EDIT: APRIL FOOLS JOKE 2017 :)

Hey guys,

Today we're announcing something that might make some of you a little angry, but know that we're doing this to ensure a bright future for the site.
As you may know, we are working hard to improve our presence on various social networks and in a step in this direction we are introducing a new functionality on the site. We are restricting the ability to download maps/resources until we have confirmed that you have either liked us on Facebook, followed us on Twitter or subscribed to us on YouTube. It may be a bit drastic, but we believe it will be an effective way to drastically increase our social media popularity.

If you have done any of the above listed things, please post in this thread and we will add you to a special user group that will restore your ability to download. Please bare with us.

Facebook - Twitter - YouTube

Hmm, i don't know if this is the right way to go. Sure, we need some more presence, but a restriction to the download feature can massively cut down the overall amount of downloads mapmaker will and can receive.

And a measure like this can feel somehow cheap. I could understand that you could require to be registered to the hive, but to subscribe to it to use its functions? Normally its the other way around. That you want to subscribe because you like the community and functionality.
Anyway, i subscribed over facebook. I already support this community because i want to, not because i need to. Now i believe it is needed to upload maps to epicwar while having it on hive. The second because of the valuable feedback and the first because we need to for mass appeal.

Edit: don't take this for an offense, it isn't , i just want to point what possible consequences and feelings this can evoke

Can't even describe how weird this stuff is. Even though, I liked your Facebook page, subscribed on YouTube (W3 modding my channel) and I'm already following you on Twitter. Aside from this, ahem... Why?! I mean, why doing this? On the contrary, people that do not have an account on Hive but still use the site to check out fresh things regarding Warcraft 3 modding, will stop visiting Hive if they won't be able to download anymore. In some cases, it is a good idea because they will be "forced" to create an account so Hive will have more users. Still, I don't think it is a good idea, and I'm sure that more than 60% of the users here think the same.
P.S. Do not launch an "assault" on me just because I pointed out my opinion.

@Mister_Haudrauf Well no, we get that sometimes there's jokes. It's Hive, not a business afterall.

But to answer your question, yes, we felt that this was necessary. We've taken some tips from articles on how to grow your social media sites and we felt that this is a small price to pay to reach our objective. We understand that there are consequences and we may alienate a small chunk of the userbase.

All I can say that it can sting for some of you right now, but in the long run, we think it'll be worth it since it would bring a lot more members to the site when our social media expands.

I completely stand behind this ^

And that comes from someone who liked the Hive's page as soon as I found out it exists. And that's (just as Lord_Earthfire said) because I wanted to. If the goal is to get more people to like us on social media, perhaps we should incentivize it, instead of "forcing" people to like us in order to access our resources. What do I mean with incentivizing people to like us?

-Reputation bonus for liking the page
-Awards
-Special forum/chat icon created for social media fans
-Other

That's how people should be encouraged to like us. Not via restrictions.
Restrictions will surely lead to decrease of access and eventually loss of downloads of our resources, mark my words. By being a community of such an old game there are already plenty of restrictions on the way of both modders and players - nowadays it's difficult to even host a game without someone being on the wrong patch, using different software (hamatchi/garena/other), and other obstacles along the way. And then more restrictions on top of that? I love the Hive a lot, but this will do more damage than it will help us.

I have subscribed to Hive's YouTube and liked Hive's Facebook looong ago and that won't change, but I am seriously against this new change. That's my 2 cents on it.

Peace.

EDIT: I wanted to also give League of Legends and World of Warcraft as perfect examples for the correct way to approach this issue:
-League of Legends rewarded you with a Skin for a specific hero if you like/subscribe to them.
-World of Warcraft also gave you something cosmetic as a reward, I really don't remember the specifics.

They didn't stop you from playing their games if you didn't like them on social media.
Point is, in my opinion, that people should be rewarded for liking social media and not punished for not doing so.

Obvious promotion of pro-left communities. I am seriously against this new change.

Just want to share my opinion on this. I don't think forcing members is the way to go, Ralle. Anyone can simply just log out, download what they need to, and then log back in. And if you're considering to even go as far as restricting download access for Guests, that's going too far in my opinion and will only hurt the Hive in the end.

If you want to grow Hive's social media platforms, you should run some ads and promotions, etc. Just my two cents.

as a currently retired wc3 map maker, I only download models to scan them, look at them, see flaws, then tell their creator what I think in the model section where their uploaded to explain flaws, bugs, or solutions.

I galaxy edit sc2 now, I don't have a lot of time to deal with such ''restrictions'' perhaps I can be put on a different non restricted list somewhere? for old times sake? My old bones ache?

I've brought a lot of my real life friends to this site. so im not sure if that counts or not.

Ralle, who on earth insisted this idea? The community manager? Hive was always a site where anyone around internet could download resources without having to login or do some other crap. This is disappointing.

There are ways to gain popularity and this is not one of them.
Exactly! This is forced way to get promotion on other communities. But ultimately they're just shooting themselves in the foot.
