I know thats exactly why i want to be one. If it's both hard and serious than it will be something worthwhile to do or it wouldn't ever be done to begin with. I personally want to do something worthwhile with my time be it hard or easy. Plus i figure I spend so much time on the hive anyway being bored, i might as well just do something useful with that time. and by the way HT i think they were just telling me I'm stupid. (unless i misunderstood)

I can tell by your post that you lack any prior experience as a moderator. A truely sane person wouldn't touch moderating with a 10 foot pole. But then there's people like myself, who enjoy moderating. I know how time consuming it is, the way people treat you, having to deal with immature members. I know all of this, but I can't figure out why I enjoy it. I guess I'm just not normal.

And I gurantee you, if you were to become a THW moderator at this point in time, with no past experience, you would fail.

Ehh - have you ever been moderator in a forum? If you were, you wouldn't think like this.
If you're bored on the hive, close your firefox/ie/opera/chrome and see what real life brings you.
Moderators are chosen for reasons which are valid for the existing staff members to add this user to them.

No one want to be a mod anymore because it is to much work. People screw up in the forums, and expect the mods to clean it up. Not to mention the little QQ ass babies that run to the mods with every one of their problems. It is complete chaos, esp if the mod could give two shits and a fuck about their job.

Hmm... I remember people fight for moderator positions before, now they leave their positions, and almost none wants to be moderator. Strange ...
I don't recall much fighting for mod positions by any party, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The workload is not by any means the main reason to not be a mod.

I wanna be a mod! I wanan be a mod! I WANNA BE A MODDDDD!!! (Nah just kidding.)

The workload is not by any means the main reason to not be a mod.

Well it's a big part of the problem, it's also the main problem that hiveworkshop has, the problem we are trying to fix.
Combine the workload with the lack of time that people have with the social life most people have, let's not forget that the job is just rather annoying because of the high abount of peopel that go abuse the hive.

Being a mod isn't all that appealing. The only + side is that u get power, but what kind of power? Power on a forum, well to be honest... It's not realy one of the things thats hgh on my to do list you know.
I'd rather have power in the world beyond internet.

That's basicly the problem, it's not appealing.

No offence, but you don't have to lecture me on what it's like to be a mod (or what's going on in the community); I was just the development director until I resigned a week ago.

And deathcom is right (I think he said it in this thread) that moderating is fun for some people (I'm one of them), to a point.

My bad should have said it differently.
I wasn't lecturing you, I was giving my opinion on the whole mod thing. :p
I know you were the development director. (To bad you stoped.)

And yeh sure, some people might like to be a moderator, but not me.
It depends on the person realy, it'll be hard to find somebody good enough for the job that's actualy willing to do it.

Would it not be best to go back to the wc3sear.ch way of handeling things?

I'm one of those people that enjoy moderating. I have not yet figured out why I enjoy it so much. I just, like it!

There wasn't anything wrong with wc3sear.ch, all the crap was eventually filtered out, and people can tell the difference between a good map and a bad map, it's called logic. The only problem with Wc3sear.ch was its lack of disk space, and it was always over its bandwidth.

I have to agree. I wasn't an active mapper at the time of wc3sear.ch, but it seemed like a nice place.

Wc3Campaigns has the advantage, that it has strict submission and approval prinicpals, and everyone knows it. This means no "n4rut0 sp311 p4x", or "anime arenas", that have been randomly submitted, and approved simply because there is nothing that is basically wrong with them, except that they are B--A--D.

I still think the Hive should have stricter submission rules, as you can see.

As to mods: M34k m3 m00d plz? KKth4x.

As to the mod thing. You'd be giddy about having those nice powers and getting that little symbol, but chances are, your smile would quickly drop once you had to get to work..

I've been an admin of Four forums (Promoted from mod at Proboards and Invisionfree stuff that eventually got deleted due to inactivity, so they don't count for squat if you ask me.) and trust me, it can be hellish at times. It really can. So don't think it's all fun and games people.

