you don't need to really "work",
I do, seeing as I am probably the only competent programmer so far...

you just need to talk and tell what other people should do.
Which is hours and hours of work writing fool-proof documentation.

And of course, you CAN work if you want, like, if you want to create some models or ... or some animations, or give ideas or whatever, you can also do that, as well as being a leader.
Except so far I am one of the only programmers...

How i see it, a leader of this type of project where it's a bunch of ppl trying to make a cool game together don't have to make all the descisions or hold all the power.
Just someone managing the project by gathering the different material, keeping track of the process, updating and motivating the different participants and take care of the recruitment process is what i'd expect from a leader in this type of project ;)

But hey is this really the priority atm?
We don't even seem close to making a descision about what type of game this will be, maybe if we descide on a theme first it could be easier to come up with a fitting genre/type of gameplay? :)

Themes mentioned so far AFAIK:
Murloc theme
Mage/Warlock theme
Interplanetary Human VS Alien
Super Mario World

Some other suggestions:
Submerged/Waterworld
Egyptian mythology
Greek mythology
Norse mythology
Gladiators
Dragons
Medieval knights and bandits
Fantasy(dwarves, elves, orcs, ents etc.)
Futuristic/space age
Superheroes
Shapeshifters

Come with ur suggestions aswell and let us know what theme you'd like to follow ;)

I'd like several of these themes, my favourites being:
-Mage/Warlock theme
-Gladiators
-Dragons
-Shapeshifters

Kinda depends on what genre/type of gameplay we'll be going for though^^
I like games where you control 1 unit(maybe a couple more if f.ex. ur main unit can summon stuff) and work on making that unit really strong by ugrading certain abilities/aspects of it.
And maybe with stuff you pick up aswell....the most important(imo) is to make the player feel like he/she is sculpturing and growing his/her own superhero which you play with the way you modified it to work best ;)
Sounds very RPG-ish, and i guess it kinda is, but it can be executed in several different ways to fit many different genres :)

Ok. I'm a sucky artist but, I should at least be able to create a stickman Walk animation. Well, I tried once and I can't. How do you expect us to make 2d animations which would be way harder than walk? Of course, it could be just me... but aa, I'm not sure.

Can't we make it like that: 3d models on 2d world, you see only one of their side.

Well, actually, 2d games often look better than 3d since 2d is only art. And 3d is a bit too realistic,... say if you gotta make ..a... a hero, who can turn to 9 sides (like in Diablo 2), all the sides are art. And in 3d it just looks too real and not so cool. I mean, everything in a 3d model doesn't look as good as the concept for that 3d model.

But, we should still stick to 3d since, 2d is sometimes harder to make.

Hi everyone. I saw this discussion a bit late and managed to read only to page 12. Can someone kindly tell me did ANYONE actually said:

I have understanding of OpenGL
I can write on 'this' 'this' and 'this' programming languages.
I can contribute with more than ideas of 'cool' characters and non-pointy-ears fairy elves, molested as children wanting revenge on the big bad guy...

As most of you know despite the games for PS,PC,Browser games etc. the trend of the Mobile gaming (mobile as in iphone, tablet etc games) keeps living up the standards.
In terms of funding , if a project manages to recieve life (before 2030, as someone stated ) it can be implemented on popular mobile stores (the fees of which are minimal I assure you) as hundreds of games -2d, 3d, book-games, art-rpgs are made and sold on the net.

There are many EXTREMELY easy to understand game making engines and software that does the scripting and the hard work for you, while letting you still choose everything else.
For example http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/studio

The GameMaker was a successful software developed in 2002 which allowed a person with no knowledge at all to develop small(or large), yet complex 2D games. From that time to the new game makers available at the stores - its been AGES. Now it can easily be made in 3D too. Check this map - http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/...-03-a-217371/?prev=search=Tickles&d=list&r=20 by Tickles and imagine such project made for browser or mobile platforms. I think this is the direction people focus nowadays.

Browser based games with slow building of an empire are also very popular. For example TheSettlers online , or the upcoming ANNO online.

As a marketing expert (and a junior bank accountant) I monitor the most sales on GooglePlay- the android store for games, applications and etc. 2D RPG turn based games and 'defend the object' games are mostly bought and hold good prices for 2 years now. (Just making a note, if a project is to be made and is quality material, it can easily be worth the work and can pay off. You cant imagine the things people buy on the store lol )

Yes, I am saying that. If it is still unclear, I'm against using ordinary characters (Which you described as the typical heroic elf) for this project. I'll give ideas for more exotic characters, but no matter how the characters are gonna be, I'll gladly contribute by providing useful concept arts for the character designs :)

So far thats basicly me.

I know the fundimentals of OpenGL and Direct3D (although would need to brush up on it a bit).
I can write JAVA, C and C++.

Just an example of a 2d character created with framed animations. male_character_outline_final.jpg

The 2d element is not easier than the 3d. Both ways take an extreme amount of effort and time. I suggest that the man who decides to lead such project, should get a poll rolling for choice on genre and between 2d and 3d. People should just know their limits and not over extend them. It's counter-productive at most.

