v3.4

Introduction / Author's word

Seth's Reign is a single player RPG by APproject. Map's story is based on an interpretation of The Legend of Osiris myth. Map is fully voice acted by 5 voice actors, it also contain wonderful ambient egyptish music, up to 5 tracks in total. Another features of note: many sound effects, up to 300 custom units, 18 custom hero spells and a possibility of 729 spell combinations, up tp 250 custom doodads, approximately 80 custom items and 350 custom abilities.

Gameplay may be challenging as it would require a lot of insight and effort to spot various things, such as hidden artifacts. There are two difficulty levels - normal and advanced. It is rather difficult game, so even normal mode might be challenging for some players as there are no easy walkthrough selection. Advanced mode may be harder, as enemies becomes way stronger, but advanced mode offers not only difficulty increasement, but also unlocks 1/3 of possible hero spells, providing gameplay variations.

I was planning to protect it, but I decided not to, I see no point in that considering it can be unprotected anytime. Creation of this map lasted nearly 5 months. (2012-07-11 - 2012-11-30)

Map would not be updated with new stuff, I may only fix bugs and change some things that are considered unacceptable or buggy. There might be some minor bugs that might be exploited on the occasion, I am willing to fix major ones if it is discovered. Map contains a lot of leaks, but it doesn't matter, since map is Single Player and leaks are not being noticed at all. As far as I have played, I didn't face any fatal errors and I hope there will be none. There are some transmissions with considered egyptish text, it is not egyptish, it is only an interpretation of text. As map is not protected, do with it whatever you wish, but I recommend playing map absent editing and cheating, I leave it to player's conscience.

Storyline

Story is the base of Legend of Osiris myth, basically gameplay follows its algorithm.

Here it is fully written one version of this myth that I tried to follow while making the map.

Oh my brothers and my sisters, gather around me that I may tell the tale of the Before-Time, of the Golden Age when the gods walked upon the earth with us. Know then that in those ancient days, long before even the grandfather of our Pharaoh's grandfather was born, Osiris the great-grandson of Ra sat upon the throne of the gods, ruling over the living world as Ra did over the gods. He was the first Pharaoh, and his Queen, Isis, was the first Queen. They ruled for many ages together, for the world was still young and Grandmother Death was not as harsh as she is now.

His ways were just and upright, he made sure that Maat remained in balance, that the law was kept. And so Maat smiled upon the world. All peoples praised Osiris and Isis, and peace reigned over all, for this was the Golden Age.

Yet there was trouble. Proud Set, noble Set, the brother of Osiris, he who defended the Sun Boat from Apep the Destroyer, was unsettled in his heart. He coveted the throne of Osiris. He coveted Isis. He coveted the power over the living world and he desired to take it from his brother. In his dark mind he conceived of a plot to kill Osiris and take all from him. He built a box and inscribed it with wicked magic that would chain anyone who entered it from escaping.

Set took the box to the great feast of the gods. He waited until Osiris had made himself drunk on much beer, then challenged Osiris to a contest of strength. Each one in turn would enter the box, and attempt, through sheer strength, to break it open. Osiris, sure in his power yet feeble in mind because of his drink, entered the box. Set quickly poured molten lead into the box. Osiris tried to escape, but the wicked magic held him bound and he died. Set then picked up the box and hurled it into the Nile where it floated away.

Set claimed the throne of Osiris for himself and demanded that Isis be his Queen. None of the other gods dared to stand against him, for he had killed Osiris and could easily do the same to them. Great Ra turned his head aside and mourned, he did not stand against Set.

This was the dark time. Set was everything his brother was not. He was cruel and unkind, caring not for the balance of Maat, or for us, the children of the gods. War divided Egypt, and all was lawless while Set ruled. In vain our people cried to Ra, but his heart was hardened by grief, and he would not listen.

Only Isis, blessed Isis, remembered us. Only she was unafraid of Set. She searched all of the Nile for the box containing her beloved husband. Finally she found it, lodged in a tamarisk bush that had turned into a mighty tree, for the power of Osiris still was in him, though he lay dead. She tore open the box and wept over the lifeless body of Osiris. She carried the box back to Egypt and placed it in the house of the gods. She changed herself into a bird and flew about his body, singing a song of mourning. Then she perched upon him and cast a spell. The spirit of dead Osiris entered her and she did conceive and bear a son whose destiny it would be to avenge his father. She called the child Horus, and hid him on an island far away from the gaze of his uncle Set.

