LotR: Dagor Dagoroth 4.4

"When the world is much older, and the Valar weary, Morgoth will come back through the Door of Night, and the Last Battle of all will be fought, and all peoples shall grow young again, and their dead awake..."

~ Prophecy of Dagor Dagoroth (The Last Battle) written by J.R.R Tolkien, abbreviated.

In short, this is a Lord-of-the-Rings-Themed Footmen Frenzy map. I've been working on it for about 2+ Years now, and finally decided to release it.

Gameplay:

This map plays mostly like any other Footmen Frenzy, with a few key differences that I hope help differentiate it from the others:
  • First off, Players are divided between "Good" and "Evil (6 each for both sides). This includes Heroes.
  • The map is a little bit larger to allow for more strategy and larger battles.
  • There are only four tiers (no "Dark Knights"... Well, almost none ;) ).
  • The damage and armour system is Tier-themed rather than using normal Warcraft damage and armour types (Inspired by later versions of Footmen Frenzy).

For anyone who has never played Footmen Frenzy here is a quick guide:

  • You and up to two other allies begin at one of the end-most primary directions of the map. Your enemies will occupy the others.
  • Players can pick a Hero from one of the Taverns outside of the "main" area to lead their forces right from the beggining.
  • All Players have a Barracks, which continously spawns units and can upgrade to spawn better units. If you lose this building, you are defeated.
  • The goal of the map is to defeat the other Players by destroying their Barracks.
  • Gold is gained from killing enemies. There are various Shops across the Map that can be used for purchasing items. There are also Workshops from which you can construct Siege Engines for your army.

There is something of an AI for anyone who wants to play singleplayer (or more). It can be activated by filling Player-Slots with Computer Players. The AI can also use Heroes if the Computer is set to "Normal".

Another feature is "arrival quotes" (when a Hero is chosen) and "kill quotes" (when a Hero kills another). These help characterize Heroes, and add a little bit of flavor to the game.

Factions:

The following Factions are currently added:
  • Gondor: The proud Kingdom of Gondor. The starting Faction for "Good" Players. Mostly balanced, with a focus on defense.
  • Rohan: The Home of the Horselords. Initially starts balanced, but later Tiers make it Cavalry-focused.
  • Northmen: Men of the Anduin, Laketown and Dale. Very versatile, with weak-but-numerous early units, good Archers, and strong final-Tier Melee.
  • Dwarves: The stubborn Dwarves, mostly of Durin's-Folk. Slow but durable through all Tiers.
  • Eriador: The various people of Eriador include Hobbit, Dunedain and Elves. Initially starts with weak-but-numerous units, but later upgrades to good Ranged, strong Melee, and mystical Casters.
  • Sindar: The Elves of Lothlórien and Mirkwood. Entirely Ranged-focused.

  • Wicked Men: The Men in service of Dark forces, from Rhun in the East to Harad in the South. The starting Faction for "Evil" Players. Mostly balanced, with a focus on defense.
  • Mordor: The heart of all Evil in Middle-earth. Initially focuses on weak, spammeable troops, but later gets access to devastating Melee troops.
  • Isengard: The fighting Uruk-Hai. Focuses on high armour and damage, but units spawn slowly.
  • Goblins: The hordes of the Misty Mountains, particularly of Moria. Goblins are weak and numerous, but they later bring their War Beasts into the fray.
  • Angmar: The frozen Realm of the Black Numenoreans. Units have high damage and armour, and later are able to wield dark sorcery against their foes.
  • Dol Guldur: The fell hordes of Dol Guldur. Somewhat balanced troops.

Heroes:

Currently included Heroes:

Good:
  • Gandalf the Grey (Grey Wizard and Member of the Fellowship of the Ring).
  • Aragorn (Heir of Isildur and Member of the Fellowship of the Ring).
  • Boromir (Captain of Gondor and Member of the Fellowship of the Ring).

Changelogs:
  • Fixed shadows on map.
  • Fixed Players not bring defeated bug.
  • Fixed Tower Tooltips.
  • Fixed "Advantage" and "Disadvantage" Barracks auras canceling each other out on friendly units.
  • Increased Trebuche damage.
  • Increased Tower range slightly and fixed damage.

