Warcraft III: Reforged Patch Notes - Version 2.0

This is the Reforged 2.0 ramp. WTF? They can't even bother to get the color tones of the cliff tile and the terrain tile to match.

Yep, when the frame around the minimap in Loading screen looks like this... all of the textures are 100% AI upscaled.
Won't somebody actually do QA/QC on these things?

even worse, the frame they made is not even correctly aligned to the minimap on screen. there's a few pixels separating the frame from the map preview on the left and top side.
I simply could not take the shitty loading screen, found some stuff online, made a basic frame and solved the issue by adding a black background on the map preview so it atleast looks like a shadow instead of a hole on the map xD
ignore the chocolate coins lol. it still better than that lazy dragon crap on plain canvas.

@deepstrasz none of the stuff in those images actually exists. These are (probably AI generated) promotional graphics to get people to buy the new Reforged 2.0 release. If you want to understand the technical work that was done, here is my review from last night:

I believe those four arts depicting upgraded textures for all 4 races are internal concept arts for the art team. Somebody overpainted stuff in Photoshop onto SD screenshots. There is some original stuff there that AI would not be able to make. If tru, this artist knows what we really want.

But why none of this has been done is beyond me o__O. The promo team probably had no bloody idea, that this "Classic HD" does not even look like that o__O.

The only real thing that was actually done is rework of HD tilesets. With debatable results...

Add tons of bugs to the pile and we have something that can easily be called "Complete disaster".

This patch is nothing but a manifest of mismanagement, corporate inertia, superficial care and simple idiocy. Nothing really changes at Blizzard and all the Kotick's cronies [and idiots] remain on their comfortable seats. I don't think this flop is intentional. I think it's rather another proof that this multi-billion corporation owned by Microsoft is completely inept at deliverying anything of actual quality, and crewed by people who should never be there.

I guess I just want a version select in Battle.NET and no forced updates. Nothing else. Unless Spencer flush away entire management and hire people of actual brains, there is little else to be expected but more flops like that.

My map seems to still work, and can still be opened in WE. I'm just wondering whether I should remove the custom WC1 music and expect people to change their settings to use WC1 music. Probably yes.

edit: well some portraits are borked. Will have to set them to none in WE.

okay I finshed now war 1 & 2 plus checking out reforged changes atleast for melee (can't talk much about editor)

war1: while I enjoy atleast the realisation of blizzard that war1 exists, something I couldn't be sure about in the past 20 sometthing years. it's just to little. even A move doesn't work properly. while yeah it's great A move exists at all and multi-unit selection beyond 4 it's just to little. And they should have been more brave than trying not to offend that one person in the world that is a war1 purist in teh world.

similar story for war2. I REALLY love the new graphics. it's basically the same just higher res. however: no rally points? no multi building control groups? no build que? same pathing? like really? were you really that desperate to maintain the ~50-ish people who play war2.ru to buy your remaster? it gets certainly the "better than nothing awards" but I think far more - even compared to like sc1 - could have been done for not to much expense. not to mention not remastering the music at all, not even a lossless version of teh music. REEEEEEEEEEEE

war3 2.0: actually, and I am aware many people here gonna hate me for it, but it's actually okay. I know it fucks over modders, but seriously, if you haven't got the memo by now that blizzard doesn'T care about you, it's your fault.

but in the context of pure melee war3; it's really decentt. I like the skin selection, easy hotkey implementation, the multiple choice reforged vs sd stuff. like reforged models with classic icons. I used to make a local files mod simply for using reforged models + terrain from reforged just make reforged without going full classic acceptable for me. now I can just toggle those options on and off. plus reworking backgrounds and mainmenu layouts to look more like TFT is a big plus.

the only options I miss is to disable reforged sound effects.

overall reforged gets now the "better than nothing" award from me. which is proabbly the highest award I could give it, considering my rather extreme stance on it. again modding different story, but tbh. just make your own game at this point and you'll be happier.