She then went to Thoth, wise Thoth, who knows all secrets, and implored his help. She asked him for magic that could bring Osiris back to life. Thoth, lord of knowledge, who brought himself into being by speaking his name, searched through his magic. He knew that Osiris' spirit had departed his body and was lost. To restore Osiris, Thoth had to remake him so that his spirit would recognize him and rejoin. Thoth and Isis together created the Ritual of Life, that which allows us to live forever when we die. But before Thoth could work the magic, cruel Set discovered them. He stole the body of Osiris and tore it into many pieces, scattering them throughout Egypt. He was sure that Osiris would never be reborn.

Yet Isis would not despair. She implored the help of her sister Nephthys, kind Nephthys, to guide her and help her find the pieces of Osiris. Long did they search, bringing each piece to Thoth that he might work magic upon it. When all the pieces were together, Thoth went to Anubis, lord of the dead. Anubis sewed the pieces back together, washed the entrails of Osiris, embalmed him wrapped him in linen, and cast the Ritual of Life. When Osiris' mouth was opened, his spirit reentered him and he lived again.

Yet nothing that has died, not even a god, may dwell in the land of the living. Osiris went to Duat, the abode of the dead. Anubis yielded the throne to him and he became the lord of the dead. There he stands in judgment over the souls of the dead. He commends the just to the Blessed Land, but the wicked he condemns to be devoured by Ammit.
When Set heard that Osiris lived again he was wroth, but his anger waned, for he knew that Osiris could never return to the land of the living. Without Osiris, Set believed he would sit on the throne of the gods for all time. Yet on his island, Horus, the son of Osiris and Isis, grew to manhood and strength. Set sent many serpents and demons to kill Horus, but he defeated them. When he was ready, his mother Isis gave him great magic to use against Set, and Thoth gave him a magic knife.

Horus sought out Set and challenged him for the throne. Set and Horus fought for many days, but in the end Horus defeated Set and castrated him. But Horus, merciful Horus, would not kill Set, for to spill the blood of his uncle would make him no better than he. Set maintained his claim to the throne, and Horus lay claim himself as the son of Osiris. The gods began to fight amongst another, those who supported Horus and those who supported Set. Banebdjetet leaped into the middle and demanded that the gods end this struggle peacefully or Maat would be imbalanced further. He told the gods to seek the council of Neith. Neith, warlike though wise in council, told them that Horus was the rightful heir to the throne. Horus cast Set into the darkness where he lives to this day.

And so it is that Horus watches over us while we live, and gives guidance to the Pharaoh while he lives, and his father Osiris watches over us in the next life. So it is that the gods are at peace. So it is that Set, wicked Set, eternally strives for revenge, battling Horus at every turn. When Horus wins, Maat is upheld and the world is at peace. When Set wins, the world is in turmoil. But we know that dark times do not last forever, and the bright rays of Horus will shine over us again. In the last days, Horus and Set will fight one last time for the world. Horus will defeat Set forever, and Osiris will be able to return to this world. On that day, the Day of Awakening, all the tombs shall open and the just dead shall live again as we do, and all sorrow shall pass away forever.

An antidote? A very nice idea.

Yeah, antidote would be very nice.. had to buy potion and drink both charges coz the poison almost killed me.. (even if it was just from the golden scorpion)

BTW, When I entered the shaman skeleton boss (forgot it's name), the gate closed and the warrior companion was trapped outside.. but I was surprised when it when to the side of the gate and entered.. So, I went out the way he entered and I was able to kill the boss without getting harmed..

attachment.php

RED Line is how my hero walked
TEAL is the Royal Skeleton I used as the tank
=========================

And can I get a hint about the .. Ra's obelisk peakflame? (is the name correct?) Do I have to destroy it all at the same time!? Or do I have to destoy them in the correct sequence?

