Anub'arak Takes Over the Undead Campaign
(Path of the Traitor King)

Campaign Info

A parody of Warcraft 3's second campaign: Path of the Damned, where you play the campaign as Anub'arak. It is a sequel to "Garithos takes over the Human Campaign" and has AI voices, custom units, items and cutscenes. It's mainly focussed in altering the story of the undead campaign so I don't have much to offer regarding gameplay.

Undead Scourge Banner

Lord Garithos succeeded in halting the Lich King’s plague of undeath, preventing it from consuming the capital. Yet the victory came at a terrible cost. Much of Lordaeron’s strength was spent in the struggle.

Weakened and divided, the remnants of Lordaeron now struggle to hold their borders from other threats. As the undead lurk within the shadows of the land, their greatest champion, Anub'arak, arrives and rallies what is left of the Scourge within Lordaeron and lead them to their destiny that has been written so long ago.

What's Next?
This time for real, after Anub'arak campaign there won't be any takeover projects. With the exception of Legacy of the Traitor King which nearly half of it will include custom missions. But before that I'll make an another Garithos campaign which includes him defending Lordaeron from the Legion's onslaught and uniting human kingdoms under the Alliance.

Truly one of the most creative reimaginings. This is a sequel to the "Garithos takes over the Human Campaign" campaign.

But the experience gained since shines through here, showcasing that Nral and his crew know what they're doing.

Even if it is based on the Undead campaign, it feels new and fresh both in terms of what units are present, locales, gameplay and writing.

Absolutely looking forward to what's coming next!

Why after i attached the file to campaigns on my warcraft, it doest show when i try to find the campaign on custom campaign option?
You must have the current version of the game (2.0.4). Even the Garithos campaign was also updated recently. Some campaigns and maps are only playable with the current version you got from Battle.net app.

Another possible reason is that you didn't place the campaign file in a correct path. It should goes to "Documents\Warcraft III\Campaigns" folder.

ADDITIONAL NECESSARY INFORMATION
  • A credits list in the map thread description is required where the names of the resource (models, skins, icons, spells, sound etc.) authors are mentioned along with the specific resource. It would be a luxury to have links leading to the used resources. Credits in the Quest Log would be appreciated too.
  • A detailed changelog in the first post would be helpful to reviewers and notify fans about the newest implementations to your map.
  • Map thread tags are important. Please use those that fit and not more or none.

An ordinary campaign , with boring gameplay.
I think most people will play it for jokes anyway.

And since I already post a comment, I wanna write about chapter 1.

I feel like this could be altered a bit. I mean, the sudden summoning doesn't really make sense. I mean, the Lich King could give the order to assemble the acolytes himself. Or at least warn about dreadlord's plans. And his sudden idea to fight Tichondrius doesn't really makes sense since he should know better than attacking basically a Lich King's bosses' representative.

You are literally questioning the original plot of the game, not mine. In Warcraft 3, Arthas claimed Frostmourne and returned to Lordaeron, then summoned by Tichondrius. The same event happens here. And I can't see any reason why it can't happen here as well.

Anub'arak's rush forward Tichondrius was put there as a joke, should not be taken seriously. I wanted to keep the same vibe with the original without changing it much. You don't need to take everything seriously here, even though the story is written in a serious sense, it is still a parody.

An extremely good campaign that would be perfect if Anub’arak were replaced by Arthas. I really enjoyed all the additions, including the events and the Frostmourne levels. The difficulty is spot on, and the new Nerubian and Elven tech trees were my favorites. For me, it’s an excellent touch on already great gameplay, with meaningful additions and a compelling story. Even though it’s a parody, it manages to create its own universe that connects well with the previous Garithos campaign.

Great job!

Finally, gonna leave the 5 star right now. I know I'm gonna like it already. The Garithos campaign was very fun.

what is with Gharbad in chapter 2? Was it suppose to trigger something?

fr you're calling a pretty much Blizzard campaign boring. IDK what to say here.
If you play too many Blizzard campaigns, you will gradually become bored with most of them. For me, an interesting campaign should have more new content, new terrain, and new factions. You can try Sevenblood's campaign.