But on those other sites we had bots rampant posting porn, so I don't know if it'd be easier here or not. I'd assume no, as the ones I was admin at you just had to keep the users in line, nothing else.

I'd argue that a good chunk of the staff does not do their job particularly because there is a lot of work to do. Gilles in one of these topics even said he'd do the map moderation job if there were less work. People like you and I, Poot, are not common.

What's the point in becoming a less effective wc3c? Besides, you need a site for the masses.
Just because a site has a strict policy for submissions in no way makes it any less of a site for the masses.

Perhaps. I guess it's often hard to look at things such as this from an impersonal perspective.

Anyways, I don't necessarily mean not doing much work (quite frankly, as long as people contribute a significant amount, all's well), but more quitting because of having any work (or a bit more, whichever) whatsoever. After all, 'too much' work is subjective.

What I more meant was that the main reason for dissatisfaction at this point in time is due to the extremely high amount of disgruntled people due to infighting or similar problems.

Just because a site has a strict policy for submissions in no way makes it any less of a site for the masses.
Of course it does. You guys are into real criticism, which a lot of people can't take.

I still don't understand why this is such a difficult thing for a member of the administration to address swiftly and adequately.

This is true. Perhaps you should refine the adjectives you (failed to) attach to 'masses', then. :)

I'd agree, but I guess there's not much we can do.

I'd think they're implicit. :p

And that is the problem the Hive faces first and foremost. I'm awful curious what these "changes" Samuraid promises are.

There are pros and cons about being an administrator of such a big site.
Yes, there can be a lot of work that needs to be done.... But I'm not going to whine. I haven't been able to be around as much. That is very true. I'm here every day, but I haven't been nearly as active.
I think part of this problem is that no one from the upper staff wants to really make a decision, because no matter what decision is made, some people are going to be unhappy and so on, so we (I am included in this) sit around and try to fool ourselves that everything is ok and that we don't need to take any drastic actions. Even when this might not be the case.

So, we come further and further and refuse to see the problems that are right in front of our faces. But I think that, this time, something is going to be done. At least, that's what I am hoping. I have been in on discussions, and we have already removed a few staff members in addition to the ones that have recently resigned. (And I would like to thank them for their contributions while they were here.) I am always on the lookout for people who I think would make good staff members, but I haven't seen anyone I really like recently. Though, this could be because I'm not around enough. I think we could use a few more staff members around here to bring some new life into the system. But I also think they should be good people that we can trust. It's not like we're going to pick just anyone....

Also, we need to keep to the "don't call us, we'll call you" policy. Please do not send a message to someone asking for a staff position. If you are what we're looking for, we'll find you. But I digress.

I think a lot of the problems that we have had with the staff are the result of growing problems over time that were not addressed in a timely enough manner, and so eventually exploded out of control at some point or another. I am hoping that some of the changes that are come out of this can create a more cohesive and united staff. We desperately need that. The staff should not be arguing amongst themselves in the public forums. That doesn't help matters at all and only worsens them. So, here's to some improvement. We have a long way to go.

Exactly. Now do something about it!

As raised by more than a few people recently, good choices are getting fewer and far between, and most don't want the job.

Also, we need to keep to the "don't call us, we'll call you" policy. Please do not send a message to someone asking for a staff position. If you are what we're looking for, we'll find you. But I digress.
Somewhat, but yes.

Somewhat, but some people just don't get along.

I agree with PurplePoot simply because he makes great points. Ghan 04, I have nothing against you, but sitting around won't accomplish anything. These problems won't fix themselves (As much as we would all like them to), and it is not the lack of staff members, is the current staff not giving a damn. I'v only been here for a month, and still every day I notice more and more wrong with this site.

