This is where you can find all your favorite PC game top list (including mods). It does not matter which version, engine or theme, just comment and DO NOT overwrite the same game again. I will update the list once something new pop up. +rep for sharing, guys. Also +rep to me if you see this useful.

Note: The mod has to be a huge modified + completed and provides good replay value and gameplay.

Now, lets put your knowledge about games into the table.

This is where you can find all your favorite PC game top list (including mods).
Are you talking about ModDB?
Games and mods development for Windows, Linux and Mac
Mods for Games

Note: The mod has to be a huge modified + completed and provides good replay value and gameplay.
StarCraft: Burning Ground mod

A few caveats, though:
- requires Brood War v1.16.1
- game opening strategies are very limited imho
- best played on maps with *wide* ramps

In the Flight simulator / Space Combat category (to be added):

- TIE Fighter - Collector's CD-ROM Edition (1995)

"The [1995] CD-ROM version offered optional enhanced SVGA graphics, increasing the game's resolution from 320x200 to 640x480. The cinematic cutscenes were also enhanced, and the game received numerous voiceovers. The CD-ROM includes the previously released Defender of the Empire expansion and an additional Enemies of the Empire expansion. This CD-ROM also added support for gameplay under Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9."

Also, the 1995 CD-ROM version of the game includes more Star Wars spacecraft than the floppy disk version.

Caveats:
- MS-DOS game (nowadays, DOSBox is your best friend )
- No texture mapping
- No joystick support

SiN - Wikipedia
SiN Windows, Mac, Linux game

Probably best experienced with the fan-made Sin Ultimate Patch. For an enhanced gaming experience, Sin Resurrected may also be worth checking out. Widescreen fixes are here.

Caveats:
- some censorship with the Steam version of the game.
- The Retail version of the game may crash on startup on modern PCs. If you have a Codec Pack installed, then adding an exception for sin.exe may fix the issue.

My list, in no particular order:

1. Europa Universalis IV - if you're into history and one of those folks that dreamed about creating an empire, it's definetely a game you should try.

2. Knights of Honor - while Europa Universalis might be pretty hard to understand at first, KoH is very simple and user friendly. The only downside is that the base game is extremely easy, so once you get seasoned, you might want to try out some mods that make it harder.

3. Armies of Exigo - a rather simple Warcraft 3 "clone", but with a pretty fun story, a lengthy campaign and a more serious vibe. Cool features include all units gaining experience, underground areas on the map and spells that require multiple casters. Overall a definetely nice game to check out by anyone who enjoyed W3.

4. Titan Quest with Immortal Throne addition - another pretty old game, but still pretty fun. Offers a nice customization system, a lengthy campaign and pretty fun boss encounters.

5. Starcraft (series), Diablo (series), Warcraft (series) and World of Warcraft (series) - my favourite Blizzard games, not really much to be said about them here except the fact that for instance, W3 is the only game that I had continously installed on my PC for the last 10 years or so :)

6. Football Manager (series) - if you're a fan of football/soccer and would like to test yourself as a manager of your beloved club, this is definetely a game for you. It offers a lot of depth and despite it's simple appearance - a lot of fun.

7. FIFA/Pro Evolution Soccer (series) - another one for football/soccer fans, this time a little more hands on. Great game for playing with your buddies during parties :)

8. Minecraft: Feed the Beast mod - yes, it looks aren't great, but what you'll find is that Minecraft alone allows you to build a lot of stuff and Feed the Beast mod-pack increases your options by a ton. To me, it captures at least some of the appeal from lego building back in the days when I was a kid, so it definetely has to be on this list.

9. Pokemon (GBA games - Pokemon Gold for instance) - kill me for it, but these games bring back a lot of memories. Back when Pokemon were popular, me and a couple of my friends played this and tried to find the best composition to win the league. And yes, it's a Gameboy Advanced game, but it goes on a PC list, because I've always played it on the GBA emulator :)

Commandos 2
- Best strategy and tactic role playing game.

x222-jpg.285453

Metro 2033 / Metro 2034 (Metro Series)
- Steampunk, post-apocalyptic Russia, and great gameplay. I'm waiting for Exodus on 2018.

An old favorite of mine:
The Ancient Art of War - Wikipedia

"The Ancient Art of War is generally recognized as one of the first real-time strategy or real-time tactics games, a genre which become hugely popular a decade later with Dune II and Warcraft. [...]"

Maybe it should be mentioned somewhere that nowadays, Prince of Persia is best experienced imho with PoP1-Total Pack or with SDLPoP.

SDLPoP forums:
SDLPoP - Prince of Persia

PoP1-Total Pack forum:
PoP1-Total Pack: New version development - Prince of Persia

Regarding PoP1-Total Pack, Windows XP users will currently have trouble updating the Custom Levels list / downloading the mods. This is because when popot.org made the switch to HTTPS in July 2017, some decisions regarding the configuration of the server were made.

Also, be aware that the developers of the Custom Levels for Prince of Persia expect you to know (and to have already mastered) each and every glitch of the original game. Therefore, playing these additional levels / mods may be a *very* frustrating experience for the casual gamer.

PoP1-Total Pack is imho very convenient for playing the original game with different combinations of graphics for the dungeons / palace / characters.

Dark Earth

Probably best experienced nowadays with Peixoto's Patches (untested)
VOGONS • View topic - Peixoto's patches for a few old games

PJ: courtesy of @Hallfiry, this is the latest version that I am aware about, of the Dark Earth CRH player. This standalone Windows command line tool allows one to freely view the FMVs of the game.