This "Classic HD" is a scam lol, I barely notice any difference (except maybe lower framerate as people report)... And if there is a difference, I don't see it being any better then what we had previously.
As for Reforged graphics... I see terrain is different but this "different" doesn't look any better to me.
Surely not worthy of the "2.0" tag, maybe 1.5 at most... :/

just make your own game at this point and you'll be happier.
actually, according to leaks, people already tried that but then activision took legal action against similar RTSes for looking and feeling vaguely similar to warcraft, then also did probably some type of legal gag order on the developers of those games so that we will never know it happened, and the only way that you're hearing about it is me saying, "Just trust me bro," because I heard it from an Activision source who accidentally leaked it to me probably while believing I had been hit by a similar legal event, even though I was not. So obviously, my word of "just trust me bro" is about as believable as those folks from the US government who say that the government is hiding crashed flying saucers from another civilization

But, if you did trust me, would your opinion still be the same? What happened to the steam game, "Purple War," and where did it go? Why did the "Loria" steam game switch to free to play? What is the reason behind these decisions?

our world may never know. But what if it turns out that Warcraft III was a novel technology worthy of patenting (with big money software patents even though technically "Software patents" aren't supposed to be possible), and that making a spinoff either (1) requires making it so different that it isn't the same kind of RTS which Microsoft may own the rights to now that they own both Age of Empires and Warcraft, or (2) is similar enough to be fun and is therefore found by a court to be a patent infringing program that violates Microsoft's software patents?

Not probably, almost certainly, it could have had human touch, but eitherway they ARE DOCTORED and reflect nothing how the game looks.
As for UI changes, i do "likey" restoration of old UI layout, but i wish we got 3D backgrounds back as the default option...
Back Button surely should be on the right corner to fit with how it was in 99% of menues in original Warcraft 3, it doesnt need to be on the exact menu "hanger" as in the main one in TFT, but below it instead of being on the left. Its just jarring if you use the mouse to go back instead of Escape button.
I also despite being delighted by channel page chat benig ffront and center and ui being how RF shouldve been from the start...would preffer to keep the "everywhere" chat, as a button toggle nestled just next to options, and Back button so it does open and allows for chatting when browing and such.
Its one of the few features that could be said to be an actual improvement, i only ever meant it as a con as REPLACEMENT for the Channel chat and being so off to the side and small. I think both should be had.

Kind of like this:
Wc3R2.0newbattlenetpageEditmockupv1.png

buttons on the right and 3rd "CHAT" button like deforged had. but everywhere
Yes, it would duplicate the channel chat, but little bit of reducndancy never hurt anyone, quite the opposite usually. Chat messages also should be smaller so more of them can fit on the screen. It's especially a problem in lobby chat where maximum of 3 messages can be seen at one time, and scrolling the chat is broken as it will randomly jump back to the newest messages, making checking prior messages harder.

On another note, I do still miss me ol' Battle net gate animation and ability of using alt accounts, and all sound effects, and i do wish 3D background were back too. They look better than those 2d animations and og TFT menu aged like fine wine. While i got Reforged die if i DARED to have Chrome open with some tabs with "just" 16GB RAM, TFT menu run at 200fps, smooth as butter and never skipped a beat except when loading my Download map collection, which it did, after a brief hiccup. Reforged always fails to do so, and i need to keep bringing out maps i want to host to smaller folders so it doesnt get a heart attack and die on me or log me out after taking 6 times the time that Wc3 TFT did to load the same exact folder.

I find what happened with the "Classic HD" models to be extremely disrespectful. If this had lived up to the expectations Blizzard sold us, I would be praising it right now because it’s exactly what I wanted: modernized graphics that kept the essence of the original, not some generic MOBA-style visuals like Reforged models.

What really frustrates me is that, despite being a project from a company as big as Blizzard, what they promised and what they delivered are two very different things. For a company to advertise "Classic HD" models and then deliver something totally different feels like a scam. I'm sure many people bought the game expecting it to look as advertised, only to find out it doesn’t. It’s even more infuriating that these screenshots have been quietly removed from official pages, and Blizzard hasn’t addressed this at all, hoping people will simply forget.

Yes, I can still play Warcraft III with its classic graphics, but the disappointment of being misled and let down leaves a bitter taste. If the graphics had truly been what they originally showcased, I would have bought it without hesitation.

Yes, I'm very surprised people are not rioting right now and letting Blizzard getting away with it. I'm pretty sure what they did is illegal. Say what you will about Reforged but actual effort went into it. Making so many AAA level models is not cheap and we got some really epic campaigns based on the Reforged art style. It's just a shame corporate green got in the way of realizing that original Reforged vision. I feel like this 2.0 thing got even less effort into it and it already broke some of my favorite mods.

It's crazy to me that they went to all that effort to redesign the UI in a style more fitting to the original game, which looks better visually, but then they made the functionality of the client even worse in the process (and it wasn't great before...).

The chat/lobby messages are horrifically large, with each message taking up huge amounts of space. Why is the message below the username of the person typing it?

