If you're going to be doing a LAN, is it that hard to get another ethernet cable?

Huh? ALL the computers in my LAN network are hooked up with ethernet cables, that's not the problem! The proplem is: weather or not the game will even allow me to start up a LAN! Because even if I have my computers are hooked up to eachother, it means nothing if the game NEVER USES SAID CABLES!

... I just ranted at someone for little-no reason...

... sorry, I'm real sorry...

... I just... I just thought everyone knew where our little "discusion" was going...

...私を許しなさい (please forgive me)

They really should include lan. They can think of better ways to prevent piracy can't they? As against even this idea, they could at least have it so every1 needs an individual cd key. that'll help fend it off. Even if they get rid of lan, that wont stop piracy, people always find ways around it.

Didn't they note Red Alert 3? They didn't include LAN either and they lost a lot of customers. Besides, use some reasoning. Would you rather have some people steal the game off the net and have decent customers? Or lose even more customers from lack of features?

Okay purple, I read over all of your threads, time for a reply.

I wouldn't be surprised if they support mods in some way, shape, or form, but if they don't then ooh aah. Mods rarely (read: never) get finished anyways, and TToR was not particularly good.

Mods do get finished, even if not always. One of my personal favorites is Ultimate Doom. And yes, I know they support mods, I'm pretty dang sure they mentioned it somewhere.

Everyone owning a copy of the game: Why shouldn't they? Legally you're supposed to, and hell, it isn't that much money.

Ya, it adds up.

Then don't only play a game for 2 hours.

And if they don't like it?

Are you a christian? I mean, you share the same stubbornness as they do... And it'd make a lot of sense why you're 100% against lan and have no consideration for it ever being included no matter what anyone says.

I'm not 100% against LAN--I just think it's no big deal. I play LAN with my brother a good deal, but would just play Battle.net if it wasn't around. Please don't put words in my mouth.

Oh, and mods don't get finished for Warcraft because the editor is good enough that people are attracted to just make smaller maps.

Once you have joined a game on battle.net, you can disconnect from the internet and still have people on your LAN stay in the game (the host should stay on until the game starts though, as they need to be on for the game to show up on the game list).

So you're telling me to start the game on one computer with battle.net, then get onto battle.net with another computer, and join the game? doesn't work, never has, because I can't even log onto battle.net with the second computer. I would have to buy another game AND another internet for that to work, I DON'T HAVE KIND OF MONEY, WE DON'T EVEN HAVE CABLE dispite having 3 TVs, WE CANCELED OUR WOW ACCOUT BECAUSE $20 A MONTH WAS TO MUCH, AND YOUR TELLING ME TO SPEND, WHAT, AN EXTRA $50 A MONTH FOR THIS?!

I just realized, your telling me to do a LAN! Even though you said, explicitly, that you were going to tell me how to do it WITHOUT using LAN! I can do LAN parties on WC3 and SC1 with no trouble, with or without the Internet.

and for the record, 5 $20 games is $100, and 5 $50 games(the cheapest SC2 will be for the next 2 years) is $250! I CAN'T PAY THAT FOR ALL 7+ GAMES WITH LAN SO I CAN PLAY LAN!

As for Piracy, They should jest use the CD keys they used for WC3 and SC1.
I have 4 coppies (of the same origonal disc) of SC so I can have LAN parties, but I can only go onto battle.net with one computer, because there can only be one instance of a CD key on battle.net at any one time.
I have no problem with this.
I acualy think this is fair.

As for mods... I only care about Homeworld 2 and Team Fortress 2 mods, the rest, who cares?
Not me.

Not mention, the WorldEditor is so powerful, that mods are unecesary, just use custom maps.

You sem to be 100% against it but thats just what it seems to be...
Rather, I'm against protesting its removal over a few people for some reason not being able to connect to the internet from more than one computer in a house where multiple people use the internet.

<One internet stuff>
Seeing as this thread is the first I ever heard of only having a connection that supports one computer, I'd like to hear why you would have one of such a type.

<You're telling me to LAN stuff>
But aiding against the piracy problem.

<Just use CD keys>
They are. However, you can easily CDKey gen for Single Player/LAN, but you cannot for Battle.net.

<I use one copy of the game for LAN parties>
Why are you surprised they aren't trying to accommodate this when it's illegal in the first place?