(Additions):
--- Added 8 new Heroes (Eowyn, Galadriel, Arwen, Radagast, Saleme, Shelob, Karsh, Mordirith).
--- Added AI Heroes (Use "Normal" Computer Player to enable them).

(Changes):
--- Removed "Advantage" and "Disadvantage" from Bases.
- Reason: Proved to be too much clutter and weren't really useful.
--- Changed Gandalf's abilities back to standard-based ones.
- Reason: Custom Abilities were either broken or weren't performing well.
--- Gothmog now summons a Drummer Troll instead of Morgul Orcs.
- Reason: Morgul Orcs weren't really anything unique summon-wise. Drummer Trolls actively boost your army while providing a durable shield for your forces, though they don't do much damage to balance it out, but they do gain "Pulverize" once the summon is at its apex.
--- The Witch-King now summons Wights with his "Morgul Blade" ultimate. Wights are weak but fast units that can become stronger Wraiths if they kill an enemy.
- Reasons: While summoning all Nine Nazgul was fun, I plan on adding other Nazgul Heroes at some point and wanted a more fitting summon.
--- Replaced "The Dead" Faction with "Dol Guldur" Faction.
- Reasons: The Dead never felt very cannon, and were more of a placeholder. Plus I wanted Spiders :D

(Fixes):
  • Fixed Towers.
  • Fixed Base Button Positions.
  • 4.3.1: Fixed AI Revival Bug.
  • 4.3.1: Fixed Towers (again).

  • Added "The Mouth of Sauron".
  • Added "Glorfindel".
  • Add "Faramir".
  • Added "Wulfgar".
  • Various Bugfixes and Balance Adjustments.
  • New command buttons and icons.
  • Gimli's "Sunder" ability replaced with "Sundering Leap" ability.
  • Added the Arcballista, Crossballista, Siege Tower and Petard.
  • Added Passive Abilities for all Tier-4 units.

Seems like a really dedicated LotR Footman Frenzy styled map. Could get more deep with custom scripted stuff but overall it does its job. Approved. If you want more reviews, you should participate in the The Grand Review Exchange! R U L E S Site...

Hey just played the map.

You forgot to change the upgrade tooltips for towers. Upgrade to Guard Tower is Upgraded Ballista Tower then to Ballista Tower, Cannon Tower to Catapult Tower.

Hm I'm not sure if I'm misremembering but I recall any unit can hire units from merc camps and taverns in vanilla games. Here you require heroes to hire units from workshop.

I feel like the trebuche should be stronger. Catapults seems better since its cheaper and mobile. Maybe give them longer range?

Would be nice if the ai also used heroes. Also I didn't recieve a victory screen and strangely only Player 12 is not defeated even though they have no units or buildings. Also I didn't notice it on the screenshots but ingame there are shadows. For a bit I thought there are a grace period and I cannot leave my area but no it was just shadows. Maybe you need to use Calculate Shadows and Save Map on the File menu? I never used it before so I don't know.

Other than that was fun.

Oh damn I didn't see that. I'll fix it right up.

I think that was the case. I might change it in future.

I'll definitely look into that. I want Siege to matter in this map to make it feel more LotR-like.

This is definetly planned but I'm not sure how to go about it quite yet.
Also I didn't recieve a victory screen and strangely only Player 12 is not defeated even though they have no units or buildings.
Hmm, that's strange. I'll see what the problem is.

Those shadows have been haunting me since day one DX I've been searching for a solution but I didn't know about calculate shadows. I'll look into into.
Other than that was fun.
Glad you had fun :) thanks for the review and feedback. I'll look into all these things.

Also here a screenshot if you don't know where that is. By the way, I just tested it and it fixed the weird shadows for me.

ADDITIONAL NECESSARY INFORMATION
  • A credits list in the map thread description is required where the names of the resource (models, skins, icons, spells, sound etc.) authors are mentioned along with the specific resource. It would be a luxury to have links leading to the used resources. Credits in the Quest Log would be appreciated too.
  • A detailed changelog in the first post would be helpful to reviewers and notify fans about the newest implementations to your map.
  • Map thread tags are important. Please use those that fit and not more or none.
