Blizzard Accidentally Releases Debug Symbols, Maps, and Exclusive Content in Warcraft 3 Update

In a surprising turn of events, Blizzard Entertainment has made headlines again, following the release of version 2.0.1 for their classic game, Warcraft 3. While fans were already dissecting the changes introduced in the update, today’s follow-up has generated even more buzz—and not for the reasons Blizzard intended.

As part of their recent activity surrounding the update, Blizzard inadvertently released an archive containing sensitive and previously unreleased content. Among the files were debug symbols, which make reverse engineering the game significantly easier for developers and modders alike. Debug symbols are a critical part of software development, containing detailed metadata that allows for the deconstruction of a program's internal workings—something typically guarded closely by companies to prevent unauthorized modifications or security breaches.

The archive also included several maps, some of which feature original SD+ models that had never been seen before. These models, notable for their historical significance and high fidelity, are not the AI-upscaled variants Blizzard has offered in recent years but are instead true original assets. This discovery has excited the Warcraft 3 modding community, which has long sought authentic and unaltered content from the game’s earlier days.

Additionally, the release contained a surprising number of small executable utility programs. The purpose of these utilities is still being explored by users, but they appear to serve a variety of niche development and debugging functions.

Blizzard has yet to comment publicly on the incident, and it remains unclear whether the release was a simple oversight or a more complex error in their update process. However, the company has acted swiftly to address the issue. In a follow-up update, Blizzard has removed the leaked content from distribution. Despite this, Pandora's box has already been opened, as the files have been widely shared among the community.

While the release may have been accidental, it has reignited interest in Warcraft 3, demonstrating the enduring passion of its community. However, Blizzard will likely need to address the implications of the leaked debug symbols and the potential for misuse in the coming days.

Stay tuned as the story develops.

Blizzard said:

Build: 22474
December 17, 2024

These updates aim to improve the overall gameplay experience by addressing various bugs and enhancing features.

  • Ranked Play: Players will now lose more XP when they lose.
  • Custom Hotkey Screen: Updated to allow customization of item slots and F keys.

  • TFT Theme: Updated to include snow on the frames.
  • Versus Setup Screen: Rank now shows against all races (previously only showed rank against its own race).
  • Old Terrain: Moved to the Addon Sub folder with an option to use old Reforged Terrain.
  • Chat System: Added an option to hide game system messages in chat. Lobby chat will now clear after exiting.
  • New Skins: Added three new skins (Jaina, Ghostly Antonidas, Ghostly Keeper of the Grove).
  • VFX Addon: Reinforced Defenses and Spiked Barricades moved to Building Addon.
  • Match History: Added date played.

I noticed there is now a 'DevOnly' folder in the maps folder with developer test maps in it. Curious :D
Inside the "DevOnly" folder, there's a subfolder containing an unfinished prototype map made by a certain "Kam" (I wonder where I heard this name before...).

Everyone and their grandma seem to be remaking WC1 these days

This patch includes a Model Previewer program written in C++ and probably DearImGui, which can accurately render Reforged models including PopcornFX and other art systems that do not preview on Retera Model Studio because they are proprietary.

This program also is likely to be better than Hive Sanity Tester in some cases, because it accurately reports what is wrong with a custom model file using the game's own code.

I got the above error when using the model from here: World Editor only shows the model's shadow

This is way more useful than the World Editor that doesn't tell you anything when the model won't load!

are these up on the site yet?

I have no idea the Hive policy on this but until they take it down, I put preview.exe in the Tools section just now.

Is there a way to preview these new models? https://www.hiveworkshop.com/attachments/wc3scrnshot_121824_210048_000-png.502185/

Thanks! I'm excited to see what other tools were in there but this one is the one I want the most

I don't see how yet, because I don't know how to use "Allow Local Files" and/or custom textures on preview.exe yet. However, we can obviously preview them on Retera Model Studio if we extract them from their source map:

Do you think this model is old (a prototype) or made now for a future update?

I think it is neither one. It is probably an internal tool for testing, which was never intended to be released. That's the sad reality of this stuff. They have a great model viewer like that, but aren't interested in providing it to you.

Then, it leaked out on accident, probably. That's my best guess.

Are there only footman
Yeah and a couple of buildings or something. These are in that map, there isn't much more than what you might have seen in a screenshot that I had found so far. However, someone on the Warcraft III Previewer thread figured out how to load the textures on custom models! (Duh, we just needed to use local files, and I had done so incorrect!)

Aaaaand they just broke the BlzFrameSetScale native when used with default UI frames like command buttons

this crashes the game for example:
JASS:
call BlzFrameSetScale(BlzGetFrameByName("CommandButton_0", 0), 1)

And since the BlzFrameSetSize native was already not working they officially killed any custom ui that manipulates the default UI. Great f*cking job Blizzard! Well Done! F*ck sake!!!!

I believe the model is old and not intended to be featured. I recognized that orc model, it's been posted before in artstation from 2020. The image features heroes of the storm models, but the grunt is unmistakablely the same.

I think these were likely the two only test models made before the art direction changed and I assume the only classic hd models to exist 😭

While looking at the leaked actual playable maps... they are a joke. Their triggering skills haven't improved since 2002. So many leaks, ugly GUI, tons of redundant triggers. Yeaaaaaah placeholder/demo maybeeeeee but they are also using hive resources.
It's pretty normal for singleplayer (campaign style) maps to have leaks tbh.
Both from Blizzard back in 2002 and from map makers in 2024. Small leaks are completely fine imo

So there was a point of time when WC3 with more polygons was trully WC3 with more polygons and not generic mobile game appeal, like Reforged ended being.

MBA's where a mistake. rejecting a goofy and lively style to a more "realistic generic" to pander to a sector of people who don't even play RTS is the most business school graduated idea ever.

And Christmas came early for Stephan K, new footman design :xxd:

No, if u ever played HOTS u will notice that those models are in HOTS (Alterac Pass map).
Honestly, I would have loved if they'd gone with the art style of the Alterac Pass map from HotS. My friend and I always postulated if that map was a trial version of a Warcraft rework at the time.

Just look at these guys:

Do the debugging symbols mean that we finally can get stack traces for crashes?
This would be really helpful to debug maps.
kind of, but not really
anyone running off bnet will be running off the obfuscated version and that will have wrong offsets for everything, besides as soon as they release a new patch it will be even more outdated
you can debug crashes by running your map with the unobfuscated client tho

If i remember correctly, these were projected by Samwise Didier thats why they have this "Warcraft feeling" in them. Reforged well, different company different artstyle :(