EDIT:
Read some comments.. so I do have to set them all on fire... Hmm.. already used the summoning book... hope there's another way.. :/

EDIT 2:
Tried using other unit to attack it.. however, they can't... I also tried damaging the obelisks first then attacking them so that the obelisks are just one shot.. but the flame just extinguishes too fast.. :/ Any tips?

Antidote can be found in v3.4 in desersts near rocks and grass as a growing plant.

I see, yes it is a bug, it should not happen, thanks for reporting.

Considering you are with Ra's spells, you should be able to cope with it. Hit obelisks until they all four are left with 1 hit shot. Get read for a quick combo and stand in the middle. Shoot one with a simple attack, then the nearest one shoot instantly with Blast, third one clockwise or opposite with Last Beat and last one instantly with another hit. Then be ready to burst an orb which may also require quick damage dealt.

Hey man I was playing the map version 3.3 (I know is not the new one), and I found a bug at the tomb. The bug is that when you are fighting the skeletal middle boss, the one that is in a room with two gates and some sort of obelisk/pillar in the middle, that attacks during battle. What happens is that when you enter and the door gets closed, if you click to go outside the room, the hero will find a hole and sneak out of the room, allowing you to kill the boss outside the room, with ease. I don't know if you already solved it, but since I don't see it mentioned in the ver 3.4 changelog, I'm pointing it out.

Oh yeah, In the part where Atemu travels by boat, The ally (the guys you get as an ally after defending his caravan) was left behind the dock area.. maybe it would be better if it rides with you on the boat.. I had to use the teleport stone so that he could join in battle again, which is kinda inconvenient.. and I think the teleport would be better and can be used faster if it was placed beside the hero skills button, plus it will free an inventory slot.

and another suggestion, in the UI where food is supposed to be show, what about you show the version number there? It would be really good If players can see the version up there..

And Really nice game.. had fun until it ended..:D

Thanks. :) I may look into that boat issue. Well, teleport stone is an item that allows to teleport, it would not be like an ability, plus there are no space for teleport ability at the side of spells though. Version is notified in front of the name before launching it, I would not have this game like most of multiplayer maps with infos, credits and version notes in the game itself, it lose charm in my opinion. But thanks for suggestions as well as for the rating.

JNPG was not used during creation of this map. It was made on a classic WorldEditor absent any addons or changes. It contains a limit (12k) doodads and map's size is set to nearly max one. All this can be achieved without JNPG. But of course you can exceed any limit with JPGN.

Where can I find Mukhk in the desert?

I have already kill the other 2, but I just can't find Mukhk through the desert. Are there conditions for this boss to show himself, as it is frustrating to keep wandering in the desert for encounter.

Go south-west from the settlement through the desert and it may rise from the sand. It is located at the middle of that entire area between first and second tombs, little bit north-west from the huge stone you reveal after leaving first tomb. Be aware of its attempt to escape, when it vanish in sand, it has a certain path that he follows, make sure you catch him by approaching as close as you can to force him stop wandering.

You can tell by my name that i am into egyptian mythology and history, but what i got from playing this map for 1 hour is, sorry, not much more than boredom.

It might very well be, that i don't belong into your target group (hack 'n' slay), but even for an action-rpg approach, the game experience seems ridiculous, which i will explain:

1) Mobs pursue the player forever and mostly do ignore summoned mummies, which prolongs easy fights unnecessarily.

2) Kiting mobs seemingly endlessly makes the start very frustrating (at least in the first tomb, centaurs, scorpions and snakes are a joke).

3) I immediately stopped playing when i had to kill the first boss... it's absolutely easy, because his spell will not even hit once and the player can outrun him, BUT it takes forever to bring down 5000 hp that even regenerate. Why even bother?

As a conclusion:

I like the music, most voice-overs, terrain, well the overall cosmetic aspect is solid indeed.

I highly dislike the gameplay however, which is just utterly bland. Maybe only to me, as i have played action rpgs since Diablo 1.

Nothing really to reply, it is your opinion and I respect it. But one thing that I noticed is that you try to put every game, including this, into some kind of specific frame of proper RPG and when you collide with something not so clonish and perhaps too silly to your eye, you back off immediately. Well, that's my impression, hopefully wrongly figured. No offense intended.

