Starcraft - No LAN Support!

All of the new multi-player games that support LAN have a system so that if you have the same game on two computers you cannot lan togther. ther fore you will still have to buy two copies. PLENTY of people have only 1 internet connection, and therefore cannot play lan with two computers in the same house, like me and my brother, even if we boush two copies, which we will.

And what would solve this exactly if you don't have access to broadband?
If you don't have any half-decent internet access these days... You shouldn't be buying SC2. Really.

This didn't answer the question at all.
Games are direct connections, so if you play a BNet game locally you aren't using up your bandwidth...

For 2 hours of gaming, no one will pay 50 €.
Then don't only play a game for 2 hours.

You could use internet then.

Wrong! We were supposed to compare certain news channels to each other and determine if they had a liberal or conservative bias. Not sure how I could do that online unless I just read other people's opinions.

Remind me why you have a good computer and yet too bad of an internet to send a very small amount of information to a fast server.

My dad has no internet, yet he has a very fast computer. He's also a huge fan of Starcraft. He played Warcraft 3 a few times, got bored, and went back to playing Starcraft.

We (me and my brother) have to remain connected to B.net to play SC2 with each other (we are 3-5 feet apart) even if we both purchased the game? I'm going to buy it anyway, because there is no way i could not. but blizzard has taken most of the fun out of the game, which has greatly reduced my faith in Blizzard.
You don't. You can disconnect from BNet as soon as you both are in the lobby.

OH SHIT I JUST DISCOVERED SOMETHING!!! HE SAID "Support" not is not included. So that means that Lan will not be patched often similar to the World Editor hardly being updated. So it'll probably have Lan but just not being patched. That means that only when its fatally bugged, it will be patched but it probably means that Lan wont be patched often. After all, Blizzard wouldn't betray its fans would it? Dont let it start like another L4D 2 boycotter topic.

Keep in mind connections to people on a LAN will be through a LAN even if you're technically on BNet, and thus your internet can easily support it.
I have not seen one reliable source confirming this. In fact, I've only seen blue posts saying there will be no LAN at ALL. That implies all networking will go over the internet and handled on battle.net 2.0, and NOT over a local network. So basically, even "good" connections will fail epicly when 8 people try to play a game on 1 connection. It's really stupid of blizzard.

Think of it: if there WOULD actually be LAN support, and the only thing you would need to do before being able to go on LAN is authenticating on battle.net, then people will STILL be making hacks to bypass the authentication process and directly go on LAN. So blizzard just skipped LAN as a whole. The implications? Unless you got a ridiculous fast connection (like some lucky asses in scandinavia) there's no way 8 people are going to be able to share the same connection. Network optimization only goes *this* far.

Quite frankly, I support the idea of having to buy a copy per seat.
I don't. Especially for people who play it once in a blue moon. They won't buy it anyway. To give another example: is there anyone who bought multiple copies of windows XP for home usage because you technically can only use one copy per computer? They're not actually gaining any people this way, they're only gaining more pirates.

Then LAN party other games if you won't buy every seat. Again, I feel little sympathy for those that are already pushing or breaking a very reasonable contract.
Man, seriously. If we're only going to play games when EVERYONE owns a legal copy, lan games are dead. It's stupid. Nobody does it. All that's going to happen is that people play SC1 on lans and will ignore SC2 completely. -1 for blizzard.

If you don't have any half-decent internet access these days... You shouldn't be buying SC2. Really.
Wow, what a great marketing strategy. What's next? If you don't have a octo-core with 16 gigabytes of RAM and a terrabyte drive, don't bother buying SC2? If they're going to try making the game as *lightweight* as possible, maybe they shouldn't be ignorant of internet connections.

