Weekend Mapping Madness

To test and see if there's still merits for Warcraft III map making competitions, here's my idea for a simple, short and fun map making competition, that should be easy to finish an entry for.

attachment.php

Over the course of three days, lasting from friday to sunday, in teams of two, as a part of this contest you shall create a map - a minigame if you will - based around the theme of hero survival. This theme should be broad enough, so that it allows for a lot of creativity, while still limiting the entries in the sense that there won't be maps of too conflicting gameplay types, such as one map being a Tower Defence, the next being a Footman Frenzy and the third a Hero Arena. It's simple: In a team of two, you need to make a minigame map, based around heroes surviving something. The rest is up to you.

The reason for this being based around a team effort, and not a solo one, is to allow for people of different talents to join up and split the workload, which is to be done in a crunch, seing as the contest only lasts three days.

Judging
Judging should be divided between a staff-appointed judge and a public poll, where in you can vote for your favorite entry. Each vote counts for 1 point.

Judging criteria should be based around the fun factor (0 - 5 points), creativity (0 - 5 points) and Aesthetics (0 - 5 points), resulting in a max score of 15 from the judge. While usually judging the coding would also be of importance, for a minigame contest I feel that it isn't nescesary. If your map during the short game time actually starts lagging it will affect the level of enjoyment, and therefor automaticly bring the fun factor down and by that your amount of points in that category.

Awards
1st place - award icon and 30 rep split among the team.
2nd place - 20 rep split among the team.
3rd place - 10 rep split among the team.

Rules / Limitations
This is a minigame, and a quick one at that, therefor the map may not exceed 2mb - be creative!
As mentioned earlier, the map must be made by a team of two people.
Resources not made by yourselves may be used, but must be credited either in the loadingscreen, in the start of the game or in the quest log.

Total Teams15

That's the general line-up. Discussion of the rules, limitations, concept and what not is encouraged!

this could be interesting

protip: find a partner in a different time zone as you, so you can work while they sleep and vice versa. But make sure there's some overlap for communication
Do you think there's any chance getting hosted?
And if so, please make sure people know about it a week or so ahead of the starting date (via a news post or announcement or something), so they have a fair chance at finding a partner.

Was planning on doing that
Really, what difference does that make? The time spent would still be equal.
Well you can't exactly work on a map at the same time as someone else... merging the two copies isn't exactly all that easy in WE

The communication'll be quite hard, I guess. Well... it's only for a weekend, so you should be quite active..

What am I saying, this'll be a great succes. I hope it'll get hosted!

Uhm the contest starts next weekend, not this weekend.
I need to find a partner as well :p

Kael , you want to be whit me?

EDIT:
Awards
1st place - award icon and 30 rep split among the team.
2nd place - 20 rep split among the team.
3rd place - 10 rep split among the team.

does that mean if I win , we both get 30 rep or it get split in half (15 for both).

Idea is awesome but honestly you can't see when someone created map?
I for example have 5 or 6 half finished templates that I created 2 or more years ago, in 20 min it can be good in 1 hour awesome arena or something like that

Well all else is ok, if I find some time and buddy to work with me maybe I can join if not I will ask for place to be Judge

Well it's a good idea, I also like the size limit to 2mb (cuz i have 20kb/s upload :O)
I will join if my friend (Khaled) wants to work with me on this.
EDIT:
How do you know that the mappers ain't started earlier ? o_O
They just have to be honest, this could happen in every contest, you can't really do anything about it. But now if someone would make a 128x128 map in 3 days, then I would rather not accept it.

I love teamwork, I am in.
Questions:
1- Is there a defined number of players for the map (the map should have more than one player or the map should support solo playing, AI players can be added)?
2- When you say a mini game you mean: A- a game that is over in 10 minutes. B- a game that is over in less than 1 hour. How long should the game last to be considered a mini game?
3- Is it OK to have a goal beside surviving to the end of the game?
I apologize for asking these questions but I need an answer to avoid misunderstandings, and thanks in advanced for the on to answer.

Suggestion: Can we have a table where the names of the people who want to join and the people who teamed up are placed to facilitate the teaming up process (I know it is a luxury but it’ll contribute to the success of the contest as more people will be able to find teams and join).

MY SKILLS:
GUI coding.
Mid level Terraining.
High level game design and brainstorming.
Time line: GMT +3 (but I can be available almost 24/24).
Would rather team up with a coder but anyone is welcomed.

I don't want to make a table, but if someone else sets it up I can update the first post sure :p

And any amount of players should be acceptable. A minigame can incorporate any number of players, can't it?

I don't believe in any given time limit for the map to last, as some concepts might allow for continuous play without breaching the fact that it's just a simple, little map.

As long as the map centers on some "heroes" surviving shit, then sure, you can incorporate other stuff. However making some sort of RPG based around questing might not be the best idea :p

I would say what constitutes a minigame is that the concept is simple and quick to play. You should be able to just play it for 15 minutes and have fun, but there's no reason to restrict it to JUST 15 minutes.

Examples of minigames could be Hungry Hungry Felhound, Pass the bomb and Pirate Tag!

Teams of two + short deadline = impossible.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE! I'M IN! If you need a partner count me in! I can make a simple map by myself- but if you didn't know terrain is my forte' and triggers not my strong suit. But I can make a perfect partner to anyone who just knows their way around a trigger. Am I being redundant? Anyway, this just sounds like a fun idea. I already have ideas swimming around in my little yellow head. (Refer to avatar? IDK.)
