Wow, it is hard to work without editing. It overcomplicates so many things.
I have an idea, already started, but no WIP yet,
it is hard to decide for a stone texture/model compilation when one is not allowed to create one.

I see those screenshots flowing but every screenshot was taken as if it was scenary terraining contest. I suppose those screenshots should be taken from player point of view considering it is playable terrain, so all its beauty should reflect from that camera angle of the gameplay.

But hey. Considering this is playable, this could be made a cinematic, which is playable, but in cinematics scenary terraining is possible, right? Or let's consider Tickles work, where you basically play from Mario perspective, like 2D, it can also be scenary, it is playable, does it count as playable terrain if made in such manner?

I personally don't find this theme attractive, also quite busy at the moment, so I might not participate.

Here is my final submission:

Rufus presents:
Loraderon Dirt Desert

Features:
-A classic warcraft touch desert.
-Truly playable, as there is plenty of room for unit to walk around.
-I made the map size small so that the terrain wouldn't feel repetetive.
-Simple, but elegant execution and decoration.

An overview of the map
desert-2-png.242124
An interesting screenshot with an exotic angle
desert-1-png.242123
Another angled screenshot, this time with game view settings
desert-3-png.242125
A full picture of the map from underneath
desert-4-png.242126
Gameplay screenshot
desert-5-png.242127

I have been working a lot with angles and nice looking screenshots in this submission, so you better enjoy it!

Enjoy!

Unfortunately I forgot to take any WIP pictures, so I cannot prove the resource is mine. :/

Enjoy!

LoL
That's a pretty simple submission,if you ask me. It can be used as a template more,I think :eekani:

Oh, all kinds of deserts are acceptable? Huh.
Well, anyway, I think i'll start now. I'll post my progress tomorrow, I think.

Also, just for clarification, as long as it's playable right? Can it be just a part of the whole map? I was thinking of a city oasis in the desert..

I think your question was directed at "how much of the map must be a desert?" Like, in the case of making a "city oasis in the desert" like you said, it means how large/protagonizing the city can be in his map without being accused of not being a desert-themed entry.

In my opinion it is okay to have a city/spaceship/whatever in your map as long as the desert is still proeminent and playing an important role with terrain aesthetics and gameplay.

If still in doubt, I recommend posting some WIPs so we can see it and better talk our shit :)

I'm pretty sure it has to be a complete map, that's why there are size restrictions.

Its still one whole map. I think I meant something like "Town = Part of an RPG map"... But yeah, that was a pretty dumb question.

Anyway, here's my wip. I've only worked on it for a couple of days then my keyboard broke. I'm currently running on an on-screen keyboard so terraining is hard.

006.png

It'll basically going to be egypt on a floating platform. The center will have a mosque-ish catle surrounded by a few buildings. There will also be an outer ring that I'll fill with more buildings.

I;m still looking for a white skybox and a model for that pointy dome mosques have. That cliff texture is giving me a headache too, can't seem to replace it like how I replaced the tile (I edited the default texture to match the custom tile).

That looks fckin awesome mate!
I do however wonder if it will actually be acceptable as desert, as it is more of a castle/fortress.
Anyway, this looks really good! Are those all standard wc3 doodads?

I know, i'm a bit worried about that, but acceptable or not I'm going to use this in my other map anyway so it isn't a complete waste.

Yeah, I edited some of the models and took some from the UTM but most of the ones I used are the default models. Thanks.

This one is amazing. I have so much respect for people who can make common WC3 doodads look interesting again!

@PROXY: thanks, but I don't know what will I change, the ice cliff or the rock? I don't know where to find fitting cliffs around.

Since I'm enrolling for the next school semester of mine, it'll be a slow work for now. Here's the north part of the map, I'm gonna need another cliff to replace the rock if it doesn't look fitting.

If you mean edited like opening in a model editor and edited, that's not allowed.

Why? I picked a blizzard model, edited it a bit in the model editor then imported it. Isn't it just like using custom models? Or is creating custom models specifically for the map, not allowed?

E:
....I don't see a rule like that though...

Is requesting model edits not allowed too?

Map may consist of any resource as long as it is public.
Unless a used resource belongs to either Hive Workshop or Wc3Campaigns, a link to the used resources must be provided.
Resources made public after the launch of the contest are not permitted.

These outline the rules pretty well, I know that if the edits are very small, then they
may be accepted, but I'll leave that for fladdermasken to decide. But the general rule
of thumb is that you are not allowed to tailor models specifically to fit your contest
submission. We had some problems in the past regarding this.

As Keiji already points out, nothing is allowed.
Neither requesting it nor doing it yourself.

The reason why is that users abused it in the past, using tricks to spice up their terrain with an unusal method.
Trust me, the terraining contests would be quite different when resource creation and edits were allowed.

It's a bummer, but with my current progress, even if my edits were accepted I didn't think i'll be able to make it to the deadline, so it's fine I guess.

Anyway, here's the progress I made this weekend. Hopefully, i'll be able to replace the edits later.

That city will be surrounded by a deep ravine, maybe with a river in it. Further out will be the desert.
I'll work on the environment last sine they don't require much detailed attention.

@Siscon Onii-san
It would be a shame, but if you cannot make it to the deadline,
what do you think about finishing it and uploading it to the official map section,
considering the suggestions APproject gave you in the post above ?

I got really pissed off yesterday after my pc crashed and blue screen, sh*t! My entry map can't be open anymore and got downed. After watching Independence Day 3 hours later, I got motivated to retry my entry again.

I have a question, will terrain tiles be used even if it's not in the Skin section?

Oh the blue screen... damn that's bad. Well nice that you got working on it again though. I think it is okay to use custom tiles that aren't from the site as long as you give the link to where you found them. Good luck with it!

Hi, i'm new here and i wanna ask some question:
1. Is the map only contain terrain and doodoads?
2. Can i use import models of terrain?
3. "No image editing tools may be used to enhance the terrain previews (however cropping is allowed)", what is this mean?
Thanks before...

1. It may contain everything World Editor has to offer, but only the terrain (terrain, doodads, weather, fog, lighting) will be judged.

2. As long as the models are openly available, yes.

3. You may not edit the images of your map with Photoshop or any other image-editing software to enhance its appearance.

To add to 2., as long as they are available to the public and created before the contest started.
