Well, you are talking about our Blackhand, and this is WOD Blackhand. Their past is not the same.

Not even remotely confirmed yet. The other warlords share very similar histories (with minor differences) to our Azeroth, why should Blackhand be any different?

For one thing, the comic actually gave us a reason for his name (and, by extension, his new design most likely). Before that, he was just "Blackhand the Destroyer" with no significant backstory whatsoever. And I hate to say it, but I find his original design to be quite ridiculous compared to the WoD one.

But, opinions and all that. I can certainly understand why you would like the WC1 manual version better, Tauer, and I respect your opinion. I personally think the new Blackhand is better, not necessarily his furnace armor but at LEAST the gear he wore in the Blackhand comic. And his black, elemental-affected hand.

800px-Blackhand_with_Doomhammer.jpg

I'd be very happy with a version of this, preferably without the Doomhammer. That was a temporary thing anyway. It's like a blend between old and new, with no ridiculous WC1 manual helmet and no furnace armor. Plus the reason for his name is in full view.

Yeah his WoD look is super badass and they actually reiterated on the whole "Blackhand" thing. His WC1 look with the antlered helmet is great but there's already like 5 models of that. His WoD appearance made him one of the most unique looking of all the Warlords. Very much worth making IMO

Progress is slow. Did some fine tuning on his torso, don't think I can do much more for it.

That is really cool. One thing though: I think that you should ease up a bit on the TC shading. Maybe you could make it lighter towards the front and darker to the sides(I'm referring mainly to the scarf). Since it's a WIP I suppose it's too early to judge.
Edit: You're really good at torsos btw, I might learn from you a lot.

Damn, that's starting to turn out so nicely, I can feel the WC2 vibes! Loving it so far.

Same here. It's time to fire up the good old wc2 lore character sheets.

That new Xavius looks awful. :(

I don't get the new designs too. I mean Xavius is an evil mastermind and demon servant and not a frickin dumb looking demon brute (as seen in the new addon, I mean look at him ^^) That tongue is so ridicilous

It's truly horrendous. I think that you can't get any closer to Satan's description than there.
It's totally off and it looks like some abomino stitched up together by fur and fel energies.

Well, you are talking about our Blackhand, and this is WOD Blackhand. Their past is not the same.
And honestly there is no need to try to find logic in video games, in my book if something looks cool, I am OK with it.
And other thing is, every warlord was unique in some way, only Blackhand was.. a guy with stag antlers on his head? That was it... I know, I know, he was first warchief, but still...

Well, I like "the walling furnace" the most!

Believe me, the antlers weren't that bad compared to the walking furnace.
It looks more like a elemental than an orc. I know, design choices but it's just too extreme tbh.

That's because Xavius has become a Miley Cyrus fan.

Good heavens....

Blackhand's antler design is better because it actually fits the way his character is written. He was originally a part of the Sythegore Arm, a division of raiders in the original Horde. The antler helm is a signature of raiders which can be seen on the Warcraft 3 unit, dating all the way back to Warcraft 1. The Sythegore Arm is referenced in the Warcraft 2 manual as well, as such making it more canon than WoW for me.

Second, the furnace design is ridiculously unfitting for Blackhand for the simple reason that it looks magical. Blackhand is a warrior through-and-through, but the flames under his armor makes him seem like some kind of warrior/firemage hybrid which makes no sense for his character.

Third, character design should be inspired by lore not the other way around. With the walking furnace design it seems like Blizzard told their concept artists to draw the most badass over-the-top design they could, and then later wrote his character in WoD based on the concept. The antler-design is actually backed up and inspired by the way his character was written.

But ultimately, since I'm making the models I get full veto power. So sorry, there will be no WoD Blackhand. Maybe one of the other awesome modelers here would like to take a swing at him.

And Xavius is a no-go simply because he looks ridiculous. It's not even just the distortion/corruption. His whole shape looks horribly out of place. It's like a whole different artstyle. Way too chibi, looks like he belongs in a Wii game.
As I said, I might make him based on the original concept art though.

You are absolutely right, and the scarf is actually the part of the texture I'm not really happy with. It originally had even deeper blacks before I lit it up a bit. I'm thinking I might redo the scarf entirely, there seems to be way too many small folds as well. It would look better with fewer bigger folds.

