blightn1, I cant help but thinking you were ripped off a bit. Core2Duo's are starting to be too slow for modern games, especially GTA4 which needs 4 - 8 cores to run well.
The Nvidia BFG 280 OCX is also not the strongest card, nor the best value for money.
Also I take it you are using 64 bit vista, or else that 9 GB of RAM will be capped at 4 GB.

Still not a bad PC, but dual cores should start to fade, especially since the new I7 is out. Should run all modern games but GTA4 playably.

Currently the best possiable PC that money can buy is 4+ GB DDR3 ram, 2* Ati 4870 2X (or what ever that monster for a card is) in crosfire mode, an intel core I7 and ofcourse 1-2 1 TB HDD for storage and bluray drive.

Ofcourse that rig costs like 2000-3000£ which is like 3000-4000$ so it aint cheap, but that can get graphics so high, that you would make the 360/PS3 look last gen, as it would have 4 GB of graphic ram and 4 GB+ of normal RAM. Logically it only works with 64 BIT os as otherwise there would be a problem with RAM allocation.

Currently, nvidia is behind, as they have not moved on to gdr5 ram or what ever ATI is using and are still on 3. They also are at the 55 nm stage still while ati is at the 40 nm. However it is a matter of time before they release a card that makes even the ATI cards pale with their 2 GB of ram and 1000+ shaders supporting DX10.1.

The GX295 is out and wins agains the Radeon 4870 X2 in a number of benchmarks. The Radeon 4800's are still great cards, but nVidia has re-asserted itself in the market with this new card.

Bout time someone revived this thing.

I've got my 4 Gb of RAM back in.

I dropped down to 3 Gb some time ago due to a freezing issue, but it turns out it wasn't related and only got around to putting it back in recently.

Windows XP only picks up 3.25 GB but having the extra channel (It's dual channel of course), makes all the difference.

I've upgraded as well.

Feanor, the audio workstation has 8GB of RAM now, and Finwe the laptop has a cardbus Creative Soundblaster X-Fi.

It's actually mostly similar to last time, just with about 7GB more RAM.

Finwe - Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop
- 15.4" screen
- Intel Core 2 Duo @ 1.6GHz
- 4GB DDR2 RAM @ 667MHz
- GeForce 8600GT 512MB graphics (just waiting for it to fail any day now)
- 160GB 5400RPM SATA HDD
- Cheap integrated audio
- 89W/Hr battery cell (Hooray for 5-6 hours of battery life with wireless active)
- Windows XP Home 32-bit

Feanor - Audio Workstation
Custom built by me
- Antec Sonata 3 case with a 500W Earthwatts PSU
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz
- 6GB DDR2 RAM @ 800MHz
- Gigabyte G33M-DS2R motherboard
- Intel G33 integrated video
- 2x320GB Western Digital 7200RPM SATA HDDs (RAID 1)
- 2x250GB Maxtor 7200RPM SATA HDDs
- Soundblaster Audigy 2 sound
- Echo Audiofire 4 sound
- Windows XP Pro 64-bit

That's about it.

My battery is getting horrible now. Even if I have the brightness all the way down and set on "Power Saver" mode it still can only last for about 30 mins. :<

Rip off that Dell sticker and look if there is an apple mark under it.

And replace the damn thing(/battery).

I can almost post here. I've got around 800 saved for my computer. Hopefully no surprise bills come in. I've got a few builds in mind, but nothing final yet.

I'd argue otherwise. Of course the i7 is on top right now, but things like the X3 are a great deal. I usually see a lot of budget AMD builds, since they usually sell for a little less, but there really isn't a difference in quality.

If you have to have the fastest, Intel's the way to go. But I would give AMD high marks for cost-effectiveness currently. As Gilles mentioned, the Phenom II X3 chips beat the socks off the Core 2 Duos and many of the Quads as far as maximum performance for minimum cost goes.

But Sam and I are saying that they don't suck, like Sam said, "the Phenom II X3 chips beat the socks off the Core 2 Duos and many of the Quads as far as maximum performance for minimum cost goes."

I think my next processor will be AMD, mostly because I've never used one, and I'd like to try it out. That way I'll also be more objective, and have personally experience.

Time will tell.

While I love Intel a lot, I personally like to see AMD do well also. Without competition, we the buyers lose in the market.

I haven't seen anyone use one in years. The Phenom was a major disappointment, their ATi division is solid but Nvidia is just as solid, and Intel keeps putting out better chips.
The one forum I spend most of my time supports AMD as much as Intel. A large portion of the members there use AMD, looking at sigs. I haven't seen evidence of other sites being different.

The one thing that would make sense, is if production PCs, like HP and Dell, are using more Intels now. If you can get a stranglehold on that market, it would kill the competition.

Samuraid, yeah, but Intel doesn't have a monopoly. We just see the best performer win. Someone else (Like the Chinese CPU's) will come along to size up Intel, to keep them wary.

Intel has always tried to be the best (Besides the Celeron *shudder*), and I think, even if AMD does goes under, someone else will come along to show them up and keep them from having complete dominance over the industry.