Gameplay is indeed very simple and perhaps lacking at some points, but it was intended to be simple and not high on systems that I really dislike. I didn't try to hit for a lot of audience with making this map as current games does such as Diablo. It is for those who enjoy following storyline, amazing atmosphere, challenges and have time on their side to surf world and solve problems as soon as hack'n'slay falls from mind.

Hello APproject, I am a HUGE fan of you and ALL your maps. You have amazed me time and time again, from Decisive Night to Master of Tides to Rise of Gigantes. Your maps have a very professional air about them, and each is very unique and fun. I know I have not replied to your other maps yet, but as you can probably see, I am relatively new to the Hive. Now that Seth's Reign has come out, I would like to congratulate you for your hard work. This map is simply amazing. The terrain is awesome (as it is in all of your maps), the story is powerful and well-written, the abilities are very nice looking and unique, the items are nice, and the voice acting is very good, which is not the case in many maps with voice acting. I've read every post up till now (all two hundred twenty) and although people do have the right to state their opinion, I believe that this map deserves much more praise and a higher rating than people have given it. Many of the models used for the map were perfect for the roles they were used for. The leveling system is unique, and encourages players to explore every area thoroughly for the orbs. Although the map has only one hero and some may argue that because of this the map is not very replayable, the two possible difficulties and the way the player can actually choose the spells he wants for his hero makes this arguement invalid. All the spells were well though out, with decent special effects and detailed tooltips. The grammar and spelling in dialogs wasn't perfect, but I know it would be hard to change the voice acting to match text revisions. The intro cinematic was very good and explained things thoroughly, which is sometimes hard to do. There was a large amount of optional quests to do, all with very nice rewards. However, I did have a problem with one quest. In the optional quest "The Golden Beast," the player must slay a Golden Scorpion. The battle was fun and I liked the reward, but when I picked up the head of the Scorpion, I noted that it sold for two hundred gold. When I brought the head to Jumoke, I got two bunches of Scarab Coins, which totaled ninety gold. Is this intentional? Also, I know you only have the whosyourdaddy anti-cheat implemented, but an anti keysersoze/leafittome/greedisgood is really easy to implement. Make a dummy player, or make sure one of your computer players has no way to get gold or lumber. If their gold or lumber is greater or equal to one, defeat the player. This is just a comment to your style, but I loved the music choice, and I also liked how bosses/minibosses showed up as heroes. I also loved the incredible preview image and the informative minimap. The custom UI and mouse pointer were awesome too. I have not completed the game yet, but I have not found any major bugs yet.
APproject, you have made an awesome map. Ra bless you.
5/5 from me.

Woah, thank you for your kind words, SeedinAethyr. I truly appreciate it. I am glad that you enjoyed it and it is the best reward for me. If there is at least one person like you, then I accomplished what I was seeking with making this map.

Concerning Golden Beast, yes, it is intentional. It is one of quests that would force you to do different decision than intended one. It says that you would get a better deal selling the head than returning it to Jumoke. So it would be wiser to sell and fail quest as the rewaqrd would be greater this way.

I may see what I can do about these anti-cheats, perhaps for the next update.

Thank you again for your positive review and the rating.

Hey APproject, I have gotten farther in Seth's Reign. I've beaten the last Artifact Keeper, but I had a small problem while fighting him that you may have intended, or maybe you didn't. You see, when I had gone into the area you fight him, I explored the area without activating the fight. Then, I saw Ohkrik walking through the desert, and then it sighted me. However, because the door was shut and there were walls all around me, Ohkrik could not attack me. I was feeling mischevious and didn't want to fairly fight a fourteen thousand health beast if I didn't have to. I just sat behind the wall and attacked it again and again. But then it burrowed underground. I waited about twenty seconds, and it did not reappear. I then decided to start the boss fight because it seemed clear (to me) that Ohkrik wouldn't come back up. Well, after like thirty seconds battling the Artifact Keeper, Ohkrik appeared right next to me. Yup, I was fighting two bosses at once. Of course I died. I know it is more realistic that way (I thought I could outwit the god, I payed the price), but still, I didn't like the situation. Maybe you could possibly fix it?
Also, I am having trouble in the Peakflame Room. I can light all four pillars, but no orb appears, as you said it would in a previous post. Maybe I'm a quarter second off or something. If this is the case, do you think I should upgrade my Unarmored stat for extra attack speed?
EDIT: Nevermind! I got it! I just need to stand next to one of the pillars, and attack the pillar farthest away first, then the two to the sides, then the one behind me. I did it!!!

