Maybe it should be mentioned somewhere that nowadays, Prince of Persia is best experienced imho with PoP1-Total Pack or with SDLPoP.

    SDLPoP forums:
    SDLPoP - Prince of Persia

    PoP1-Total Pack forum:
PoP1-Total Pack: New version development - Prince of Persia

Regarding PoP1-Total Pack, Windows XP users will currently have trouble updating the Custom Levels list / downloading the mods. This is because when popot.org made the switch to HTTPS in July 2017, some decisions regarding the configuration of the server were made.

Also, be aware that the developers of the Custom Levels for Prince of Persia expect you to know (and to have already mastered) each and every glitch of the original game. Therefore, playing these additional levels / mods may be a *very* frustrating experience for the casual gamer.

PoP1-Total Pack is imho very convenient for playing the original game with different combinations of graphics for the dungeons / palace / characters.

    .kkrieger

It is the beta version of a 95 KB (97,280 bytes) playable FPS game.

    full4.jpg

This was made possible, thanks to the use of procedural generation.

    full1.jpg full2.jpg full3.jpg full4.jpg full5.jpg

"In general, if you have any technical questions concerning .kkrieger, either refer to our web site or contact us via email. However past experience shows that there are some rumours and misunderstandings about our work that are very hard to correct, so we'll state the truth here, in written form, for all the world to see :)

    - We do .not. have some kind of magical data compression machine that is able to squeeze hundreds of megabytes of mesh/texture and sound data into 96k. We merely store the individual steps employed by the artists to produce their textures and meshes, in a very compact way. This allows us to get .much. higher data density than is achievable with normal data compression techniques, at some expense in artistic freedom and loading times.

    - .kkrieger is not written in 100% assembler/machine language. Not even nearly. Like the vast majority of game projects being developed today, .kkrieger was mostly written in C++, with some tiny bits of assembler where it is actually advantageous (notably, there are a lot of MMX optimisations in the texture generator).

    - A kilobyte is, historically, defined to be 1024 (2^10) bytes, not 1000. Thus .kkrieger is a game in 96k even though it's actually 98304 bytes.

    - The concept of the texture/mesh generators was developed by fiver2. We do .not. want to claim that the techniques we used to develop .kkrieger are new inventions. It´s rather a selection of useful operations and their parameters to optimise the results."
The "official" minimum specs for .kkrieger: chapter 1 beta are:
    • A 1.5GHz pentium 3 / athlon or faster.
    • 512MB of RAM.
    • a GeForce4Ti (or higher) or ATI Radeon8500 (or higher) graphics card supporting pixel shaders 1.3, preferably with 128MB or more of VRAM.
    • some kind of sound hardware.
    • DirectX 9.0b.
however, there's bad news: due to an unnoticed build error in the actual released version of .kkrieger, there are severe shadow bugs on Geforce4 and Radeon8500/9000 cards. the game should be playable, but everything will be way to dark.

The full list of known bugs (which will of course be fixed in the final version) is:

    • shadow bugs on GeForce4 and Radeon8500/9000 cards.
    • "everything is red" bug on some NVidia Card/Driver combinations.
    • sudden big framerate drops that go away when a certain monster gets killed.
    • several collision bugs.
    • alt-tab doesn't work properly.
    • crashes during the "loading" phase.

For those interested, there is the Farbrausch GitHub to explore.

96KB, that is unbelievable. I test it on old 512 MB ram shitty computer and it works. Did they actually finish developing this beta game?

As of this writing, there is no final version of the game afaik.

However, the werkkzeug3_kkrieger folder on GitHub incorporates changes that were done more than one year after the original kkrieger release. But the resulting compiled code may be "unlikely to work", according to the developers.

.werkkzeug3 was the proprietary (unreleased back then) development tool for .kkrieger.
On the contrary, .werkkzeug1 had a proper official release in 2004.

    Ecstatica

The characters and the environments are made of ellipsoid graphics, which was very unusual at the time (and it still is).