I already added bunch of custom units and upgrades on both undead and enemy sides. If you quited about 2 missions you probably didn't see them.

As for the concept of this campaign, it's a parody version of the original. It should not be reviewed like a new campaign anyway. You gotta review the parody and the content that I added not the ones I haven't change. Your personal preferences like "not enough custom stuff" doesn't make a criticism if you ask me. Even my new campaigns which will have different terrains won't have everything custom because I like original game better. I played a lot of custom campaigns, including that one you posted. I don't really enjoy the custom units and abilities people added as much I enjoy the original.

So, what's next? I'm waiting for the guy who doesn't like bugs and will leave 1 star. It should be here soon.

Well, the guy who usually drops a 1-star rating isn't here yet so here I am with a 5.
What you've created might have started as a joke but the whole Takeover concept is interesting and you deserve credit for initiating something fresh.
The fact that you're putting a new spin on a campaign people have already played countless times is commendable on its own.
The AI work, the voice lines, the gameplay additions-none of that is easy to pull off.
The Anub'Arak and Garithos campaigns are great additions to the Hive library.
They offer an alternative universe take on Warcraft III and at times they even remind me of The Adventures of Rowan the Wise by Turnro, one of my all time favorites.
They're not the same thing but they play in that same creative space and that's worth acknowledging.
For anyone who wants to revisit the original Warcraft III campaigns through a fourth wall breaking lens with fun references, extra gameplay layers, and a parody style twist, these campaigns are surprisingly high quality.

Well done.

Thank you, FallenStar. Nice to see you here :infl_thumbs_up:

Hello, i've been playing the campaign non-stop (currently at dalaran siege) and i'm really enjoying some parts of the campaign, there's other part that i found annoying (defend the statues in Silvermoon) but so far really liking it

May i say the only bug or weird stuff i have found, is once you get the Tomb ancients, when they burrow they lose 1 food (counting as 5 food) but when you unburrow them, you get back the food

But so far i'm enjoying more having a more useful and curious hero rather than arthas, and the deathknights are cool

Edit: i found somehow that Antonidas dissapears after loading and i can't progress any further in the mission (also archmagi counter goes to 3)

Strange, I could still see him. He disappeared after some time or at the start of the mission? Also did you skip in the middle of the cinematic so that may help me to determine the source of the error.

From what i noticed is when i loaded a save, i had killed 2 of them, and since i'm playing on hard mode i tend to load a lot. Not sure what triggers it.

Load might have broken some on the models in the game, including Antonidas. Missing model breaks the unit as well. I honestly don't know what might causing it, but I suspect it's a Reforged bug which I am unable to fix.

Finally finished the campaign and it was fun!

I liked all the references to Diablo 2, the game was one of my childhood favorites

Just a visual thing on the side quest of chapter 3, after I completed the mission, it doesn't appear complete in the quest menu, I hope that makes sense xd

Chapter 5 - after a few minutes, all gold mines, mercenary camp, all circle of power has health bars and you can destoy it

Elder Nadox or Khir whatever his name was - they have the same model?

As I say in the YouTube comments, I would have liked all the skills to be QWER

Overall a very nice campaign and cant wait to play the next project!

Not sure if this a reforged issue or something else. For some reason if I go to skip the intro cutscene of a mission I get the "Disconnect" pop up have to click it then reload the map. I only noticed it on chapter 5/6 mainly cause those are only two levels I restarted. Have not tested it on other maps.

Also noticed if you transfer the arm of king leroic between KT and Nadox the skeleton army spell cooldown will reset.

I doubt if there is anything I can do about it. But perhaps I can make it (Nadox Only) since Kel'Thuzad is removed in Chapter 8.

This is a very fun and great campaign , i notice in chaptwr two the main hall cant upgrate to halls of the dead and i cant get more meat wagons

I am not really sure if you could build meat wagon in the original. Does anyone here remember how it was?

Not a huge deal honestly as you only have it for the one level with them two.

I believe you only had access to Ghouls and meat wagons during chapter 2.

