Hello guys

I am writing this thread because I know somebody will complain about the new ads on every resource/map page.

I realize the ad will degrade the user experience for new users who have not seen the ads yet.

However, these ads are good ads in the following ways:
- They don't slow down the site.
- They are static so they won't ever show anything we don't want to see.

I know that binverse may contain pirated content, but the platform itself is not illegal. Just like torrents aren't (shouldn't) be illegal.

The ads will benefit THW in the long run and will greatly increase the funds we have available. I am already considering a new server..

I hope you understand my points and will respect my decision.

Best ad´s i´ve ever seen, they instantly caught my attention! I think as long as they serve their purpose it should be fine.

Will there be more ad´s in the future, Ralle ?

[edit]
Just found out that we can tell firefox to block those ad-images.

I agree with Trax. It's not about the ad itself, but the placement.
It's really awkward placement, especially if you scroll down too fast. You might see "Download Now!" And just click. Note that the Binverse ad background is the same as the Hive's alternate brown color, to boot.

These ads are really annoying....

Yes they may benefit hive in the long run, but why have them so huge and in the dumbest places possible.... I am going to go crazy the longer I have to stare at it.

I understand how you need money for the site... but isn't there other way to do it?

I don't mean to sound like I am complaining, but the first thing I see when I login is this.

The position of them is meant to be this way. I believe the ads are meant to cheat you to click them. I know this sucks, but you will get used to it.

I do and am glad you are trying to secure more funds for the hive, as that means more good stuff for all of us the user base. I will say though that the new placement is a bit annoying.

May I ask, Ralle, about how much money do these new ads rope in, or about how much they are predicted to bring in?

I'm perfectly fine with them (the site does need funding), but it may confuse some users as some have flashy buttons with text like "Download" or "Click Here" right next to the good link, and believe me, people will not be amused if they get some creepy popup about phallus shaped marshmallows or some malware instead of the model they were trying to download.

I've only seen the one for "Binverse" that said "POPULAR DOWNLOAD!" or something like that, and it looked really questionable. It certainly left me doubting the reputability of the product being advertised, and if I weren't already familiar with THW, it wouldn't have left a good impression.

I'm seeing a damn advertise on every resource page, and it looks like this:
binverse.png

It seriosly pisses me off, because I don't want to see it on every damn corner I surf.

They are supposed to be located like that. They wouldn't give Ralle money if he had hidden it in the corner. I don't mind them at all.
It's great to hear that you're getting more money ^^

Hmmm, I knew we'll get some more advertisements after you said you want to get a new server...
Well, thats better than all that crap you can't predict where it goes to: to a pornsite or to a virus crawling phising website. Well of course they're too big I think, but oh well, that site is at least quite useful...

Oh, and is that temporary until you gat the new server or planed to be permament at least for now?

Can we perhaps increase the visibility of our own resource download buttons so people won't be clicking the ads all the time?

Oh, also:

[10-16-45] Xarwin: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1865

And:

[10-16-57] Zombie.: Simply disabling the pictures from that site works.
[10-17-13] Zombie.: Right click-> Block pictures from www.gayassspamsite.com.
[10-17-14] Zombie.: Done.

Yay, I sabotaged capitalism again.

well i also noticed them, but did not really wonder...
i do not think they are that annoying... i mean.. they are, but there are a lot more annoying ads than the ones under the download resource button.. (not of this site though)
they are just placed like: "hopefully someone accidentally clicks on this piece of garbage"

some ads make noises when you go with the cursor over them... THATS annoying.

but hey.. i understand your reasons and its no big deal, really.
we should all just live with it.

The position of the ads is meant to be like that. I am sorry but that's a sad fact. That was their wish.

What do you suggest to highlight ours a bit more?

Their placement is annoying because it may cause noobs to click them thinking its somehow connected to the resource, or you may click it on accident. Can you at least move them someplace else, like the side or top of the resource page (within reason - the resource image should be the first thing you see on any resource page)?

The position of the ads is meant to be like that. I am sorry but that's a sad fact. That was their wish.

Its YOUR website, YOU should be able to choose where to place them - and YOUR letting them advertise on YOUR website so its in their benefit.

Well you could always give the option to hide them like:

Cheating Death Pharmaceuticals, when life gives you lemons, use those lemons to treat cancer.

