As most of us know, Blizzard is setting up a new "Mod Market" where the developers of maps can choose to sell their maps. So when or If your going to make maps, Are you going to sell them or are you going to distribute them for free?

I'll make maps for free.

I'll make all my maps for free.

How many people would just buy a random map? I think the only way to make people buy your map is to first make a really good map that gets pretty famous, and then set a low price for v2. :p

I would only pay if it was a large campaign and had lots of good reviews.

Remember Blizzard has stated that only a small selection of extremely high quality maps will ever become premium maps, so very few people will ever get the chance to sell their maps anyway.

But if I ever got the chance, I would prefer to keep my maps free.

My maps are going to be 100% free. However, I'm scared of the wall of noobs selling thier "subper-kewl map must play" for $25 that will undoubtably come in.

As Bob27 just said two posts above you:

Maps huh. What about really sweet custom Campaigns and Conversions? If I took a whole lot of time to do that and it turned out great than I would sell it.

If I'm ever going to create a project like The Chosen Ones then yes, I'm going to sell it. But I'm not a crazy to spend thousand of hours once again for just few euros. I'll more likely get a real job and get a lot more money. 15€/hour x 1,000 = 15,000€ for 1000 hours of work. Hmm, that's not much, but whatever.

You can only sell maps if you have put unbelivalbe ammounts of work into it. None of the multiplayer maps for WC3 are sellable acording to blizzard.

I think it is SC2's DLC system, aimed at other game developers to make maps for SC2 as an engine rather than new games. Eg would be if square enix made some RPG for SC2.

i think the question is more of... will i even be able to make a map that blizzard thinks is worth it for some one to buy... like super good says i think it will be more of companies like square enix that will make epic games that will be sold... there could be a few exceptions such as the chosen ones, diablo 3, dota... wait i wont kid myself i would never pay for dota, but since i dont think i could even make a game anywhere close to as good as any of those games i wouldnt even have the option to sell my maps

better poll woulda been "would you pay for custom made maps?" :p

But to answer the poll, no I wouldnt sell any maps I created... I mean seriously, why would anybody buy them? any real popular maps would just end up getting pirated and people would play it anyway without having to pay for the map...

/ MAP

I'd give it a try
there probably are people out there who are stu***....eehh...nice enough to pay me
there even are people paying for iphone crap
however I would have to spent lots of time on my map and release it for free at first to make it popular
let's see how things turn out
we have much too less information about everything right now as always

Erm, no. No no no. NOT gonna sell any of my maps, even if - although it most of the time NEVER happens :p - my map is GREAT.
Selling games, is okay, but selling maps in a game that already costs lots of $$ ?

If I managed to create a "premium" map, I'd put it up for money. However, I'd also create a free "demo" of it so people don't buy it without liking it.

Money, I want more and more and more and more....
Well yeah I'm gona sell my map if I ever make it Premium, but that atleast for me and the other 99.9% people that play SC is imposible.

Also If you make an awesome map, for how much will you sell it?? If you ask me, maximum 3 dolars maybe, or 1000, I don't know.

I think nobody should sell his maps. Blizzard probably will take some money from the sold maps, so its jsut for money for them. Keep your maps free, people will still able to share them.
Yea some people worked hard for the maps, but thats jsut rubbbish to sell them. if everyone will refuse to use this would be perfect. It just destroys everything. People will try to keep their systems safe, casue then they would be really worth soemthing. This would destroy the whole mapping community in my eyes.
20cent a map? look how many dls dota have every verison! or diablo3 have on hive! d3 would have made 17 000Euro! So the map would be worth something like that. If you are able to do such much money with maps- people will stop sharing models, icons, trigger ,spells, just everything.
This will corrupt the whole mapping comunity. This will lead to an capitalism in the community. Capitalism is somehow ok in a community if you have to survive with it, but COME ON, i like to do mapping for fun!

So in short: REFUSE THIS $Hit! Map for fun, not for money!

edit: althought i know that rarely anybody will be able to sell maps, is still think that people which wahted $$$$ and some are a shame for our mapping community.

I would totally sell my map. But it would not be at any kind of ridiculous price (over 2 dollars). It would probably be something like 99 cents, so that I do get a little something for it, and yet It would still be able to be widespread. Although in genera I create maps based on Star Wars (my most downloaded maps), which has A) copyright infringement and B) a lot of lil kids who don't have the means to buy a map. But i guess this just forces me to be more creative.

