Ill take a shot though anyway. If im dreadfully wrong, feel free to correct:

These are bills proposed by the US Congress.

Basically the goal is to help reduce internet piracy. The intention is good, however the manner is wrong.

If it goes through it would permit the Department of Justice to block access and support to sites that are deemed to have infringing content. This includes streaming videos you do not own, uploading music files that are not your own creation, or, of course, posting pirated software.

For example, the Hive Workshop. If people share music files for use in their cinematics, and dont own it, or how about ripped game resources. Also, if one of the "Hives" partner sites that we link to have infringing content on them. SOPA would go into effect and the following things would happen:

-The Department of Justice would require internet service providers to block The Hive.
-Search engines, such as google and bing, would be required to blacklist the Hive from their search database.
-Online payment options, such as PayPal, would be required to prevent any transactions to the site and its owners.
-Advertising Agencys would no longer be allowed to advertise on the Hive, and as such, no longer be able to pay the Hive part of the upkeep fees.

So it's a good act. It effectively murders piracy. All THW has to do is cut all connections with affiliated sites that violate this, and we're good. We don't accept game rips or any form of pirated software anyway.

YouTube, however, would go down. But that's the only site I frequent that would suffer from this.

To add on to Asomath and reply to shiik,
if a pirated site links to hiveworkshop or a member from hiveworkshop links to a pirated site, hive gets closed down, no refund at all, that means Ralle will be like wtf, even worse, he will be jailed for 5 years for breaking copyright infringement if he is in America. ACTA will affect Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada.

^ How could you miss the entire spam of SOPA threads :/ But I don't know what PIPA is, more funny abbreviations :D SOPA = SOAP opera. I feel that this thread will be merged with the big one.
PIPA = protect IP, bill passed down to senate while SOPA is passed down to the house.
I really find America very ironic, America tells China not to filter but they passed down SOPA.

Why would it be a problem if a pirate site links to us?

This site certainly will not waste time and resources on something that has no effect on it nor a large fraction of its members. Just because we speak English does not mean we are all from the US.

Even if everyone in the USA supported this movement to go on strike, it will not change a thing.

Yeah, I approve as well even though it won't really affect me for the better or worse. I've always been against piracy.

the problem isn't that it affects piracy, the problem is that the bill is so loosely worded that it lets big media companies take down pretty much any site they want just for having a link to something they consider copyright infringement

all they really have to do is go to a site, post a link to something illegal, and then the whole site can be taken down

THAT is what the problem is

Gotta say, you're right about this DSG.

You win, this time.

Fun fact: In my language, sopa means "soup", and I hate soup,
Yeah, that happens in mine too. And «pipas» are a sort of salty nuts that teenagers love buying and chewing. Pipas were really popular among teens when I was younger, but I still see them buying them from time to time.

Well, that will be under Protect IP bill passed down to the senate.
A pirated site links to hiveworkshop, hive will be in trouble, so it's a troll situation. But huge and formal companies will not be affected.
Holywood films approve of Protect IP and SOPA

Well I hope they'll correct that before/if the bill gets passed. Because those must be some really dumb politicians if they can't predict those situations will happen. Or they just don't want to think of a solution for those situations.

By the way, Ralle is not based on the US. I'm not sure where he's from anymore, but I'm positive he's not from America or any of the countries being affected by ACTA .

Ralle lives in Denmark, but my understanding is that the THW server indeed is hosted in the US. Thus, as far as being outside the zone goes, I wouldn't be so sure. If this locking down sites that violate the terms of the act applies to hosting services as well, as opposed to just those responsible for what you can access (more or less ISP), we could face having the server locked down. However, as we're not doing anything illegal here, I honestly can't see that happening. Moreover, this talk about how linking a pirate site on another site would lead to that other site getting locked down seems like a far-fetch. Not even politicians are that stupid.

At one stage THW was hosted from a server running in Ralle's bedroom. I think it is currently running from a server in the US though as part of a cost/performance improvement that was sponsored by TWIF and his generous donations.

In any case the legistlation will have no effect on us because we are a law abiding sight.

Yes, but in the case of someone posting a single illegal link here, we're history.
I say, down with SOPA and PIPA because it takes the power balance away.

They took down MegaUpload without SOPA.

It is related to the upcoming sopa.. as it happens now around it. One of the convictions against Megaupload was piracy.. I posted it on the other thread. Also Megaupload were nice unlike IDIOT FileFactory,Hotfile, Filesonic and other shiity sites wait 15-20-50 minutes OR become premium! ... So Megaupload was nice and could've stayed - I wanna see the other shitty sites going down

Also it is not supposed to affect everyone who has uploaded smth, we talk about millions blillions of people are you kidding?.. They are gonna punish the owners, staff etc.

What am I reading? MegaUpload had waiting times and also advertised their premium membership on every corner of the website. Are you mixing it up with MediaFire?

Also, they took it down without the powers SOPA would give them. That's what I meant.

Mediafire is the BEST of all existing out there, no download waits, it is just the coolest, I liked it the most, then I placed Megaupload..

@ EroticSideburns Megaupload allows you only 1 file at a time but you have to wait 45 seconds before each, other silly sites require you 15 minutes 1 hour 2 hours when you d; a few files.. and megaupload in the last years does max 45 second wait.

Mediafire is ofc the best as it is free of all the crap.

Well, the sad part about this is that these websites are mainly being used to pass non-copyrighted files around between people (especially those too large to email), as mirrors and sometimes the only download link for your content.

What we need is another terrorist attack on the US.
That should get the US Congress to see how we in the Middle East feel about this. (Yes, piracy is even practiced by large companies themselves in the Middle East).

edit
Oh and it's funneh

The new soon-to-be president is a reptilian humanoid in human skin... shoot at the right side to get his heart. They have it reversed.
