@PastTime, thank you very much. I really hope the community will continue being this eanthusiastic about our work so that our work may pay off through some epic matches and good fun despite the sad fate of wc3. ;)

@James7: Very good to hear, my goal when setting the tone for the models and textures were to gove them a very somber and gritty mood to reflect the theme of the map.

I also have some awesome news to all of you; i have finally been able to produce a system for causing transported untis to be displayed as attachments inside their transports!
See the dev post here!

This allows you aswell as other players to more easily notice how man untis are in a transport, not to mention looking damn good while doing so!

Thanks for the screenshots Fingolfin. I was actually worried because it looked too small on the first post's map. Now I have another question: What will the European Great Britain player be in control of?

You mean britain?
I personally hope it will be able to make a proper stand against the large powers considering it's size, but yeah, it is much larger than in the old map at least.

I made some balance testing on the veterancy ranks and nerfed them, anyways, here is how my lineup looked:

the battle was held in the unterrained areas by the ural mountains

And here's an engineer salvaging a damaged heavy tank after the battle:

As of now, more than half of the tanks gained at least the first veterancy rank from the fighting thanks to them being continiously being repaired (one tank even reached rank three). Having large battles like theese are most likely to provide you with some veteran units.

I would actually mean "removing debuffs", but in this case i believe he was just repairing.
As i might have told, units who have had their engines damaged will have to be salvaged before they can move properly again (will have their speed reduced by 90% or something).

We have a damage icon for explosive damage, but yeah, could use some new ones.

And this week the second beta was played. All of the northern sector nations were played, Finland, Great Britain, Germany, Soviet, Italy, USA (Atlantic). Balance seemed fine but there's still problems with massing units after late game as the upkeep and public relations system aint in yet.

weee!

EDIT: Ignore that. Anyway, I heard about last Saturday's beta test. From what Worma told me, map sounds great. IF I can convince my stupid parents to buy BNet, maybe I'll be able to test with you guys :p.

Hope you enjoy next beta tests.

I dont know if this has been mentioned above, but why isnt there an Anti-tank infantry? How about a sniper? A heavy gunner that would be stationary and run out of ammo would be nice aswell.

Im extremely interested in beta testing. This looks like one of the best WWII wc3 games I have ever seen. Just let me know

It has been discussed, but we don't think it will be necessary to have such a specified infantry unit, there's already AT guns which work preatty cheap. In World in Flames you don't have that much time to micro such units.

As for the AT question, just lik vuorma said, we are using field guns which do the same job (and there's also the fact that handheld AT-weapons were largely ineffective and their role is greately exaggerated in ww2 videogames). however, we have been thinking of adding some special infantry types, there among medics, mortar teams and MG teams, though due to the space issue we might make a compromization and make theese into country specific units (i.e. germans have MG's, mortars for americans, etc). Having individual units running out of ammo however is not a concern you want to have on a battlefield this scale.

We might end up being in need of adding more beta testers, so go ahead and register to the world in flames forums and maybe you'll get lucky. :)

You'll probably already do so, but if you add medics, they should have some sort of healing aura than having a single heal spell.

Those disagreements made sense, but handheld AT guns were effective versus open-roofed tanks if they shot them from the rear, correct? From what I understand, that would ignite all the ammo; big explosion

And you not having time to bring ammo: that's a legitimate complaint, but it's possible to make the unit have another unit that runs back and forth automatically. Sort of like Uppum in Saving Private Ryan

Not necessary at all, but it'd make a very cool, realistic feeling defense

Well yea what people have to realize is that World in Flames is so huge, also versus this ammo suggestion.

Check this:

About 8000 units were in the map. The ammo system would just be annoying for the player and cause lag. I know you're new to wif, "just saying" :)

Ah, lol, I didn't realize there was that many units. That presents pathing issues as it is. What's the number of units where everyone starts scatter moving? 564? I assume players can only build so many units at a time to prevent this. Is there higher upkeep with more units, like in regular wc3 with higher tax rates?

But I haven't done wc3 too much in a few years, has this been fixed?

Theres no limit to how many units you can have at a time, however we're making a custom upkeep system fitted with the income.
This far, no lag. Will probably just get better when the system is done.

I just came up with an idea of buildings training multiple units at a time, every time you order to train a single unit. For example, you click once to train Infantry, then on the end it would spawn 3-6 units. That would make it easier to the player than clicking 7 times, waiting for a unit to end the training, then clicking again and again...

We had the idea as well but it's actually really easy to make a group of your 12 cities and press Q 7 quick times actually.
Could be possible that we add a X3 version for the infantry however, press once, build three.

The reason we aren't doing this is because you oftenly want to use the remainder of your income every cycle for buying infantry (since they are cheap), or just in any situation where you are short on money, and since tripling the unit count would mean tripling the cost and build time.. then that kind of ruins it.

As a side note though, i just implemented the upkeep system which will hopefully make players choose more carefully wether to spam tanks or just try to do with what they have to build up some resources. It might also help diplomacy, since you will gain on having few enemies/fronts so that you can keep your army size down.

read more about the upkeep system here.

Worma did that, lol? And Fin, but is there a way to buy infantry in a little 'pack', so that some people wouldn't actually do that by buying them one by one?

No not currently but I wrote this in a earlier post:

he wasnt able but he was close a bunch of times. Great britan killed all neutral countries and i was france and i destroyed Vuor/red/germany with GB on my side

Stop calling it france, you were U.S :(
:p

Well yea the upkeep system made things much better, but as none ever attacked Great Britain he had 180k currency and 80k oil in the end, compared to my biggest 8k currency ever through the whole game. So yea, he pwnt us in the end.

I don't mean just 3 units, I mean like, a unit that costs a little more but has the model of many units, making it look like a little troop. Maybe one of the 'units' could be like that so instead of spamming individual units, some would go for the stronger option.

PS: Maybe keeping both the 'unit troop' and 'unit' option for players to choose which to create would give players a wider range of choices too.

Oh, well that would be pretty strange. How the group would rotate from the middle of them, also they all would have to die at the same time in the animation.

It is possible for RTS games to pull of squadrons, but in wc3, just using models, it wouldn't look very nice. It is possible to make multiple models for each # of people, and to the make the death animation being just one dying, then when they die, replace them either different unit, but to animate rotating around a point is the worst part

About SS regiments - what?

By the way, any beta members who would like to play tonight can report in the beta forum. We might host a game if enough people show up. Also depends on wether vuormalainen will send me the map so that i can make some adjustments.

SS are commanders from Panzer regiment and (infrantary). From german units.

they can give some command auras.
