Altar of the Spider

An animated building for the Undead, or possibly for Nerubians. Uses all ingame textures, has a built in portrait. Was based off of the Altar of Darkness. Also, on the build animation (as shown), it makes use of the undead shared birth model.

Animations:

Build
Stand
Stand Work
Death
Decay

Though I cannot stop you editting the model without permission, I would be pleased if you would ask if you wish to. Also, please give credits if you make use of it.

A useful model alright, but it's way too simple for the amount of polies it has.
Zombie2279 also made an exellent point with the arctic spider, try using the nerubian spider texture or the Crypt Fiend texture on it to make it fit with the undead theme.

Other than that, good use of ingame textures for the structure, I'm sure many users will find this very useful.

I'd vote this around a 3 / 5 because of the High Poly count and the Wrong Spider Texture.

The Scourge originated in Northrend (A very cold place), and their architecture is based on the Nerubian architecture who are a race who dwell in that very cold continent. So an ice-like sculpture of a spider fits the theme, of both the idea I had in mind and an undead theme. I, personally like it, but if someone wanted they can always make a texture for it.

The high poly count is probably due to me having to build the base from scratch just so I could get a decent UV, I cannot reduce that without severely reducing the quality of the model (As I scoured the mpq files for a texture to use before building the base from scratch, it was a last resort to get a decent looking model). At least I do not believe I can. Though frankly, you do not get many of a building on a single map (especially Hero buildings), and plus, I can run it absolutely fine on my laptop which can barely run Dawn of War 1 so it should be alright..

I will change the name though.

That kind of points to why they are necessary, and anyway, there are other buildings with around the same level of polies which were accepted.

Chaos: Altar of Terror - The Hive Workshop - A Warcraft III Modding Site

Has just over a 100 polies less than my Altar. It is not much bigger, its not a multi-tier building either. It's an Altar just the same. Sure, its made by General Frank, so I guess mine is not quite in the same league. But, I have removed all unnecessary polies that I can, the surplus polies are there due to trying to get the UV looking correct.

Yeah, good point. But I didn't approve that one. If I was the one moderating that one, I would've tried to make him reduce the poly count.

Besides, he's my boss. I can't exactly reject his stuff now can I? :p

pollie count is really ridicolous xD congrats on a job well done, but such massive pollie count will almost certainly cause lag or fill the map a bit too much, thus dissalowing other models to be imported 8( perhaps you should try with plain pyramids and some clever UV maping 8) yyou can do awesome stuff with a way less pollies, trust me 8) i'm a modeler myself

The poly count is ridiculous? Haha, you are talking out of your behind. It is like you think the poly count can only just be contained once in a map if that. My god-awful laptop could run 12 of these fine. Hey, you know, you should try putting 15 town halls on a map and see how it runs, since that has more polies than this. If your computer cannot handle that then you really need to get a better one. On another point, tell me the poly count of the footman, as I doubt it is very tiny, I'd expect it is around 650 polies. Meaning 2 Footmen on the screen is equal to one of my altar. INCREDIBLY TAXING!

And pyramids? That would look rubbish, and don't talk to me about clever UV. I spent a long time scouring the various textures for a decent, suiting texture to use. Sure, I could have wrapped the original statue base to some random fitting texture, but I didn't, why? Because the way I have done it is ten times greater than that. I wanted the model to look the best it could. Oh, and I'm a modeller too, have been for 4 years for this game. Trust me 8)

No need to act hostile.

Just because your computer can run it fine doesn't count anything towards the approval process. Your model has too many polies for what it is and needs to be simplified in order to get approved.

If you don't want to reduce the poly count then that's fine. I'll just reject it then.

And HT, that comment was completely unnecessary.

pyritie, you are crazy, compare to othe building polycounts, and you will see they are on that level. Dude, you make no sense.

Which buildings?

If you are talking about the town hall etc that's because it needs polies for its 2 upgrades as well as the birth construction thingy.

This one doesn't have any upgrades and just uses the shared birth model.

I acted hostile because the comment was patronising, as if I've not modelled before. And actually the uselessness of my computer should count, as Wc3 is one of the most graphically challenging games it can play, and yet can easily have numerous versions on the screen without the slightest hint of lag or strain. Meaning that the polies are fine for normal gaming. If a useless laptop can use it, then its polies are perfectly acceptable.

Also I have explained why I cannot simplify it without severely reducing the quality of the model, which would render it a worthless resource. But if you won't listen for the umpteenth time, then reject it. But if you do at least have the decency to remoderate all others which are over the poly count and delete those that are. As having one rule for one person and not another is entirely unfair.

Edit: Oh, and I looked at the model submission rules on the upload page and the FAQ page, there is no mention of upper limits for polies for any type of model. Considering there are other models similar to mine with similar poly counts which were accepted. There are no written rules on the upload page, which lists the model upload rules. My model should be accepted for those reasons alone.

Pyritie wasn't acting patronising... He's trying to HELP YOU GET YOUR MODEL APPROVED by telling you what you need to improve...(Now thats patronising :D).

Pyritie quit bitchin' about the polycount, is not like 10k, 1200 is perfectly acceptable. Especially buildings which also this site lacks and which are always welcome. Also the size is very small.

Then you should reject General Frank's model, not now being a fanboy, ohoho is General Frank, like his models are the best only because being his. And probably you should reject this masterpiece too AlgarvTownhall - The Hive Workshop - A Warcraft III Modding Site

The hostility wasn't to pyrite, but to Misha.

And Pyrite, the rules say absolutely nothing about poly limits, and I have said countless times how I cannot simplify further without ruining the model. And plus, even if you didn't accept those other models, they were still accepted and are part of the database. It really is not fair to have different rules for different people, especially when there are no listed rules which mention poly limits.

I've been through similar stuff PaulH...
I tried getting one of my icons despite it (to the best of my knowledge) being within the rules. but at the end of the day we all need to learn that when a Mod says "No" they mean "No".
Quit complaining now or risk infractions... if you feel oh so very passionate about this PM Ralle with a complaint.

Grim_labour, then I guess that the quality of the icon wasn't good enough. And with this kind of judgment we're gonna have less models than wc3c.

And you would reject those models then? Then, sorry, you are not appropriate as a model mod imho.

1) The icon was liked by many, including General Frank but mods aren't allowed to contradict another mods decision...

2) I would never want to be a model mod... I'm just too lazy

And I have given good reasons for not being able to do that, very good reasons. It is not as if I am refusing out of spite, but because it will truly compromise the quality of the model. I am sure you would rather have resources with a decent quality and a couple of hundred polygons more than the mythical polygon rule says, than crappy ones which are within the mythical polygon rule's guidelines.

flame, flame, flame...... >< paulH, your first answer to my post was mocking, at least to say, and you didn't stoped at that, noooo....... you carried on flaming >< To be Honest...... YES my laptop IS a hunk of junk. but that doesn't give you the right to go berserk and troll, mock, and flame people that try to help. i'm surprised this actually got aproved D= Hmpff.......