Oh, that is an unfortunate situation. I may attempt to fix this for next update, yet I'm not sure when it will come out. And no, this shouldn't be happening.

Well done. I usually stand in the middle not minding attack speed, but you seem to put it towards advantage and it turned out well for you. Well played.

Hello APproject, a talk of strategy here. Later in the game, the player is presented with many choices with different rewards. Because I have not played the game twice yet, I have not seen the other side of these decisions. For example, in the tomb, Cheops makes an offer to you to find his medallion. Do you challenge him to a battle, or do you try to find his medallion? Another big decision was whether to pick up the Weeping Statue. Do you pick it up and become cursed forever, or do you leave it? Also, on an unrelated note, how many artifacts are availible before I enter the Ombos Shrine. I have three artifacts as of now, should I have more?

It would be best to look for his medallion, since both choices would open the gates and finding medallion would reward you with a decent movement speed boost item. But if I remember correctly, Cheops drops an orb or even two, can't recall, so it is up to you.

You should take these three statues even though you get cursed. Next thing you should worry about is how to get rid of the curse. There are at least 2 ways. First one might be acquiring a hidden potion found in that area that cast Dispell on you. Second way would be to die. Dying might result you in losing game, for that you must have been already acquired one of artifacts that is able to resurrect you every 60 seconds.

You missed one artifact, there is only one of five artifacts in Ombos.

I missed an artifact?! That means I'll have to explore the whole map over again! (I am a completist.) That Necklace of Soul Release isn't an artifact, is it? Because it seemed useless to me and I sold it.

Soul Release is actually a key for your missing artifact. And it lies within the last desert area where necklace and Ra's temple located are. So if you still want that artifact, load game where you had the necklace. To my mind, this artifact is the most difficult to obtain absent tips, yet there are players who obtained it.

Thanks for the hint APproject! Now I see where the artifact is! I'm lucky I had a save before I sold the Necklace that wasn't too far back from where I was. (I normally keep two saves for singleplayer RPGs, one just to keep my regular progress, and one for hard boss fights). I only had to get the Ra's Burststone and kill Anturek and Muhkh to get to the spot where I was. However, when fighting Muhkh again, I encountered a bug! When Muhkh burrows down into the ground, you see the crystal on his/her head and the dust flying about where it burrowed. (Off topic, I loved how it could burrow underground.) However, when it burrowed underground, my hero still took damage from some invisible enemy. I saw the white numbers and also heard the hits. I thought maybe I was taking damage from a sandstorm or something, but then this invisible enemy cast the goo splatter at me! (Fortunatly, it missed.) This proved that Muhkh was still following me! Did you forget to pause Muhkh or something when it burrows? However, I still saw the forbidden god burrowing around and once I caught it, the invisible enemy stopped attacking me. Also, I liked the traps in the Shrine Ombos. Some were pretty innovative, like the beetles. I really had to think about how to get rid of them. (Also, that Scarab Lord looks suspiciously like Quariji Deeplord from Arena of Apokua.)

Thanks APproject! You're super awesome!

I'm glad you found it. :) Hmm, never encountered this kind of bug, yet I'll take a look and see if there are any flaws in coding, thanks. Hehe, yeah, these beetles were rather annoying to myself as well. Yes, the same model have been used for it, but different texture. :) Thank you for your kind words, good luck with the rest of map.

I've decided to restart the game and play Seth's Reign on Advanced. I feel like I've made some bad mistakes in my current game and I also want to try out the Seth spells.
Even though I restarted, I'll probably finish the game faster because I know most of the secrets and how to kill the bosses. I also know what to spend my money on.