Caveats:
If the game crashes while saving, then disable DirectDraw acceleration to fix the issue.

Dark Earth (video game) - Wikipedia

Those camera angle feels like Resident Evil in Middle-Age. Nice game!

.kkrieger

It is the beta version of a 95 KB (97,280 bytes) playable FPS game.

full4.jpg

This was made possible, thanks to the use of procedural generation.

full1.jpg full2.jpg full3.jpg full4.jpg full5.jpg

"In general, if you have any technical questions concerning .kkrieger, either refer to our web site or contact us via email. However past experience shows that there are some rumours and misunderstandings about our work that are very hard to correct, so we'll state the truth here, in written form, for all the world to see :)

- We do .not. have some kind of magical data compression machine that is able to squeeze hundreds of megabytes of mesh/texture and sound data into 96k. We merely store the individual steps employed by the artists to produce their textures and meshes, in a very compact way. This allows us to get .much. higher data density than is achievable with normal data compression techniques, at some expense in artistic freedom and loading times.

- .kkrieger is not written in 100% assembler/machine language. Not even nearly. Like the vast majority of game projects being developed today, .kkrieger was mostly written in C++, with some tiny bits of assembler where it is actually advantageous (notably, there are a lot of MMX optimisations in the texture generator).

- A kilobyte is, historically, defined to be 1024 (2^10) bytes, not 1000. Thus .kkrieger is a game in 96k even though it's actually 98304 bytes.

- The concept of the texture/mesh generators was developed by fiver2. We do .not. want to claim that the techniques we used to develop .kkrieger are new inventions. It´s rather a selection of useful operations and their parameters to optimise the results."
The "official" minimum specs for .kkrieger: chapter 1 beta are:
  • A 1.5GHz pentium 3 / athlon or faster.
  • 512MB of RAM.
  • a GeForce4Ti (or higher) or ATI Radeon8500 (or higher) graphics card supporting pixel shaders 1.3, preferably with 128MB or more of VRAM.
  • some kind of sound hardware.
  • DirectX 9.0b.
however, there's bad news: due to an unnoticed build error in the actual released version of .kkrieger, there are severe shadow bugs on Geforce4 and Radeon8500/9000 cards. the game should be playable, but everything will be way to dark.

The full list of known bugs (which will of course be fixed in the final version) is:

  • shadow bugs on GeForce4 and Radeon8500/9000 cards.
  • "everything is red" bug on some NVidia Card/Driver combinations.
  • sudden big framerate drops that go away when a certain monster gets killed.
  • several collision bugs.
  • alt-tab doesn't work properly.
  • crashes during the "loading" phase.

For those interested, there is the Farbrausch GitHub to explore.

As of this writing, there is no final version of the game afaik.

However, the werkkzeug3_kkrieger folder on GitHub incorporates changes that were done more than one year after the original kkrieger release. But the resulting compiled code may be "unlikely to work", according to the developers.

.werkkzeug3 was the proprietary (unreleased back then) development tool for .kkrieger.
On the contrary, .werkkzeug1 had a proper official release in 2004.

Links to the demotools of Farbrausch can be found at the end of this page:

Quake III Arena (demo version)
Unreal Tournament (1999, demo version)

The demo versions of these two games have enough replayability value and are imho feature-rich enough (especially UT99), so that buying the full games feels not that mandatory in the end.

On August 19, 2005, id Software released the complete source code for Quake III Arena under the GNU General Public License. Some modern game engines (such as ioquake3) can run using the data from the demo version of the game.

Unfortunately there are afaik no unofficial third-party patches / video or audio renderers / S3TC texture packs, that are suitable for the demo version of UT99.

Selected quotes of possible interest for game developers (I hope Blizzard will read this):
"[...] The development team for Unreal Tournament consisted of around 16 people. Most team members had worked on Unreal, though Epic hired a number of new developers to reinforce the team. [...] In December 1998, [Brandon] Reinhart discovered an Unreal mod called UBrowser, which provided a new user interface for finding multiplayer matches. After showing it to James Schmalz, the lead designer at Digital Extremes, Schmalz decided to hire the mod's author, Jack Porter. After only a few weeks Porter was already working with the team, replacing the game's existing menu system with his new interface. [...]"

"[...] Lead designer Cliff Bleszinski credited much of the game's success to its community. As he said in the November 2001 issue of Maximum PC, "Unreal Tournament would not have sold nearly two million copies if it did not have support from the community... We ship the very same tools that we used to build the game, and folks use these tools to realize their own visions of first-person action." Like Unreal, Unreal Tournament is designed to be easily programmable and highly modularized. Through its scripting environment UnrealScript and level editor UnrealEd, developers are able to modify easily most parts of the game to both manipulate default game behavior and to supplement the game with their own mods. These range from slight changes on some aspects of gameplay (such as map voting) to total conversions. One modification, ChaosUT, became popular enough that it was included with the 'Game of the Year' edition of the game, while Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror was released as a stand-alone retail product. [...]"

That art style reminds me of LoM
Both games were developed by Square.

Star Wars: The Battle of Yavin and Star Wars: The Battle of Endor, by Bruno R. Marcos

Now, the Battle of Yavin definitively feels more satisfying here than its 'recreation' by LucasArts in Star Wars: X-Wing.

There exist third-party graphic and sound upgrades/mods for both games.

The ones developed by Master_Syrus (BoY - BoE) are the most graphics intensive iirc.
The ones developed by Lurker (BoY - BoE) are less demanding, but they may also alter the gameplay.

Manually updating the Truevision3D dlls to v6.3 might help with performance, or not.