This is probably how they plan to make themselves keep interest in SC2.
Because yea, they lost interest in W3 because WoW brings much more money into their pockets, with that monthly cost.
So if this is gonna help keeping SC2 cared for by Blizzard, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

The other things i wanted to point out have been said by previous posters already.

Why sell them? if your map is actually that good... it'll be available somewhere to download for free... so what's the point of even trying to sell it? I can honestly say that while I have loved a lot of the custom made maps/campaigns here on the Hive... I wouldnt pay to play any cause I already bought the game.

Selling maps could be used just as a charity gimmick. If I was to ever sell maps (not an issue that I've really decided on yet), it would be a complete free version, and a premium that was very similar. Custom content and what not would be GPL.

There are other options, such as monetizing your normal apps, or designing certain maps just for the money.

Price-wise, this potential map would be devised so as to make me the most money, obviously. No reason it has to be crazily low, if you think about the actually money-per-hour of enjoyment you get from a well designed game.

This being said, I'm certainly in favour of open development, so haven't really picked a side yet.

As to the "Oh, this is all evil talk," it's bullshit. Why is Blizzard making money bad? Why is mappers making money bad? It's not like you'll have to spend money if you don't want too, or that this will auto-magically destroy the entire mapping community.

If I was one of those who got on the blizzard premium list (and my team), I would actually consider thinking whether the map would be sold or not. But generally speaking, for sc2, it would probably be free, but "Donations would be welcome to support the development"?
I'd live both with or without it, but I think that Blizzard's idea isn't that bad.

Guys, listen. You might have a premium map, but it won't let you play it unless it senses you have a license for it. Purchasing a map purchases a license. Updates are FREE, and I'm sure 90% if not 100% of the money goes to the developer.

Will I sell my maps?

I plan to make some arcade replayable things like DotA and such that will be FREE.

I also plan to make some badass campaign RPGs, perhaps multiplayer, that will be first-person that will be Premium... For a small amount of money. AKA 2 dollars MAX. More likely one.

You lost reality ? 2 dollars for a map, no chance.20 cent is already much.if just 1000 people play it, you already made 2000$. But no one will pay so much for a map.

Someone said its ok to get money from making maps casue blizzard get money ffom making games. thats :ugly:. Blizzard have to life with its money, it is not a hobby for the blizzard developers. They have to buy cloths, food, and have to pay their home with the money the make. Thats ok, really.
But map making is a hobby, not a work.

i hope most people will refuse this $hit. It will gain a serious buisness, and it will be even harder for many mappers to get they map played. Currently its already hard casue some maps are dominating(dota, footy, dota,TDs,dota,H&A,dota,Hero line war, dota,LTW,dota and did i already mentioned dota?). Thats just life, they dominate but you still have a chance to get your map played. If Suddenly people could life from mapping(in case that they really are able to sell maps for 50cents), they could spend much more time with it and hobby mappers dont standa chance anymore.

People mapp for 2 reasons: its fun to map, and you are proud if many people play your map.Its only half the fun if you have suddenly have strong enemys out there, and nobody play your map anymore.

SO again: i hope you refuse this $hit. People whichs ay that i am talking bull$shit are capitalists.I mean this type of capitalists which nearly destroyed our economy .

Once again, I do not believe you have the ability to just upload any old map for sales. I beleive all sellable maps have to be play tested via blizzard first (to prevent scamming) and only if they are really well made (probably 1000s of man hours in editor work at 10000 in art) will they be sellable.

I do not believe your average person or even group of people will be able to produce a sellable map.

I know this, but its not the point. Poeple will know that, and even if they never reach that, its still possible. They will stop sharing trigger, models icons etc. cause suddenly its worth something.
peopel which says: "i wont sell it for more than 2$" are really getting on my nerves, cause thats freaking much. Me and my friend made a lil game on kong and were happy about thee 1$ we get cause of the advertisement automaticly is added. So for every palyer we got something around 0.2$. Thats a value a map may be selled:con:. Maybe 1cent cause its hard to support a 1/5 cent.

lol, most of the maps people will be creating are predictably just maps which have been created in WC3 already (Like tree tag, dota, etc., just fitted into SC2) so it's nothing "new" at all. I think selling maps in general would be nonsense since nobody would pay to play that map ...
