themselves for their inevitable retribution against the pygmy races of Azeroth. Now, all will tremble upon hearing the terrifying battle cry, "ME SMASH YOU!"

The Ogres of Azeroth are a powerful race that emphasises their mighty melee attacks and natural talent for spellcraft. They lack proper architecture and range, but such a trade-off is well worth it.

  • Gronn
The Upon completion of the Lair building, a Gronn will instantly be trained for free at its location! These giants are slow but very hard to kill. In addition to their high attack damage, they can send enemy units flying through the air, temporarily disabling them and disrupting their formation. As a bonus, every time the Lair is upgraded the Gronn becomes faster and even harder to kill! Be warned though, if this colossus falls it will give a lot of experience and replacing it will cost you resources.
  • Lair
The food production building for the Ogres. Not only does building one give you a free Gronn (whoo!) but it can be upgraded to provide even more food at a relatively cheap cost (woah!). Following the old Ogre wisdom of "putting all the eggs in one basket" there can only be 1 Lair at a time, but this also means you save a lot of space in your base and don't have to worry about using workers to build more of them. The drawback of this is that if the Lair should be destroyed then you will lose most of your food so make sure it is protected.
  • Fatten
Most Ogre units have the ability to enlarge themselves at the cost of increasing their food cost. This will increase their maximum health and size. Keep in mind that this change is permanent and if used liberally you may find yourself with a very cost-inefficient army. On the other hand if you have a unit that is surrounded, you may be able to have it escape by using Fatten.

Twisted Meadows (Ogres) (Map)

A small request to make it easier for people who are searching around to find this in the future - would you be able to retitle this to something more explicit indicating that it's a custom race for the 20th tech tree contest? 🙏 I know I would definitely never search for Twisted Meadows if I'm looking for custom races, and I wouldn't be inclined to click on it in the results even if it came up 😬

  • Bull Rush on Kodos is nowhere to be found
  • I wouldn't mind some small-ish attack damage for Kodos
  • Giant's Swing has wrong tooltip
  • Drummer has wrong description and all abilities and upgrades were bugged on him. Aura was only working while not channeling, confusion was not working, manual cast did nothing except AoE attack. Also his auto-attack stopped doing any damage later on
  • Too many Ogre soundsets. I would be more creative. Also Firestarter is a female
  • Winged Eye of Killrog's rally point summon didn't work
  • That Cannon Lugger skin looked really strange. I respect that you want to make all Ogres different from one another, but he doesn't look like an Ogre with that skin at all. Also Flag Sprity felt really underwhelming and I feel like he should be able to reload his missiles even while fighting (maybe with slower cooldown?)
  • Stormclub could have been used even before upgrade
  • Thunder Magi's flying auto-attack feels strange and buggy. Also model selectbox is huge. Like 400 AOE around unit
  • I couldn't use Fatten on anyone else except workers. Also, shouldn't Beast Rider (Clefthoof Rider maybe?) and Thunder Magi have Fatten also?
  • Icons for units could use some love. Especially today with AI it is easier to come by decent icons
  • There are also various tool tip mistakes
  • Not 100% sure but I think Mighty Beasts upgrade was only giving Kodos 200 extra hit points
  • What is Dwarven Connection?
  • Enchant Hammer was bugged. It worked for the full duration, even though I have attack more than 2/3/4 times with my hero

Overall. I like them. I remember reading about your thought process for them on the contest thread, and being very excited to play them. As a lore junkie, not a fan of combining different eras of Ogres into one race, but still, they play the way I would expect them to play.
Lair as the only food building is really cool and creative. Fits them perfectly. Tauren names for heroes were a little bit iffy if you ask me.

My favourite hero was Big Hammer.

Definitely an interesting faction, though I got owned in 1v1 on first round and decided OGRE SMASH YOU! early on in my rematch :P

  1. First skill of Ogre Warlord seems to glitch, it costs zero mana as long as you have enough for activation requirement (90 mana minimum)
  2. Early game is a bit iffy due to tight food cap and lumber pricing, building altar + food building + barrack building costs too much and with workers taking 2 supplies, it makes early game quite tight with build orders to catch up with normal factions build orders
  3. Not sure if the Firestarter third skill actually heals? Maybe a buff indicator can help?
  4. Fatten only works for worker (as Mogulkhan stated)
  5. Drummer obviously uses wrong tooltip. I was a bit confused at first reading it and then I realize it sounds like Kodo Beast tooltip...
I'll be releasing videos of my 4 plays of this faction soon :)

Me smash you! No, me!

Ogres. What kind of stuff can you tell about ogres? They are huge, powerful, not quite agile, but not quite dumb.
I like that their race looks kinda "elite melee race" - workers mine and harvest more than others, so you can put less on goldmine and lumber. That you can have basically an imbalanced protector/attacker in the early game (and beyond)

My army traveled through the elves like a knife through butter. Ogres are good. But it may not be a perfect race, since I feel that they will eventually fall into lengthy macro-gameplay.

Like this race. I felt relaxed to play it. And that music is so cursed...
Like!

Glad to hear people like the race despite the bugs
:ogre_haosis:

Definitely gonna touch up these guys and try to fix everything once I get a computer that can run reforged. Things like Pack Kodos not having Bull Rush or units not being able to use Fatten makes a significant change in the usefulness of these units a lot. And the Ogre Warlord's nuke ability having no mana cost is a pretty big deal too^^;

  • I wouldn't mind some small-ish attack damage for Kodos
The Kodos were meant to be more about following the army around, with the potential to use them to body block and mess around with your opponents and creep AI. Not quite a real unit, but one that can have an impact in fights. If it has an attack then the acquisition range would make it a problem to control it's positioning: If it has a ranged attack it will be more frustrating to put it in a position to body block or Bull Rush. If it has a melee attack it will keep trying to put itself in danger when you may want to keep it in the back to use Vitality Stones or scrolls.

  • I couldn't use Fatten on anyone else except workers. Also, shouldn't Beast Rider (Clefthoof Rider maybe?) and Thunder Magi have Fatten also?
Tier 3 units weren't supposed to get Fatten for gameplay reasons. The ability is meant to increase value and keep early tier units relevant for longer to compensate for their expensive costs. Instead the tier 3 units get a research that fills a very similar function to Fatten so that, thematically, the race seems coherent. But then again, giga-sized Thunder Magi with 150% health would be fun so it's gonna happen.

Early game is a bit iffy due to tight food cap and lumber pricing, building altar + food building + barrack building costs too much and with workers taking 2 supplies, it makes early game quite tight with build orders to catch up with normal factions build orders
Yeah, their early game deviates quite a bit from altar + farm + barracks. This is one of the reasons I really wanted to keep the Gronn so that players can still creep and defend without getting an early barracks. There are some good openings you can do with this race, I'll try to throw in some videos of them later on when possible.

And that music is so cursed...