Sorry guys, I don't have much progress to show you. I only did his hands and got started on his shoulderpad. I'll post some WIPs when I have more to show you guys.

I wish they added some mention of the Arm in WoD. That would've been cool. :(

Second, the furnace design is ridiculously unfitting for Blackhand for the simple reason that it looks magical. Blackhand is a warrior through-and-through, but the flames under his armor makes him seem like some kind of warrior/firemage hybrid which makes no sense for his character.

He was retrieving Doomhammer from some elemental lava pool that had mystical properties and it charred his arm hence getting the name Blackhand. The power later infused him with the power of a fire elemental. or fury as they're called on Draenor, and that's the result of his flaming appearance. But from a personal standpoint while facing him in Blackrock Foundry he fights like a warrior but way more braggadocios lmaoo.

As I said, I might make him based on the original concept art though.

Sweet. Being the first satyr he'll probably look a lot buffer than most, also considering as a night elf he stood taller than most.

Sorry guys, I don't have much progress to show you. I only did his hands and got started on his shoulderpad. I'll post some WIPs when I have more to show you guys.

Any updates since your last post? You seemed to have made everyone go quiet haha.

Haha. I was thinking the same thing when they released Xavius. I think they really messed him up. Blizzard should've just stuck to him being a Satyr, not an abomination.

Hey guys. After pulling my usual annual dissapearing act, I'm back. Sorta. Still pretty busy, but I'll be modeling whenever I have spare time.

First off, sorry for dropping out of the modeling contest so suddenly. It was just really badly timed for me. I went traveling just a few days after the contest started and as soon as I came home the new semester started, and I started getting really busy.

I know some people will be dissapointed, but Zul'jin is (once again) on hold for a bit. I don't know what it is about that model, but I just don't enjoy working on him as much as other models. I'll finish him at some point. Maybe when my skills are better it'll be more fun.

Now for the good stuff. I've started work on a new model, Lothar:

Pretty excited about this model since it's the first human model I've made (I think). I'm especially looking forward to texturing him. I wanna make him look as close to that concept as possible.

Modeling is going solid so far. Just did the lion shoulderpad, still doing a few touch-ups. I'll probably start on his head tomorrow, and then finish up with the sword and shield sometime next week.

Any feedback is welcome.

The GOD is back once again, and wow, man, that looks so awesome and fitting with in game models. I did a model of Lothar some months ago but I didn't like very much the results. http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/models-530/hero_lothar-273221/
Great start, can't wait to see the head.

Nice to see you back, Tauer!
Zul'jin being on hold is a big bummer indeed, but it's not worth working on something that you don't enjoy. So I understand you in that regard. Really hoping to see it out one day (this year hopefully! :D), since I was looking forward to it.

Eyecums out upon seeing this work. You're quite solid with WC3 proportions as of now.
It's really on theme.

It's been awhile since we've seen you around.
Do visit more often and tease us more with these works ;)

I have the same issue with this skin. I suppose it's a thing of priority and preference.
You'll get around eventually.

Thank you! Yeah, I know it's a bit dissapointing. But there's just something about working on that model that bugs me. Maybe I'm just racist against trolls :p

Seriously though, I will finish it at some point.

Sick! Glad you're back, man!

If you got time, you should consider joining this most recent Contest; the theme is sick, and I'd be quite excited to see your take on it. : )

That Lothar is lookin' fiiiiiiiiine~

Good to be back ;)
I have checked out the contest and I agree, it's a really sweet theme. But I'm hesitant about joining another contest, since I failed to deliver on the last two (and only) contests I entered.

Amazing comeback man, love that lothar!

Thanks ;)

Thank you mate, I am quite pleased with how the mesh is turning out this time.

A few WIPs before I sleep. Optimized the lion shoulder a bit and started on the head:

Hey, life comes at us all. No one will think anything of it; Internet memory is, like, what, 20 seconds? :D

You do what you can. And in this case, you can *totally* do this. You've got the skills to pay the bills!

You're a great guy, and you are trying hard, and no one can fault you for that either way. : )

This is awesome.

Are you going to make custom animations or take them from the paladin model?

Yeah, I always make custom animations for my models.

Oh boy. Now there's some pleasant news! Good to have you back (again), Tauer. :)

Though I may glare at you with disapproval for delaying the Zul'jin model, Lothar looks absolutely fantastic. Truth be told, any new development from you is a blessing! Definitely looking forward to seeing more. Keep on keeping on, Tauer.