They are in chapter two how can you beat those paladins without meat wagons

Overall it's a good campaign, but there's just one thing that bothered me a little(maybe more than "a little"...): the difficulty, i tried to play in hard mode, managed to beat the first 3 chapters, then the game became impossible, i'm not a very good player, but many times i felt... powerless, on mission 6 at first it seemed easy, i destroyed 2 orc bases with ease, but then they became way more powerful, especially the red base, sending very heavy attacks and i couldn't defend myself without having my entire army in my base. Same thing on the Dalaran siege, first base (and second archmage) easy, then the attacks became violent, sometimes sending 3 heroes 8-8-10 with a legion of units... barely survived. I had to switch to normal difficulty, but normal is too easy, i could play blindfolded. From the comments i see no one complained about the difficulty so i think i'm just too bad from playing hard but "normal" felt too easy, boring.
Beside this, i appreciate all the new stuff, new units, new spells, some new items, these are the things i love. I've written a small list of things that can be improved, even tho they are details.
Mission 1
1) The acolyte that speaks about the graveyard, its portrait is a villager, but it should be an acolyte (?)

Mission 2
1) I can't build the slaughterhouse since it needs Halls of the Dead, and it's not avaiable.
2) Unholy strenght and armor has not included the Crypt guard in their description (after playing all the campaign, i can say the description jsut remains the same).
3) You can destroy the Urn.
4) Thicondrius has a "!" on his head during the final cutscene.
5) Maybe the Crypt Guards need a larger hitbox.

Mission 3
1) I can fail the secondary quest even if i finished it, if the plague spreader dies.
2) There's a barrack inside trees at the Blue base.
3) The attack animation of the Avenger deals damage with a slight delay.

Mission 4
1) The archers don't attack in the initial cutscene.
2) I found out that the Crypt and the Graveyard models remain when they get destroyed.
3) Soulstorm also heales Naxxramas, the description doesn't mention it.

Mission 5:
1) The warning when a statue dies has a "|n" .
2) There's a place where a statue must be placed that's too close to Silvermoon, often the troops defending that statue go into the shield and
get teleported to the center of the map, it's annoying.
3) The troll and undead army unleashed is almost useless, everyone gets stuck at the entrance of Silvermoon, making "Pillar of Flames" and "Rain of ice" (don't remember the name) OP.
4) The cutscene after the shield goes down is unskippable.
5) Some trolls after attacking for a while went back where they spawned.

Mission 6:
1) The icon of the Death knight has the Hero glow.
2) Enemy heroes gain levels.

Mission 7
1) The deathlord training icon has the wrong coordinates.

Mission 8
1) The infernals when summoned stay completly idle, with no animation until you move them.
2) In the final cutscene, many human units don't run away.
3) The final cutscene is unskippable (there are also other unskippable cutscene in the campaign)

Thanks for giving such detailed review and pointing out the errors. While I see most of them are fixable, some of them are not.

From what you have seen in Hard difficulty, it's rather pushing you to control most of the map before those crazy attack waves can begin. It's a race against time. Perhaps attack wave timers in normal diff could be decreased, close to hard. But it's whole a lot of work. I'll see when I'll get into that.

This is a pretty ambitious custom project and you can see there is passion behind it but overall it ends up somewhere in the middle. The idea and atmosphere are nice and sometimes the campaign catches that nerubian feeling but a lot of the missions feel slow or kind of repetitive since it's basically the same campaign again from war3. Some maps don't feel very polished and the balance is off in places making a few fights either too easy or just annoying to get through. The story has potential but it doesn't really go deep into Anub'Arak or the world around him so it feels a bit less and generic compared to the Garithos one which had better funny moments imo.
There' also a bit too much AI for my taste from the jokes to not just the voice acting which is fine, depends on the ppl that like it or not.
It's not a bad try since there are moments that are fun or creative but in the end it feels like it needed more work to really shine. It's an okay playthrough if you like the undead theme but not something you absolutely have to play.

An ordinary campaign , with boring gameplay.
I'm reinstalling War3 just so I can play this campaign. So your opinion not only agitates me, but also angers me. You are entitled to it, in a democracy, after all.

To author:

Bthw, will write a review once I'm done. Thanks for your contribution, I really enjoy your campaigns. It's sad there won't be other take-over campaigns, but if your future work is in similar style and proportion to Garithos Campaign, I bet they'll be amazing.
Director's Cut 6/5. Just because I am also entitled to my opinion.

