WCChaos Translation Project

In 2002, Defence of the Ancients was released for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos by Eul.
In 2003, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne released - and though abandoned by its author, many continuations of DotA spawned.
In the west, one prevailed - DotA Allstars.
In Korea, however... There was Chaos. WarCraft Chaos.
Nobody in the west noticed it. No translation was ever made. I took that job for myself.

Originally DotA Chaos, it spawned from an open-source TFT port of DotA by GEO as a modification by Cho-Go-Su, meant to make the game much faster, add more interesting heroes, and fix original RoC DotA's problems (e.g. low inter-lane mobility) with new mechanics such as the ability to break trees with basic attacks and stash unit, which can freely move throughout the map.
However, very soon it became evident, that RoC DotA's heavily-asymmetrical layout is the fundamental problem of this map - and so a new map was created, from where the "DotA" prefix was dropped and this map became just Chaos.
From then on - Chaos became the undisputed king of AoS-maps in Korea, overshadowing even DotA Allstars, and having its own televised esports scene. Only League of Legends was able to take it off its throne, but Chaos still has a massive following in Korea - probably as massive as DotA Allstars in the whole world right now - and it even got its own "Dota 2" by the name of Chaos Online, or Chaos Heroes Online in some regions. And though I personally love the latter even more than the original Chaos for how ahead of its time it was, it had mixed reception in Korea and it failed to reach the global audience.

So what is so interesting about this map?
The Stash - an ultimate courier. Each player, in addition to their hero, has an invulnerable unit, which has 6 inventory slots, and can blink onto any point of the map. This means that you can buy any item anywhere - from new artifacts to consumeables - but that would require sufficient micro skill if you want to do it efficiently.
Repel/Dispel - a set of two potions, with which heroes start by default. They are the bread and butter of combat in Chaos: Repel allows you to protect yourself from most magic for 15 seconds, while Dispel - remove most positive buffs from an enemy (including Repel) or negative buffs from an ally. This means that - unlike Allstars, where spell immunity is granted only by an artifact, which you sometimes are forced to purchase - in Chaos EVERYONE has access to spell immunity. However, it must be used wisely - to dodge certain skills and not just upon entering a fight - as in the opposite case it will be quickly removed from you and your hero will be killed...
• ...unless you use the Teleport ability: it is built into every hero in Chaos, and it allows not only to teleport onto allied base, but also do so while gaining full invulnerability. However, while it is a get-out-of-jail-for-free card, its cooldown is 5 minutes.
Creep waves are small: only 2 melee and 1 ranged. This makes long laning phase not a thing in Chaos - there is much more sense in teamfighting after heroes gain their ultimates, and even before that ganks are commonplace - and this also forces TWO heroes on each team into the jungle, so that experience could be distributed more efficiently.
Trees can be broken with basic attacks - and the map is designed around it, which is specifically the reason why junglers spend most of their time ganking laners.
• The towers, which you push, are much more interesting than in DotA Allstars or other games of this genre. There are two first towers, and each of them has insane regeneration: the only ways to destroy them is to either do it as a team, or - if your hero has an ultimate which deals damage to structures - to use it up on it. The second tower, in addition to regeneration, has magical damage splash on its attacks - and though it can be countered with Repel, these towers are so tanky, that they might OUTLAST repel's duration EVEN IF nobody comes to its rescue! And while the base-gating towers are nothing to write home about, there is an invulnerable and spell-immune dragon, which guards the place, and its invulnerability is only disabled after the team loses ALL THREE of its tier-2 towers. Good luck pushing all of that!!
• Chaos has a time limit of 50 minutes, upon which victory is decided by how much structures each team pushed minus penalty points (designed to discourage stalling tactics).
There are many more interesting peculiarities, as well as unique items and heroes, but this is the gist of WCChaos.

So what did I do to it? Nothing more than translated the whole thing - though not by myself, as I don't know Korean, but using machine translation. It is not perfect, but it is now completely playable in English without using any Korean wikis. Some text was left untranslated, as it's quite hard to get to some places where text is located in map's archive, but the most important parts such as ability and item descriptions, as well as notifications, are readable.