Thanks mate, it feels good to be back at it again.

I promise I'll finish Zul'jin some day. Hopefully some time in the foreseeable future.

Welcome back man, And I can't wait for this new awesome Model of yours :D

Thanks! :)

Tauer, after you finish Lothar, will you continue with more WC2's horde characters? *o* *o* *o*

Maybe. Most likely. Definately?
I am a Horde guy, and WC2 is my favorite period :p
I also have Zul'jin to think about.

Still modeling, got some work done on his shield:

I know it's a bit too small right now, I'll scale it up.

Wow! Tauer is back!

I think your new model looks cool. So, what you feel, when you make Alliance model? You more prefer Horde than Alliance?

Welcome back, my old friend! Even without the textures I can tell this model will be simply astounding, as usual! I believe I might smell another Director's Cut in your near future. :D

If I might make a small suggestion/request, do you think you might include a slightly different variation, similar to what you did for Garona, for his Warcraft I self, basically just add hair and a modified texture to look a bit younger? Just a thought XP

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Are you gonna include a brown-haired version as well for use in Warcraft 1 era maps? :)

Wow, I leave for a couple of months and suddenly the whole site is different.

Really sorry for dropping out so quickly this time around guys. That wasn't cool. Real life and all that. I wish I could say I was back for good, but exams are coming up so...

But! I just watched the Warcraft movie and I kinda got motivated to get back into it. So while I can't promise to be super active, I'm gonna try to get some work done on Lothar whenever I can.

I don't really have anything to show you right now as I literally just opened 3Ds Max. But hopefully I'll have something to show soon. Thanks for the support!

Well, real life is always more important :). I can't wait to watch it. It's not yet available in our country. How was the movie? Is it good? Judging from the teasers and trailers I can say they did a great job.
About your model, can't wait to see it finished, mostly because I am really currious about the animations. And good luck with the exams, I know the feeling...:p

Greetings Tauer. It is quite the sight for you to be around.
I was wondering how goes the progress with that Lothar model you've started awhile ago?

Seeing as the movie featured him quite, it would be great to see something whenever you have some time on your hands.
~Regards.

Yep, I have started working on it again. I don't really have anything to show yet, just finishing up the mesh.
As soon as I start texturing I'll post more WIPs.

Regardless, this is a Tauer's models thread not a movie thread, so... again, Tauer, any chance of a brown-haired Lothar variant like in Warcraft 1? :D

Sure, I don't see why not. I'll probably just make an alternate texture with a younger face and brown hair.

I agree pacing was a bit of an issue (though a second viewing changed that for me, personally), but I disagree about the lore changes. I think they made more sense narratively than the game's lore.

For example, Orgrim's native clan. It makes FAR more sense for him to be a Frostwolf and be Durotan's friend than to be a Blackrock and be Durotan's friend. Such a friendship would be easier to believe and more natural than if they'd gone with the Blackrock angle. I can't really buy into the idea he was Durotan's friend in the games. I know he was, but I just find it VERY difficult to believe since they never would have seen each other more than once a year. If anything they'd just be acquaintances that got along well together.

Agree to disagree I guess. Personally, I think the fact that they are from different clans is the very core of their friendship. It tells a lot about their characters, especially Durotan and how willing he is to challenge traditions and authority.
In the movie they're just regular pals.

Yes, that was a thing Tauer. It's implied in the movie and confirmed in the novelization. I personally prefer that take since it means no half-draenei retcon and NO MED'AN! :D

Huh, I totally missed that. Could you point which scene this was implied? When Medivh was talking about his lost love? I agree with you that this is a good change. Pairing Medivh and Garona was a horrible decision, and Med'an is a lore abomination.

And as much as I'd have loved for it to just be an adaptation of the Warcraft 1 manual, I feel the goal was to try to make the universe and lore at least SOMEWHAT recognizable. Most of the audience haven't even played the original Warcrafts, so going with something so radically different to the current lore would have turned audiences off even more.
I don't really think that Warcraft 1 lore is "radically" different to the current lore at all. There might have been some minor retcons, but mostly they could've based it on the novels and games based on the First War, and it would've been both straightfoward/easy to understand and lore-friendly.