It's only illegal if you can be penalized for it. Good luck enforcing something like this. It's just like downloading stuff "illegally"... There is no such thing as an illegal download, at least not in the States. Duplicating parts of what you download onto other systems, yeah, that's what can get you those crazy million-dollar fines. However, in the case of a LAN party, the game is indeed duplicated onto different computers at a private residence, which is handled differently than, say, a public building. A home is a single unit, thus most things that would normally be seat-based, are family-based. Only material objects such as toilets or kitchens, and a couple other exceptions, bypass this.

But there are no "family editions" of games. There is only the full package, the full "commercial license," if you will, that can be bought in stores for $50, and it's good for one machine, ever, at a time, no matter what (it's difficult to find a recent commercial game's end-user license agreement that says otherwise). However, this limit is not legally enforceable, so game developers look for other ways to prevent this. Lately, measures have gotten more strict, such as Rockstar placing gameplay annoyances into the game if it's pirated. Activision/Blizzard simply did away with LAN, permanently. No petition, or boycott, could possibly change their minds. Get over it.

Doesn't mean we should like it, though.

PerplePoot:

The "one internet issue": when I try to get a game to go online on move then one computer, the first computer gets imediately loged off. ALL the computers in my house can be online at once. All 14 of them... but not my games. Acualy, the only game I have EVER seen that could run multiple games with one internet was WOW, and that was only if several acounts were perchased.

I've never generated a CDkey, never had to.

I don't need any help with LANing, especialy aid that does not work.

Technicly, so long as I only use the copies in my house, it's legal for me use "burned" copies. Keep in mind that the origonal disk was perchased legaly at EB Games. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The CD keys was a response to another post, when I say "As for" it means I am responding to someone else, or another subject. Sorry if that was not obveus.

Firstly SC2 will be downloadable from blizzard appon release with your CDKEY like all their supported games like SC, D2, WC3 and WoW are thus no need to burn discs. Secondly it will be no CD thus once installed you can put your disc to sleep until next install (as all blizzard supported games are like SC, D2, WC3 and WoW).
Thirdly only one person being able to play at once is a bug with your network, change your router to something better or configure it differently. Both me and my brother can play in the same or different WC3 games at the same time on any battlenet server.

There are 2 main reasons why standalone LAN was removed.
1. People like me a long time ago used it to play with my brother without owning the game.
2. People use it to log into private servers without owning the game and playing on them.

Blizzard did not care shit about 1, it was 2 which peeved them. Read up about all the 100s of WC3 private servers, there are atleast 5 and 1 serious and most of them use LAN to work, as LAN servers are far more easy to shair than having to fake a battlenet one which may even need .exe hacks.

And before you argue about that, may I point out that the playing of the game on private servers is against the game user agreement and most hackers do so. Anyway, thus why LAN was removed, as people were not using it as LAN, but as WAN which was the purpose of battlenet. As they were using it through the internet anyway, then that makes no difference that they have to log into battlenet to play on LAN, wait a moment they never did play on LAN in the first place, so they an just play like they always have.

As long as blizzard does not mess around with battlenet so that you have to pay to do most stuff (like WoW or xbox live) I do not care about no LAN support. Infact I do not care if they stuff the whole damn battlenet full of adds everywhere as long as I do not have to pay to change my account name (eithor free name changes or the ability to make as many accounts as I wish) and that as far as custom games go I am not peanalized over other people (eg no stupid selling of content or restrictions).

I guess its a matter of oppinion, i prefer LAN so i signed the petition. most of your arguments i have already read. i have bought Warcraft 3, 3 times becouse of lost discs and computer crashes. my brother has bought it twice. we each own our seperate copy and the reason we want LAN is becasue our only internet is a single broadband unit we can only connect one computer at a time, even ICS does not work. that is all.

Funny, I did my instantly.

Its easy to make a account through Battle.net, so I didn't need to read it anyway. Must be a guide for those who are really confused of how Battle.net works.

Starcraft 2 should have LAN. ME and my brother pay for the game and battle eachother. Why would 1 family pay for the same game twice just to be able to use it at the same time? If Blizzard doesn't put LAN in then I'm not sure If I even want the game anymore.

Let's see... I'd be willing to buy an extra CD so we can both play. But the problem is, I'm gonna have to buy all the expansions when they come out twice. $300 just to play lan. And besides that, my internet can hardly support me playing online. And we live out in middle of nowhere. The only alternative internet is $100 a month. I seriously don't have all that money.

