In the Oakwood Forest ORPG players will experience many different landscapes.
Players can select between 3 starting area's that will have their own questlines that lead into different places.

Here you can see the terrain.

The pictures you see range from 1.5 years ago till now. The most recent pictures are at the bottom.

all this need is simplicity
(+) your trying make advance terrian not just game terrian
(- )Messiness

Yep true,
That's why I reterrained some parts of the terrain. Per example that undead area. The screenshots that are still here are the places I didn't change.

You just spam bushes EVERYWHERE. :(

I don't just mindless spam bushes lol. I just like this extra amount of shrubs, it looks better I think. I want the terrain to look like a terrain in the terrainers section would look like. So a playable "terrain" instead of just something that fits "a game" much more.

I like it, But can you add more Screenshots? I whana see what it looks like. :D
Btw +rep for the nice Terrain!

Yeah could work on some extra screenshots if I had more terrain. Just came back from vacation so I will start working on it again. I'm currenlty making the Undead/Dark Elf starting area and finishing the human/elf/dwarf starting area.

Thanks for the rep:D

The terrain is great 5/5, but can you add some normal in-game pictures to where we can judge what we see in the game.

3 small pictures of me playing 3 different classes. Forgot to equip items in the test and 2 of the 3 heroes didn't have the special bar (the sage (jaina model) did). And to still be able to reveal things later on I decided to hide the minimap and hide the spells.
Anyways a little gameplay preview.

(the 5th one is a pretty new one. Currently working on that area so if you look around it might look a bit empty:p)

Gee...

kk critizim, hm...

1st. Camera ruins the gameplay, quick actions and pvp (in case if theres any..) are completely waste of time, because you have difficulties to react and aim your spells. I havent tested your camera, but all other 3rd cameras fail, so why not this one too.
2nd. I dunno how to say this, but you are trying to make "too good" terrains. Expecially the library/cave one. Its a cool idea and so on, but its just too messy and you can see "the randomness".
3nd. Well I dont know much about your project, but I havent seen anything special yet... Its "just another (O)RPG" for me.

Well pvp isnt supposed to be easy. And if all players have the same difficulties then it's balanced anyway. And about the "too good" terrains. I tried to make battle area's and believe it or not nothing I did was random I positioned everything myself and angled it how I wanted. Guess I succeeded in making it look like a real area where a battle is going on because war aint about placing barricades in a nice line to look fancy. The 3rd thing well, that's an opinion much people have. All I can say is that you should see it when it's done.;-)

I recommend that you remove that Inquisitor icon you've taken from ToB, you've used it without a permit for the redeemer.

Oh yeah good point. I implemented it to try it out but forgot to ask permission for it. I first wanted to see if I really needed it and because of the fact there aren't many betters I think I do. So writing erwtenpeller a pm now.

I gotta say that you've done some really nice playable terrain over there, IMO. Hope it's not taking too much memory, though.

The 3rd person camera.. well, I hope you're not going for the easiest way there, as the majority does. It's possible to make a really nice one with i.e. smooth movements. Oh, and a self-adjusting one depending on the environment would be more or less important too, to prevent the loss of proper sight.. or at least make it manually adjustable with the arrow keys, something like that ;)

Camerasystem works like this:
Left/Right changes the rotation. Up and Down zoom in and out, mouse-scroll change the angle. It isn't super smooth but I don't really think that's needed yet. I'd prefer to first work on other things.

I got some time again and started to terrain again. The plan is to first finish the terrain now before I do anything else.

Here's a little sneakpeak from what I've made yesterday. (Oh and I got a new screen, so the screenshots are bigger now^^)

Woah, looks super cool man, hope there's room to move in there :p

Haha, yeah ofc there is. However in some area's the tree's are sometimes blocking view a bit. But that's why we're also getting a tree fading system so nearby tree's become transparant.

1st I like the terrain but randomness, and the shrubs almost looks like bushes.
2nd I am not a 3rd person camera guy and it ruins the gameplay.
3rd Nice Ideas. But many things should be fixed.
4th The game will be enhanced with custom UI Skins (Final Touch).

OMG where have you found that trees?

I don't know which tree's you're talking about but if you mean the bushy lookalike tree's I used in per example the swamp area or the gryphonwing city, then I'd advice you to check out wc3.net because I got them from one of the last pages of the doodad section there. They're pretty old (made in 2005 or something) but I really like them.

Great screenshots, really looks like some high-budget MMORPG. Some suggestions:
-If you use 3rd Person Camera, use this: http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/...-143479/?prev=search=rpg%20battle&d=list&r=20
-If you're not using any cameras, then don't lock camera to a Hero. That makes it... boring.
-I didn't see that you are putting some special battle system. Good. Battle systems often ruin WC3's maps. Talk about Dark Invasion 2. Everything is perfect, except battle system.

All the answers on your questions can be found here:

All that bothers atm is that we don't have a tree-fading system. But for that we need a friendly modeler willing to do 3 small model edits with tree models, but we can't find one.

This looks very interesting. I too hope that the 3rd person camera doesn't ruin your hard work and dedication.

In my honest opinion, avoiding 3rd person on your map might just be the best decision you can make. 1) People don't enjoy it as much as what they're used to and 2) you're only getting one side of the terrain in what should be an entirely immersed ORPG. I guarantee that you will run into problems with that sort of terrain blocking camera views from certain angles.

Go with the default. Please.

You are talking nonsense. The 3d camera is actually the camera that has the better views possible. This way we can add caves/dungeons/big trees without worrying of blockin the whole view.

Well to say the least; your terrain is quite enjoyable from the looks, specially for a playable game.
Please do keep in mind you don't try to overcrowd things (with the wheats for example in one of your later posts) people might find it more an obstruction of their gameplay sight rather than having the optimal viewing pleasure.

Apart from those and a couple of real minors, it looks good, and specially not let yourself be haunted away by people whom say your terrain is not well made for A playable game, just make sure you potion things down here and there.

About the 3rd person camera, if you can make a good camera system for it, in such way it doesn't form an obstacle in ones gameplay, then I'd say go for it!
All thoroughly given criticism is welcomed for someone that has a map in progress. but
In the end it remains your map, and from the looks of it, your on a righteous path of creating some unique and entertaining.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the critism and compliments.
I can understand some people's critism about camera systems but there's nothing to worry about in this game. We got a pretty nice camera system that won't ruine anyone's gameplay.
I'd suggest you should take a look at www.youtube.com/oakwoodforestrpg. You can see the gameplay camera in there. The only thing we currently need is a tree fading system, but appart from that I don't think there are any bad things about this system.

You're definently getting it right with your goal of creating terrain that looks like it's "in a game." The terrain is definently something I would expect to see in any console or computer game I'm playing.

As long as you get it down and done as to not detract from the gameplay than you're doing a good job. As for cameras, that there is a very tricky business. Good camera systems are far and few between. They immerse your players better and create depth to the world, but they're also restricting and can even require new game controls to work properly. Hopefully you keep this in mind when implementing a camera.

Good luck! Those minor model edits that you require, tell me what they are via private message and I'll see if I can't give it a try. I'm not exactly a model maker, but minor edits to models isn't out of my realm.

Screenshots #13 and #23:

The floor looks dull, it is just 1 tile in difrent angles which looks funny and strange.

I suggest getting some better texture for that tile, a tile which actualy can fit nicely in any angle.

Other than that all looks good.

Oh well. It looks much better ingame. Also changed the fog of that are a bit and the water colour.