No, Ray, everyone but not you wants to be a mod. The Hive Staff members is just too stressed about the Hive's current population. In that incident, they cannot handle their jobs properly because too many forum-rule breakers roaming around the Hive. For instance, chat spammers, trolls. They spam and spam but when they were banned, they will ask stupid questions like: WTF?!?! WHY AM I BANNED?!? THAT MOD IS ABUSING HIS POWERS!!!. You think they are having a good time cleaning our mess and cleaning his name in the same time? Think about it, are you one of those forum-rule breakers? Are you frequently chat-banned? Are you receiving neg reps because of your attitude?

I never said that the mods had fun cleaning up the mess, but I never said that they did all the work that could be doing. The problem is not the lack of mods, it is as you said, stupid people with stupid questions. Why wast time answering a question the person who asked it clearly knows the answer. There are bigger problems to tend to then the ones of the people that can't get over themselves.

No, the problem is clearly the lacking mod because of those forum-rule breakers. Get it? The blame is pinpointed to the mod whenever a forum-rule breaker gets banned. And you know what else? Population. The mods are over-stressed because they think they CANT handle newer and more complicated users and their cases. Now due to over-stress, the mod HAVE TO resign to balance his SANITY.

Ray, even though you cant seem see Ghan_04 participating IN THE CHAT that doesnt mean that he's not working at all. HE GOT LOTS OF STUFFS TO DO TO REFORM THE HIVE. You cant just judge the book by it's cover, he's an over-all ADMIN. Means he does everything, i mean, EVERYTHING to keep the Hive 24 hours germ free

*Bows* I see your point. Do you think the mods actually ban anymore? all they ever do is give -rep. People could care less about neg rep. The mods are too soft, and that drives people to break rules. You are right though, we should employ some more mods, but the problem: The people anymore are corrupt and abusive, it's hard to find anyone.

They cannot do bans and stuffs because they have a name to protect, Ray. They cannot just: OMG! IM EVIL MOD! DONT BREAK RULES OR ILL KICK YOU ASS TO BAN! They are like: OMG! DONT BE SO SCARED! I HARDLY BAN OR KICK PEOPLE! IM A MOD YOU CAN SHARE OPINIONS AT! See? Their jobs is not easy, they have to connect to the hearts of the users. Like Ralle, we can sometimes see him messing up the chat for us to enjoy the ban-free spamming. Ain't that cute?

So your telling me a mod should care that another person is pissed at them for doing their job? If you have to ban someone, do it. If you have proof, the person cannot testify to your power. I know you will disagree with this, but there is no reason to be afraid of the public like this.

About mods not banning people because they don't want to look "mean" or whatever, the mods should have been told during their 1on1 chat with an admin, that they would be expected to punish people if needed. Mods that don't punish accordingly because they don't want to mar their appearance, don't deserve to hold the title of Moderator.

A moderators job is to support the forum, try to prevent rules from being broken and punish accordingly. Let the banned users whine, they need to learn.

We mod/admin do banned people, but some people does not get banned yet because their infraction status does not reach the banned level yet. 10 infraction = Banned

Banning a people is only for those who did extremely serious offense, such as excessive flamming non-stop, massive thread spamming and etc etc.

Banning could be consider as serious stuff that we cannot give it without any valid reason. Neg rep could be consider as light punishment.

Hope that sort it out.

Hmmm. Please revise grammar. :p It brings . . . wrongness to mind.

And to the topic:

Moderation, should be invisible to your everyday user. If you follow the rules, it should never become apperent to you.
Often publicly correcting/punishing people only help by showing everyone else what to/not to do.

You guys are into real criticism, which a lot of people can't take.

Real criticism and rejection, or rainbows, smiles, and faeries flying around anything submitted. The sad part is, real criticism helps a person improve where they lack, and rainbows just keep those baddies bad. Which, I believe is far worse than making a green-foot upset.

I admire how honest and brutal WC3C forums can be, but I just can't stand those ugly square reputation icons. Sorry if this was off-topic, but I just had to respond.