Why does the games filter no longer filter by map name, the most basic thing you would want to filter by other than the game name? If I wanted to play legion td, I would just search up the name of the version I'm after. Now I have to wonder whether they named it 'ltd', 'legion td', 'legion td mega' or '-PH'. Then when I click on the lobby to see who's hosting it (which matters given that a lot of communities have recognizable names), I can no longer see that information - it's been removed from the preview, so that they can display it in large text inside the lobby itself for some reason.

Why can I no longer access my friends list when I'm in the lobby screen or ingame? I get that old wc3 didn't have that functionality either, but there was no reason to reduce functionality for the sake of 'classic', I'm pretty sure most people care more about the visuals of the buttons/background etc. So beyond those visuals, this update feels like a step back in UI functionality, not an upgrade. They also didn't improve on any of the things that were lacking in the previous UI, like the fact that you can't just type in a gamename to join a private game (as you could in the old wc3 23 years ago..)

Icon ReplaceableTextures\CommandButtons\BTNMalFurionWithoutStag.blp is broken in SD mode.
Not even showing up in World Editor and green ingame.

Item rat6 are now Claws of Attack +4. It was Claws of Attack +5 before.

I had some instant score screens when hosting my map and some after playing it and using custom UIs. Are there any other new issues here?

Some list with all issues of 2.0 would be really helpful.

Exactly why i argue that it shouldnt take away few of the things that were good in RF. Old style ui with newer funtionality.

Exactly! It boggles my mind when people are crying about alleged AI art (a modern witch-hunt?) when, if one takes a closer look, he'll see such features that AI would never have guessed as:
1) the purple eggs in the Boneyard;
2) the shiny tip of the AM's staff;
3) the black smoke of the Classic fire effect (which is actually Reforged fire currently, likely due to an oversight).

Add tons of bugs to the pile and we have something that can easily be called "Complete disaster".
Wait, are you one of the same doomsayers spitting venom on an actually constructive addition to the game that has been requested so hard and by so many? I swear, WC3 has not just two disparate populations (proplayers and casuals), it has a third category - Hive people! Who seem to be... even more jaded than the proplayers?

Because if one watches Grubby's stream, there are plenty of people in the comments/chat who unironically do not see an issue with Reforged graphics. Which legit pushes me to think that Reforged's failure was not even due to the mishaps on Blizzard part but due to the toxic attitude of the fanbase. Why? Because a typical casual player has no opinions of his own, he will necessarily adopt the cultural milieu that he's immersed in. And it would be supposed to be the fanbase's task to keep this milieu positive at any cost.

Why keep it positive? Why smile when you're spat upon? Because daddy Blizzard would rather not deal with ungrateful fans at all than to meddle with virtually no dividends but with at a high risk. This is not some newfangled game that we can and should critique. This is daddy Blizzard's attention which may come maybe once a decade. And any attention is good. Without Reforged, we wouldn't have gotten such basic functionality as mana bars, or fast replays, or indeed the widescreen resolution.

Not probably, almost certainly, it could have had human touch, but eitherway they ARE DOCTORED and reflect nothing how the game looks.
But the assumption is that it's work in progress? They don't even have a setting for the Reforged/Classic audio. Some spell effects are Reforged despite Classic HD (Moonwells, Reveal). Grubby is super hopeful and is on the line with the freaking WC3 team (yes, they have a developer team confirmed now). This doom & gloom attitude is utterly clownish at this point when we have a moral duty to celebrate and lick boots. (Thankfully, casuals seem to be loving it, from what I've glanced.)

I am not doom and gloom about it, i just say that it's doctored. If i were doom and gloom i wouldnt bother giving any feedback. I was actually a bit too optimistic getting caught on the "gameplay stills". I hope they do more, but it being smoke and mirrors IN THE PRESS kit, which will surely be what's used for all articles and might be the first thing seen by people is false advertising and they only renamed it to concepts after people getting skeptical.
I hope its just a misstep and they plan to do more, however as it is now it's not entirely worthy of a 2.0 label, should've been 1.5. It's nice that they are trying to remedy some of the shortcomings and outright failures of Reforged, but so far they kind of under and over(removing few good bits of functionality, like friends and chat everywhere) do it at the same time.

