I recently played this map with Computer AIs and thoroughly enjoyed it. I explored all the possibilities with the Nerubian and Naga races, as well as the new Neutral Heroes: Windlord and Stonemother.
The content in this altered melee will make you say "Wow" in a good way.
I also looked around at the war3map.lua of the map. It contains familiar libraries, some generated code by the World Editor, and what seems to be transpiled code from Typescript to Lua.
Game Design
Compared to other altered melee maps I’ve played, Maxwell's race design stands out. It feels like it tries to match to what the 2000s Blizzard team would have done. As of Patch 2.4, it feels more like playtesting a beta version of a new expansion pack rather than a new installment, as it’s currently advertised.
Similar to the vanilla races in Warcraft III, the Nerubian and Naga races in this altered melee have unique mechanics. The Nerubian race is reminiscent of StarCraft’s Zerg, allowing you to spawn multiple units at once. The Naga race features a slavery mechanic that can bolster your forces and infrastructure but can backfire if used inefficiently.
I appreciate the custom-made spells for each unit, item, and hero, which look professionally made during gameplay. There are mechanics that synergize well, such as Brood Guardians carrying Nerubian Eggs. These eggs can be used for healing during battle, serve as reinforcements, or, if destroyed, add an additional Broodling to your army for 60 seconds. This is just one of the many unique features in this altered melee.
Game Art
Most of the buildings in this altered melee look fantastic. However, some structures resemble existing vanilla structures too closely. The art direction for the icons is great and they are easily distinguishable from one another.
Overall, the ideas in this altered melee are quite creative compared to others I’ve played, which often feel like reskins of the vanilla races. This project shows a lot of promise. I will stay tuned for the updates.