There, big @$$ ad yet it takes up minimum space

But don't have it automatically on or on for people who aren't actually members of the site. That way both new people to the site and those who haven't joined the site still see them (until they join and hide the ads or learn how to hide the ads) and other people won't accidentally click them yet can still view them if they want to.

Does cash really justify everything?

I understand how you could make a lot of money by spamming ads on every Resource page, but you must see the annoyance this is bound to cause. I mean can't you just put it somewhere else on the screen where it would still be visible but less of a pain?

It does in this case - more money from ads = more money for ralle = we get a new server sooner

I'm sure you've experienced hiccups, have you not?

I am sure some of you might be asking why does this site need to generate money. Well incase you do not realise, servers are not machines run on magic, they run on money.

There is the electricity, which costs per culonm(C) used. There is the cost of the ISP providing the internet to the server (I am sure you realise by the download speeds that this site uses a decent connection). There is then the cost of software, VB is not free. Finally there is the cost of the actual server hardware itself, which can be worked out into a daily maintenence expense (cost of hardware($)/working life of hardware(days)).

All this means that there has to be some form of counter stream of revenu to push against the daily expenses. Ralle being a student can not particually afford to personally run the server for free, thus he needs to get a conteractive stream of suplimentary revenue from the site itself to help cover the expenses.

The adds are one of the main sources of revenu for this site, and they probably nowhere near cover the actual costs behind the server itself. Thus why the recent increase in advertising.

The fact remains that the adds could be removed completly if enough people were donating per month however that is not the case.

Just be lucky this is not a commercial site, the adds would be 100 times worse (look at devient art).

I know it is MY WEBSITE. But it is either what we have now, or no ads with that company.

Cash justifies the position of these ads.

I know the ads may cheat people to click on the wrong link. But if these ads are kept. There will not be any significant financial problems in a long time.

This month is only a test month, so you may see the ads disappear after a month, but I hope not.

The new ads are good Ralle.

I don't mind them and I can't see why people would be complaining about them like totally.

As Joe-Black 5 stated hive is a free site, Ralle could make you pay to be able to download but he doesn't. So, therefore give him some slack and take the ads as a good thing not a bad thing, and plus if people click these new ads maybe we could upgrade the site even more and be able have more cool features for you.

Because as far as I see, everything Ralle does is for you (The Hive community) and for the greater good of the site.

One could say that if you do not like the ads, then you should donate and we wouldn't need the ads. Because the only reasons we have ads on Hive is so that Ralle can earn some extra money towards the site and make better features for you. So, if everyone who is complaining about them donated then in the long run we wouldn't even need to have ads in the first place.

Keep up the good work and nice ads Ralle,
Lag_Reviews!

PS:
If you are never going to click the ads then there are many addons in firefox we you can use to hide the ads on any website forever.

So many people have this "No Ads No Site" ideology, and defend it so valiantly, when they really have no idea about any of it.

The placement of all the ads on the site SUCK. Especially the leader board on the bottom, that is a waste of CPU cycles. This new ad should be text.

You shouldn't show ads for regular users. They get adjusted to your site, never create profit for your advertisers, and thus lower the over-all quality of your site from the viewpoint of advertisers, and many will stop advertising. Alternatively, a faster site for regular users may lead to greater content. Impression-logic doesn't work.

You don't get money for views. You get money for people spending money.

And that is??? There is no leader board at the bottom, unless you are refering to the "Similar Threads" board.

Advertisers do not want new people to see adds only, they want everyone to see them all the time. Why else does coke keep advertising the same drink all the time despite everyone in the world knowing about it? Why else do D2 spamm bots keep flooding your games with the same messages? I would like to remind you about Devientart which has adverts even if you are a member (paying members dont) and that is a suscessful company itself.

Other advertising companies are being considered, as the new adds point out however not all of them are willing to advertise on sites like this.

As that leaderboard on the bottom of the site is only making you $10/mo, why not delete it?
What leaderboard? You mean the banner add?

PS; Not that I want to advertise rival fascists, but TheHelper scams local businesses into paying for their server. So can you.
Before even making a statment like that, did you bother compairing usage statistics between the sites? THW has near full uptime with only a few minutes a day down and the occasional power problem for a few hours. Additionally right now as this message is typed there are 268 members and 937 guests using the server. Yes that idea might work for sites like WC3C but they are down many months of the year and do not allow nonmembers to easilly download some stuff due to having to restrict bandwidth.