EDIT:
The right click box that allows for downloading maps and reporting and alike is far too small atleast on particular resolution and on 14" screen of my laptop. It should be the size it was prior. Its both hard to read and navigate quickly at so small size.
rightclickmenuistootiny.png

Also buttons for Joining, Creating and Loading should be bigger, roughly the size of hte "Back" button each and Join could perhaps be Green coloured like in RF menues, or in case of honouring classic Warcraft 3 installers and bonus dvd red.
EDIT2: At windowed fullscreen on my 2nd 1080p Monitor it actually looks correct and is bigger, so it might be just a scaling issue if i run it at lower resolution on the main screen.

Damn Blizzard really gave the middle finger to you "SD Players" :xxd: zero f*cks given xD

On the other hand, at least HD seems to be fine:
WC3ScrnShot_111424_223430_000.png
WC3ScrnShot_111424_230746_000.png

I think the only good thing from this update was the new "Show Command Button Hotkey" option LOL

And finally what were they thinking with this?? Giving us the option to have both Reforged and Classic units in the game😂🤣
WC3ScrnShot_111524_024426_000.png

This update is overall so funny I don't know what's going on :mwahaha:

Hmm, I wonder why. Maybe because making new models and textures requires an actual work to do? A work that is done by professinal artists and modelers, whom Blizzard would need to hire and pay their salaries. From Blizzard's perspective, why do all of that for a product with a low financial value if instead, you can just do a low effort batch upscale of all textures and icons entirely for free? Probably took them less than an hour to do that.

I can confirm that Reforged 2.0. doesn't work anymore on Windows 7. Some people have complained about this problem after the big update.
Both game and the World Editor display an "unexpected error" message upon starting from Battle.net app on Windows 7.
I'm fine with that issues since I'm currently using Windows 11 64-Bit.

Also, I'm not sure if Reforged 2.0. still works on Windows 8.1. No mentions about the current status for this OS.

Now I highly suggest upgrading your system to at least Windows 11 (or at least 10) as that might be a problem.
I heard that some apps and games have dropped their supports for Windows 7 and 8.1. after Microsoft no longer provide an official support for both of them.

More info about this problem: Warcraft 3 Reforged Patch 2.0.0. does not work on Windows 7

(PS: I'm not an official Blizzard team member, but it's a good info).

My second monitor is 23", and its fine on that too. I just mean that scaling is broken on the other screen when displayed at resolutions below 1080P. For whatever reason it defaults to 720p(1280x720) on that one. Also other popups like map download one get much larger. So elements either dont scale and get much bigger or shrink needlessly. It should stay relatively the same regardless of resolution just get blurier when scaled to fill the screen.

Developers adding separate portrait model settings for every unit in the World Editor is awesome, though it did require some bug fixes on my end. On the bright side, I can now show Ranger/Paladin upgrades with portrait changes, which I love. Plus, my map is 145 MB lighter thanks to the music files being included in the original package—super convenient. Solid update overall!

Sooo let's see here.
They LITERALLY AI-Upscaled all textures from WC1 and WC2, added some widescreen support and re-released them for a quick cash grab.
This could literally be done as a mod by one person in a couple of days. - just batch-AI-upscale some textures and that's it.

The new "Classic HD" graphics have gotten a similar treatment - as far as I can see it's the same SD models (cuz you can't AI upscale vertices and models yet lol), so they AI upscaled the textures a bit and slapped a 2.0 sticker. Very low effort. I only hope maps and campaigns aren't broken again.

I notice they didn't expose the WC1 and WC2 music in the editor, which kinda sucks. I wanted to compare them to the custom music I'm using in my map, but I'll have to use CASC viewer and see if I can find it that way.

It appears custom music only overrides the WC3 music. If the user has their music set to WC1 or WC2, it will play the default music regardless of imports. There doesn't seem to be a way to override ALL music regardless of user settings.

Edit: well I assume you can override the WC1/WC2 music by importing to its path.

The new UI scale Feature affects Frames with Ancestor/Parent
BlzGetFrameByName("ConsoleUIBackdrop", 0)

and simpleframes with Ancestor/Parent
BlzGetFrameByName("ConsoleBottomBar", 0)

Map script can overpower the UI scale value with BlzFrameSetScale. But one needs to repeat it every time the user opened options and pressed save. Because the options will update scale when the slider is/was changed and overpower BlzFrameSetScale.

BlzFrameSetScale(frame, 1) makes frame have normal size

BlzGetFrameByName("ConsoleUI", 0) is not affected

One can know by map script how big the scaling is by print(BlzFrameGetWidth(BlzGetFrameByName("ConsoleBottomBar", 0))) It varies from 0.8 to 0.4.
Therefore the option scale factor is:
100 UI scale = 100% size
50 UI scale = 75% size
0 UI scale = 50% size