I realize that the past 20 pages are people's comprehensions about what a 'leader' should be, and that the actual thinking process should include 'HOW' before 'WHO' (as famous programmer who's name I can not remember sais).

Could you provide some test material and the Unity itself. I for once haven't seen it in action and would love to do so.Is it a game engine or just a programming language ? I try to google it but some jibbirish come up.
edit: Ok I found it and I can tell what I said above.People should just know their limits and not over extend them. It seems complex and that would exclude 99% of the people here, who don't get the chance to look into it more extensively.

As I browse through the Unity webpage I do get the feeling that most of it is 'need to buy' and is very limited for free use. The Asset store looks scary with those prices.

Look Lordkoon. You have programmers, artists, idea people (everyone actually), leader and other. People don't need to understand Unity. Only 2-3 of them need to that since they're the programmers and those who work with unity. There will be someone else to take the terrain making part and the programmers will explain him what to do (but not everything about unity, just that) and he'll do it. The leader will ask the story teller what kind of creatures we need and then tell the artists what to draw. The artist don't need to understand how Unity works. They just gotta draw, make textures, icon, UI, etc. And we already have people who understand how unity works - Stath and DSG can work OpenGL, Direct 3D (I have no idea what this is, but I think it's a programming thing????). You see, not all of us need to know how game engines and such stuff work. One is enough. He can explain it in short if we really need to know that. Look, Unity may be hard to work with, but if we have people who know how to work with it, why not use it? It's really good! And actually, as far as I know from a friend, not too hard to understand and work with.

I really think that we SHOULD use Unity and not some other, not that good program for making games.

"Do you honestly believe this? The engine comes with enough assets (trees, ground tiles, models and skins) to build the basic game. This is not a task done by one or two people. It's not the freaking world editor in war craft. "

Yes I do. Ok, a friend and I, we make some simple models from time to time and put the on Unity and such. See, he sends me the "texture" (black with white lines to mark the shape) and I just draw on it. That's all. Simple. Then he puts it on the model (the .TGA file I sent him) and after that puts it in the game. That's all when it comes to textures. So, artists, basically, don't need to know anything about Unity. They just draw what they are told to draw. Concepts, icons, textures for models and such. Those who understand Unity know how to put the textures on the model, the icons in the game and all, and they do it. And that's all. I mean, that's all about textures icon and such. Of course, there are some extremely hard to make stuff but we don't want any of them do we? Like some trigger about a spell which is too hard to make and some quest system trigersahdgisg 9erhidfhk and such.

If your problem is the "attaching" to the game, well, I'm pretty sure that THIS is one of our minor and easy to fix problems. You have an image, you attach it in-game and do some stuff with it. And that's done by those who know how to do it. One person for this job is enough. Actually, this takes like (well, I'm not sure, but my friend does it for 2 minutes, but he's kinda slow (at least when it comes to playing games)) so... I don't think that attaching the texture is our biggest problem, or the tile, or the icon, or whatever it is. The problem are the very codes for the game. And the fact that we won't be able to make it 3d so we'll have to make it 2d which is shit cuz 2d is... shit. It takes a lot of time to make 2d stuff. Our main problem is those codes, triggers, or whatever you call them in Unity, and I KNOW that 2 people aren't enough for this job, but, Hey, we got 2 from each, which is not enough, so lets just do it with less people. Less people = more work. More people = less work. That's how it is. It doesn't matter if we have 1 or 100 if they are at the same level of programming. Well, actually it does matter, but only when it comes to time. If those 2 aren't able to make something, even if we had 100 (at the same level of Statharas and DSG) we still wouldn't be able to make it. So in the end, I still think, that, not all of us need to know how these stuff work. We just need to do our part and the leader to do his part and "match" our works and build the game with 1-2 assistants (that's where the storyteller is very important since HE is the one who says "we need, for example, demon creatures since the story is about demons", the leader just tells who should do what and such. There's another problem though, we got like 2 main leader and 2 main programmers atm and the problem is that they are both Statharas and DSG and I think that it may be a bit of toooo much work on them -.-

You do realize that Unity does give you most of the tools you need? With minor exceptions of stuff that requires Pro, but those are miniscule compared to what you can do with mere scripting.

AAAAaand no, they were not about who the leader SHOULD be, but on what they want the game to be.

See, I have some irl life problems, plus the fact that i cannot afford to repair my laptop's monitor (God bless Greece).

Hmm, Greece is kinda fine actually xD

anyway, we aint got much problems left. Just... just :\ lets start wow! Who's gonna make the story? It all depends on him. And what type of creatures he would want to use and such.

But REALLY I think it's REALLY important that we use Skype or Facebook or something similar, we need a chat, not a forum. And when someone posts something in this chat you can still read it in the chat history. Skype would be good for that :p Lets just create a discussion and discuss the stuff there! Instead of talking 30 days and doing.. well, THIS! we could have talked 4 days and get to this result (nothing but .. actually, something, ideas and such, etc.)

Why stress about it, we're not getting paid and there's no deadline - we do this for our own entertainment, right? If not, I don't know what should motivate me to continue :)
Not saying we should slack, but it takes time to reach a good result and a good result is better than a rushed result obviously ^^

Anyways, what happened to those poll threads we planned to make? They would surely move the process in the right direction :)