Well I don't think very many families will pay for the same game 2 or 3 times + the expansions 2 or 3 more times just to play LAN. Artanis186 was right- thats like $300! All Blizzard is gunna do is make the fans mad.

I suppose you should follow the terms of use of the item you purchase. If you don't like it, don't buy it, but don't complain when they try and enforce what you're supposed to do anyhow. DVDs are licensed differently and you know very well that that is an utterly retarded cop-out excuse for a justification to steal.

Since hosting is peer to peer you won't have any lag problems playing with people at your house. As for the money, then don't buy the expansions if you don't want to pay for them, or wait for the battle chest and get stuff cheap, but don't complain (as I said above) if they enforce what you're already agreeing to when you buy the software (and previous software whether you actually followed it or not).

And yeah, this is all coming from someone who has a brother, and we both independently own Warcraft III and StarCraft. Just don't buy every new game that comes out and it really isn't that hard to save up a bit.

I wonder why would Blizzard include LAN fin the first few games because they must have known what people would use it for. I'm not paying for the same game twice.

Because battle.net was not as developed and I doubt they expected so much bullshit. Either way, if you aren't paying for it twice for two people, then have fun not playing it with two people, and quite frankly I have zero sympathy for your refusal to pay people for their hard work. You wait for twelve years, cheer them on, get angry when it's delayed or something looks wrong, pretend to give them all your support, then as soon as it might involve you paying something you jump ship and complain that they aren't doing it all for your sake and without paying them your share.

Thats not ture! I'm paying for the game once but I'm just not going to buy the same game TWICE! I still want it! I'm not refusing to pay- I'm refusing to pay 100 bucks for something just to use LAN.

I'd imagine the expansions are going to be $30 each and the game itself $50, so altogether that's about $240 (including sales tax) for two complete copies of the game. Can't blizzard have a system where two people with the same internal IP can play each other? $240 is a LOT of money, and I mean a RIDICULOUS amount of money for a HS senior / college freshman (by the time the damn game comes out) to shell out on something that isn't food, water, books, or school.

That's for likely about 10 years of quality gaming and modding experience for two people, a lot of game dev experience at the end of it, paid over the course of a long time which makes the cost seem much lower, and assuming each person is a college student who pays for their siblings' stuff (which doesn't make sense because a college student wouldn't be living with their sibling anyways).

Thats not ture! I'm paying for the game once but I'm just not going to buy the same game TWICE! I still want it! I'm not refusing to pay- I'm refusing to pay 100 bucks for something just to use LAN.
As I said, I feel so sorry that you can't break the law. If you only want to play a few games on LAN, they really aren't interested in selling to you anyways.

I honestly own 3 copies of Warcraft 3. Don't you dare tell me that I have stolen from Blizzard or haven't supported them. I'm just saying that it's very family unfriendly. You cannot play a game with your family with 1 copy. It feels like buying 2 copies of Monopoly!

You just seem so fanatical about everyone buying their own copy of everything!

Can't you log into Starcraft 2 as a guest or something? I read about that somewhere. If thats the case you can just play anyway just not with somebody else on LAN.

Well, the kind of thing I'm thinking of would be close to unplayable over the internet; you'd need a real LAN. All I'm saying is Blizzard had a fucking Spawning system in the original Starcraft, so I'm wondering why they aren't making an effort to make it possible for computers close to each other to play. World in Conflict used a thing similar to what I'm thinking; why not include a disk containing a LAN-only copy of sc2 that only works when the original copy is in a LAN connection to it.

Because people then do things like have LAN parties with that, which is (I believe) one of the main reasons why it was discontinued in the first place.

Also, things like PLC and Hamachi.

But so what with people playing SC1 on LAN without having bought the game? The fact people still play the game 10 years later is quite a large achievement. And I don't think SC1 ever sold "badly". Main question that remains is: will people who otherwise pirated it now buy the game? I really doubt it, especially because they STILL can't get on LAN with a legal copy.

No, what I can see happen right now is people ditching SC2 and just sticking to starcraft 1 on lan parties. And thát's going to have quite an impact on how popular SC2 will be in 10 years from now. Hell, make it 5 years. I bet that at that point, SC2 will be kept alive by the mods, just like warcraft 3. And I can't say the popularity of the melee play of war3 is even remotely close to the popularity of SC1.

I know Starcraft 2 Needs LAN. If they have problems with people who use it to play with 1 copy over lots of Cpu's then they should just make each player enter their own CD key or login or something. Then there would be noproblem and there would still be LAN.
