Elenai, here's a paintover of your model of how the topology could be better (I think) I haven't done low poly in awhile, so meh, particularly as low poly as your model
Also, get rid of the ngons above the waste (you just have to cut them)

Forgive me if you think I was wrong in my statements. But I respectfully disagree with you. But yes, I do suck at geomerging and modeling in general. Which is why I have givin up on like 10 ideas that I have tried to start for this contest. Its just too hard with the limited tools I have available. To whoever said you can get by ok with GMAX, is there any way to just place vertexs and link them like you can in milkshape. Cuz if so I would like to know, that would make my life a whole lot easier.

Decided to make an arcane elemental instead. I'm probly going to export all the armor bits separately and geomerge them onto either the fire lord or water elemental, and edit that to make it a bright white or purple/blue color. The texture is crap right now, I'll either work on it a lot more, its just basic colors atm, or figure out some in game textures that would fit well.

Yes, there is a way:
- create any primitive of any shape, doesn't matter;
- convert it to editable mesh (if you want to work with triangles, which you do) and then select all polygons and delete them. You'll end up with an empty container basically;
- now go to vertex sub-object level and click create. Now you can create verts wherever you want;
- to make polygons out of them, go to polygon sub-object level and click create then click on the verts you want your polygon to be (minimum 3);

Though I really don't know why this method is more appealing to you...

ok... my model is done .... only ... the camera doesnt show up :/ annoying really
and it still needs a texture. Animating was a pain in the ass thanks to notetrack, notepad and magos... Note track made one correct animation and when i made another on ... it screwed up the previous ... so i had to make evry animation in a copy and copy the right sequences in the original :/ took me 3 hours and it looks like crap ... pretty much!

Thanks TDR. Well I wanna make vertex because for some reason I just have a hell of a lot of trouble working with the primitives. I like to be able to just freeform stick stuff where I want and link it together. Maybe I will and GMAX somethin for the contest. I have a really sweet idea for my metal/technology elemental that I gave up on earlier.

It's done.

And I love it. I hope you guys do too. No custom textures required, Feel free to make it genormous and it does support teamcolor.

cool its a robot elemental or something? looks maybe like roots or something in some places. but im having trouble with particles (because a wind elemental needs alot of wind) and im really mad at magos' ME its annoying! btw can you geomerge bones or whatever? if so i would so just make the geometry in GMax and put in the bones from other things. gah i hate the need to rig.

Ok everyone, I am in a predicament. I was going to use the sorceress' animations for this guy, but after I did all the geomerging I realized that a lot of her animations are more complex than I thought, so the Metal Elemental sorta falls apart and does random shit. So now I need to animate it myself. As previously stated I only have access to free programs. And I have heard it a hundred times and I still dont know exactly what 'rigging' implies. So if someone could link me to a tutorial or tell me or just give me a place to start on how to 'rig' and animate this guy myself for free, it would be much appreciated.

ok after the discovery that it is in fact possible to export riggings and animations from GMax i have decided to take a whole new kind of entry from what i had before. the Magnes Elementum! (latin for Magnet Elemental)

Note that GMax is not Capable of see through textures so for the moment all black is gunna be see through.

Rigging is assigning parts of the mesh to a bone, simple ... no?
use milkshape ... i find that the easyest

god fucking damnit! dont steal my idea! I already posted a WIP at the 3th page ( http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/795521-post45.html )! Use another concept!
i already animated my magnet elemental!

I'm going to make a gorilla with emeralds protruding from the body. Mainly on the forearms, the face, legs, and back
I've decided to do an experiment and make the mesh in ZBrush... the gorilla itself, anyway. The crystal stuff will be modeled in 3ds Max.
And don't say "OMGZ0r et r s00 highpoliez" You'll see soon enough that it won't be :p

Seriously, 3/4 of these entries have nothing to do with elementals.

Actually the elements aren't limited to only said things. An element, as defined by dictionary.com means:
a component or constituent of a whole or one of the parts into which a whole may be resolved by analysis
In other words, you could make a shit elemental, as it is just one basic component, shit, constituting an entire entity.
However, elementals that are made of more than one "component" can still be valid by following a basic creation of the "elements" you listed, so vines and rocks and wood could make a nature elemental, water and ice could make water, etc.

Geeeh, I dunno, I kinda side with Will on this, people are kinda stretching it too far it seems. I think that it should be kept to fundamental elements and the usual magics from fantasy literature. Making robots and calling them mechanical elementals is just... meh, not what it should be. It's like, if the contest was 'make a chair' someone makes a waffle iron and says 'you can sit on it too.'

**** that definition. We don't go by definition. This is fantasy stuff, not science. Shit is not an element. A ROBOT CANNOT BE AN ELEMENTAL.

If we'd actually go by that this'd be the "Make whatever the fuck you want" competition, not the "Elemental-themed competition".