Okay, I've been playing for awhile now, and I'm stuck on Neopthoris. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. I remember on my first time I just kited him around for awhile and cast my spells when I got a chance. I remember that if I ran in a straight line I was just fast enough to avoid his dark lightning attack.
That does not seem to be the case in advanced mode. It seems nearly impossible to dodge his dark lightning, and I continue to die because of it. The battle pretty much goes like this:
I cast my two spells at him and then run away quickly, he casts dark lightning at me. 4/5 times it hits me, no matter what I'm doing. I'm not really sure what causes it to miss me, because I'm doing the same thing when it misses me and when it hits me. Running forewards, away from Neopthoris. I then get 131 damage from the lightning, I wait for the cooldown on my spells to reset (while running), he casts the dark lightning again and I get hit (still running), the cooldown on my spells resets, I cast them again on Neopthoris (and then start running), he casts dark lightning on me, I get hit. I don't know how I beat him the first time! Maybe I had higher movespeed because I put points into Unarmored, I don't know. Players ARE supposed to be able to outrun the lightning, right?
Thanks in advance.

I'm glad you gave it a chance. Well yeah, the thing is that he has more powerful version of that spell with larger area of effect. As you noticed, not all time it hits. What you must know about it is that his ability has casting time, if you have Chaos Orb, it is vital to hit him with orb during his casting time, orb interrupt him from any action applying his abilitiy's cooldown without finishing casting. Another thing, yet im not certain of this, you must run in a straight line with no turns to avoid the blow, meaning you will get farther from the center of casting area, just physics. You'll have to abuse game mechanics as much as possible.

ok at the 20st time i managed that horus and i survived till this Monster appeared. but eh.. wtf! the whole City is full of Monsters! they cant even move because there is no space! and ehh.. this big Monster is just invulnerable !! i just got 2 artefacts, the burststone and the Medaillon but.. ist just impossible to kill this Thing! it loses 200hp, then i have to flee because of his minions. after that ist fully regenerated.

btw: there is a notice that the Monster made from the jewels cant leave the shrine ombos, but i spawned it in the villige!

besides this chaotic and impossible village part! very very nice - i really enjoyed!

You have to obtain the Necklace of Soul Release in order to walk through water, I'll leave it for you to discover.

Whole village is crowded because I suppose you didn't try your best at killing as much creeps as possible. You may also face difficulties because you have only 2 artifacts meanwhile by this time you could be carrying all 5 and it might surely power you up. What I can suggest is just to find more artifacts, gear up and kill minions as much as you can before the Thing appears.

How did you manage to spawn it to the village? I might take a closer look at it. :O And thanks. :)

I don't like that there's no incentive whatsoever to fight minions, since they dont give any xp, and only have a very very very small chance of dropping 15 gold. It makes fighting minions boring since there's no motivation to do so. Also, things chase you forever, which is bad. I lured the first miniboss from the east tomb all the way back to the village, and used the village fighters to tank for me while i killed it with my spells. Also, the first miniboss spell is very very laggy, I suggest you replace the missile with something else, the power orb model isn't a very good one for missiles anyways, it's better as an attachment i think, and the very very high particle count creates massive lag when you spam them like you do in the first miniboss spell.

Then skip them if you can.

The motivation would be to slay them because they won't let you go any further. Also it has a drop of gold or orbs which becomes essential overtime. You must also explore environment to find orbs, if you gonna skip it, later it will be really hard to go on, not to mention item loot. For this reason I suppose you dragged miniboss to village because you were rather weak due to rush. It is the matter of seconds to deal with him if approached properly.

the first miniboss spell is very very laggy

Well, it doesn't lag for me at all, but I'll see what I can do about it.

But I agree on the minion problem, it is rather annoying at start, later it gets better. Thanks for playing.

As far as I can see in screenshots, this is one of the most impressive maps ever.. nice textures, models, landscapes, and beautiful egyptish theme which I truly love.

But... I can't play it actually :vw_sad: when I try to load the map the game crashes with a corrupted .mp3 file error. Is it fixed already? or is it just me? Hope I can get a fix soon because I REALLY want to play this map.

Terrific map, i love the Egyptian theme which is so different from all the other Rpgs here on Hive.

By the way, anyone mind giving me a hint as to the location of the ring of revival artifact? You don't need to tell me the exact location, just an idea, cause i have been searching everywhere for it, i even found the artifact on the water island but still no ring haha.

Great campaign!