Review

Overall, a decent campaign. I couldn't find the secret items (uniques) even though I played thorough. Perhaps missed details. I played on hard difficulty, and I found chapter 7 too hard to beat, so I got discouraged to continue on having fun. Perhaps that's a skill issue, but alas, I believe there's room to improving it or making it easier.
I find your campaign with Garithos much better or better polished, but that is not to say this one is lacking, garithos is simply funnier.

Chapter 1: Trudging through the ruins
Standard from the original campaign, good changes overall, nice secret optional quest.

Chapter 2: Digging up the dead
Same as chapter one, with additional changes. I was expecting something new from the two secret areas that were in the original map, but alas, it's good. In this map I resurrected Morgrain, thought that perhaps he will be playable in the future chapters, but doesn't change much that he actually isn't.

Chapter 3: Into the realm eternal
Good changes, nice demi-heroes. Overall, a decent map (one of my favorites from the original), with good overall additions.

Chapter 4: Key of the three moons
Firstly, I found it impossible to beat. Especially with the hard attacking waves. But then I simply avoided the 'main' goldmine, and took a zeppelin with all my forces and moved to the right base. If done quickly enough, there is a chance to base there and slowly build an army until strong enough to defeat the attacking opponents through the portals. Strategy here was mass necromancers and siege.

Chapter 5: The fall of Silvermoon
One of my favorites from the original, and also good new additions. I really enjoyed this map and the fact that Sylvanas finally gets treated as she deserves. Anub'arak is no simp. In the original (old patches) there was a broken way to possess one of the elven workers from Sylvanas and build an elven army. I wish there was a method/easter egg to that, but no big deal, nevertheless.

Chapter 6: Blackrock and roll, too!
Good map overall, decent playthrough.

Chapter 7: The siege of Dalaran
Now this map, started hard, is decent. Good secret with the sheep. But it's the map that discouraged me. It's simply too hard. (Maybe a skill issue). I found it especially impossible to beat the blue base. I was having fun up until that point. Even at 100/100 food, with Vizier's mass anti-magic shells on my army, it's really difficult to beat that base. Perhaps the strategy is to simply bypass beating the bases and focus on the Archimages, but where's the fun in that?
I really tried my best of all possible strategies and failed. At the end I relied on 'whosyourdaddy' to beat it, which really is ashame. The enemy kept defeating my army at the blue base no matter what I tried, even at 10k gold and wood, and replenishing my army constantly.

Chapter 8: Under the Burning Sky
Not my favorite map, so I rushed through with 'whosyourdaddy'.

Chapter 9: Eve of Chaos
Good boss battle, but I kept losing to Archimonde four times, so I just used 'whosyourdaddy' again.

Chapter 7 requires tactics and knowledge on enemy AI. Most important fact to know, is that after the second archmage is destroyed, the final base starts to send attack waves. Get your all upgrades before you can kill him. Then, you have to destroy blue before they can start attacking with all three heroes at once. Once you gain your foothold on blue's base, you have push back one of the attack waves with minimum loses, and strike at Antonidas before the next wave can begin. Tomb Ancients play a crucial role in defense, and you also need obsidian destroyers to devour magic on them because the sorceress' target them with polymorphs for the most of the time. Another important thing to know is that this mission is where you get to craft all unique items. That's why it's hard. And hard difficulty is meant to require all unique items to beat.

Garithos was simply funnier because there was so much room for jokes, since it had multiple micro missions which allowed this. The original undead campaign has very little moments for cutscenes and even in the Fall of Silvermoon I struggled to make extra cutscenes. The reason why Garithos was much polished is that I never changed the AI script in there. In Anub'arak, I basically adjusted the Hard difficulty for my own playstyle. I use nearly all sorts of units to benefit their ability while many other players only relly on certain units which is the sole reason why they can't keep up with this difficulty. Some people don't even use Naxxramas. I never tested Normal and Easy simply because I had no time, and got bored for obvious reasons. (I tested each map on Hard for like at least 10 times). So yeah, I hope this explains it.

This is how I beat the mission.