Bear in mind that this is NOT a deprotection of this map: you WON'T be able to launch this map in the World Editor, and this was NEVER my intention. Only its text was edited, not the code itself.

Unfortunately, Chaos does not have bots: if you wanted to play a real full match of Chaos, you would need to assemble a party of 10 players. However, you can at least launch it and get a feel of some heroes in this map - so it's safe to say that this map is now much more well preserved for non-Korean audience than before.

There are four important notes before you launch this map:
1. It DOES NOT work in Reforged - only versions 1.26-1.28.5 as far as I can tell.
2. Its size EXCEEDS map size limit not only in 1.26, but also in 1.27 (which is 128 mb) - so you would need a map size limit remover, such as this one.
3. The first slot in each team is a spectator - it's recommended that you choose the second slot in the first team, as...
4. ...by default, its game mode only allows for random pick. In order to be able to pick ALL of the heroes in the game, you must pick the second option in game mode selection menu, which allows to pick your faction's heroes; then write -ap in the chat (All Pick, self explanatory); after which write -hd (this reveals hidden characters, which are only accessible by default when randomming a hero).

Current translated version of the map is A1.A6, up to date with the current official version. I plan on updating this translation each time a new version comes out.

I also made a similar translation of a much older version of this map, released back when it was called DotA Chaos and used RoC DotA's map - you can check it out here on EpicWar.

And there is also heavy usage of models, imported from League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, and Dota 2 - which is the primary reason why the file size of this map is so massive.

ADDITIONAL NECESSARY INFORMATION
  • A credits list in the map thread description is required where the names of the resource (models, skins, icons, spells, sound etc.) authors are mentioned along with the specific resource. It would be a luxury to have links leading to the used resources. Credits in the Quest Log would be appreciated too.
  • A detailed changelog in the first post would be helpful to reviewers and notify fans about the newest implementations to your map.
  • Map thread tags are important. Please use those that fit and not more or none.

Well, here's the thing. To contact creators (or rather current maintainers) of this map I would need to at least create an account on their website. And - to keep the story short - Korean websites, especially those connected to gaming, all require having Korean Serial Security Number (essentially, Korean passport) to register, which I do not have. So there is no way for me to contact the mapmakers and ask for permission.

Nonetheless, I would argue that having this map in English is valuable for game preservation purposes - even despite me not being able to get the permission.

As for the resources I used... Well... Does MPQ Editor count? Or, if I must also mention resources the developers used, all I can do is list whatever shows on the scanner. Would that suffice?

No, it would be nice to try going the extra mile and credit other stuff not from the site as much as possible.
As for the preservation purposes, I don't know. Can you guarantee this isn't a hacked version or cheats have been injected?
Also, we could keep it until the actual authors would come and ask for it to be taken down. However, since you kind of know how to get into contact with them, perhaps trying somehow whether by leaving a message on some platform like YT or other where they're also active or where someone who could contact them from there could be found, would definitely mean a lot.
I don't think it's mighty OK to simply take anything out there for "preservation" purposes (since they probably are doing that in their own community/language) especially when the author(s) is/are active. By the same logic we could simply take anyone's map (including English ones) which is not on HIVE and put it here for such a reason which isn't fair IMO (how can you tell a mapper doesn't want their map on a specific site).

I can for sure guarantee this map isn't hacked, as I got it right from their official site: https://wcchaos4.com/map/839511

I also think I figured out a way to contact with them - which is through email. I'll inform when they give their answer.

As for the credits - I'll try my best soon.

Hero selection doesn't seem to work. Tried on 1.30.4. I see it doesn't work on patches below 1.29. If we can't test it, it can't be approved. We can't be bothered to install all game versions for every map.

Awaiting Update.
It is, in fact, the opposite - it works only on versions below 1.29, which I have mentioned - you might have misread. They play it on 1.28.5 as far as I'm aware, and I tested it on 1.27b with a .mix, which removes map size limit - it works there as well.

That's what I meant but now I see I've written it badly.

Oh, and, I've recalled one more weird peculiarity of this map.
First slots of each teams are spectators.
I have no idea why it was done like this, but when picking first slots you can't do pretty much anything other than watch.