I agree with all of you points, execpt about not owning 1 copy per seat... i think that that it is reasonable to have to buy the game, blizzard is not catering to 'play one in a blue moon' people, they are looking for people who regularly play and purchase their games... its extremely dumb of blizzard to drop some of their loyal customers; The LAN gamers, and alot of others who will be dissapointed to see Blizzard become just like so many big companies who are more interested in a buck than in reliable customers... oh well...

I highly doubt that they will make hosting no longer peer to peer. If they do, then I will definitely be opposed to the change.

No, you'd have to host a game on battle.net and join it from another computer.

Seeing as most of hosting (at least in Battlenet 1) happens peer to peer and thus on a LAN if you share a network, it is lightweight.

$50 per seat, what ever, fine, much of everyone is going to get around to buying the game anyway.

But, then there's the other two campaigns/expansions. Unless you wait three years for the last one to be released and get the fully-featured multiplayer then, everyone at the LAN party has to put down at least $100, each, for it to even be possible.

It really annoys me when I just want to play a quick LAN game with my little brother, once, and the game tells me "piss off, cheapskate."

In under a second?

EDIT: Anyway, not the point of the thread.

okay im REALLY going to need to download a game in under a second because otherwise i'll die or something?

The reason i would download online is so that it won't burden the other players from waiting for me.
thats the point.

Anyway..

LAN or not, i doubt it will actually prevent you guys from playing.

Yes, true, but what if you have a horrible connection? or if only 1 person can use the internet at a time? then SCII will be single-player only for people like me... and others.

This is my problem: My house has 5+ computers that can play Starcraft AND Warcraft 3, but only 1 internet, and I have 4 siblings, 3 of which like to play multiplayer with me/eachother, so we have to use LAN or else only one person can play at a time. Other games, like Dawn of War, Tib. Wars, Company of Heroes, and others, have fallen by the wayside because we cannot play agenst eachother, even though they (SC and WC3) are like 4-10 years old and have(by comparison) crumby graphics, crude animations, and outdated gameplay.
None of that maters when you can only play agenst bots.

AND before you tell me to go and play online with friends, keep mind that most of the time you or your friends want to play, the other party will be unable to play, due to differing timeframes.

AND if I have a bunch of friends come over to my house, and we try to all do a match together, we can't, because only one person can be on at a time.
Also, I cannot imagine why ANYONE with a life would have more then one internet, as that would only be useful if you had a LAN-ish party every other day!

I supose this is not of much consern to those of us who have no friends we meet face-to-face with:)cry:), but it is a BIG consern for me, and anyone else who has a number of friends who do not have decent internet or even have a computer.

...I think I am done ranting now.

...Sorry for leting my mouth run...

...I hope I can play Starcraft II WITH my family, rather then simply having them look over my shoulder...

...I also hope I don't have to spend $300-$400+ just so I can play the game for more then 3 months...

...I'm alredy broke...

Starcraft and Warcraft 3 have outdated gameplay? Keep telling yourself that... Oh, and graphics are overrated.

Anyhow, why do you not have the capacity to send a few kb back and forth from multiple computers at the same time?

IMO any game that touts it's gaphics as "they will knock your ******* socks off!" gets -1 points in my book. although I DID exagerate about the "outated gamplay", but that's beside the point, as StarCraft and Warcraft 3 are the ONLY games I play consistantly. This coming from a guy who has over 30 games (no exageration).
And I CAN send "a few kb back and forth from multiple computers at the same time"... But ONLY through the LAN that my computers are all hooked up to. If there is another way, nether me, my brother, or father know it. Or my Dad's "computer wiz" friend knows, for that matter. If you could tell me how to do this through Battle.net or somthing similar, I'd... I don't know... thank you alot and +5 rep you?

Once you have joined a game on battle.net, you can disconnect from the internet and still have people on your LAN stay in the game (the host should stay on until the game starts though, as they need to be on for the game to show up on the game list).

but all players have to be connected at one time correct? so people with 1 internet cannot connect to a LAN :(
(which sucks)
or people without internet cannot play on LAN at all!
