There were a lot of good entries for this one, it's a tough choice.

I liked Banana's, AR's, and Friky's the most. Friky's didn't suit wc3 as well as the others though. Banana's ax was more badass, and so he got my vote.

Hard choice: Comments on each:

LiOneSS: interesting, nicely done, but the green looks like green plasma stuff from video games dunno didn't like that part that much. 7.6/10

Volvox: Too dark, not really for warcraft, but still interesting. 5.5/10

Friky: Great job, awesome axe, I can't complain much. 8.9/10

Eleneai: It is okay, but it reminds me too much of WoW. Still I don't find the sword much good or logical with all the stuff on it. 7.3/10

Ike_ike: Interesting, the blade was supreme but the skin kinda kills it. 6/10

Huinipachutli: Interesting for a specific map, however not so interesting for warcraft. 4.9/10

Technomancer: Same problem as Huini, however yours seems clearer and better. 5.3/10

Air Head: Not much, seems like a first icon work. 4/10

The Silent: Well interesting, but I don't find it to fit warcraft good. 5/10

Anemic Royalty: Awesome job, this is pure warcraft, this is just perfect. 9.3/10

bananaHUNT: Wow same as A.R, just like warcraft, fits for orcs, this is great. 9.5/10

Just_Spectating: So out of warcraft :/ 4/10

Goos: Not bad, however nothing too good. 6/10

bananaHUNT has my vote.

They're all freaking awsome, really =)
However, I personally liked Friky, Eleanai and GooS' icons best. Since I can only choose one, I choose to vote for GooS' icons. I really liked the armor, althought not so much the weapons. the armor had really nice and powerful colors. Eleanai has some really good things as ever before, but they just strike me as kind of out of the Wc3 theme. Frikiy's icons are really well made, but they don't quite give the Blizzard feel of the icons.

So can the contestants vote as well? If so my vote goes to A.R. I really liked Elenai's, Friky and Goos's upgrades as well but A.R. beat them on Blizzard feeling imo.

Of course. You just can't vote for yourself. ;P

ps: why is this contest called Phoenix Trial by the way :p
From what I know, it was something Daelin did back when he used to host these or something. It's more of a tradition than anything. Like how the spell contests are still called "Zephyr" for some reason.

VOTE: AnemicRoyalty/AR - Trolls

Alright. Personally, this all comes down between FrIkY, ike_ike, AnemicRoyalty, and bananaHUNT. Simply amazing work, both from the "original" aspect (giving to races that didn't have upgrades) and from the Blizzard-feel aspect (all did very well).

Further, I say AR and banana are my Top 2. Unfortunately for bananaHUNT, AR has the edge IMO; he did a race that doesn't have upgrades (the axe/shield are great, but pretty Orcish/bandit-y). Oh yeah, and I freakin' love Trolls. Thank you. :p

So yeah. My vote goes towards AnemicRoyalty. Great job, all involved.

--EDIT--
Honorable Mention goes to Huinipatchilsas (sp?), because even of the few who do Goblin-stuff, it seems no one touches the "Economic/Greedy" aspect of them. Yeah!

Here's my judgement on the icons. It's some damn though opposition, most of these are masterworks, matching (some even taking over) Blizzard quality. I didn't vote. I couldn't decide which one I like the most.

Lio: Very creative usage of iconing. I see a lot of differences between the icons, needless to say, all high-quality. Very nice job.

Volvox: I can see work in it, but not enough. They are like...all the same. Those wooden parts are too blurry, but hey... I know the majority of details get lost during resizing. They are good individually, but most of the others here pwn it.

Firky: That's what I call damn professional. The armor classes could have used more variation though. Good work, nevertheless.

Elenai: Awesome. Very good and creative work. I love those swords.

ike: Professional work. However, I don't really like the armor upgrades to tell the truth. They look too alike, only some minor details are changed besides the colors.

Huinipachutli: Good, but not the best. You fell into the resizing quality loss trap too. They are very good individually, but not I'm not sure they'd do well as a contest submission.

Technomancer: HD quality, you have epic aura-making skills. They somehow give out a negative and empty feeling, but scratch that. Good work.

Airhead: I don't like them. The quality is way behind the other submissions.

The Silent: Good work, and helluva useful for modding. The only problem is that you didn't make enough changes concerning the armor upgrades.

A.R.: You have skills, but they aren't the best. Would do well in-game, but not for the contest :/

bananaHUNT: Definately high quality, I like the quality of the change between the icons, the only problem is there aren't enough. Also, the idea is far from original.

Just_Spectating: Very good. The weapons are fucking awesome, the armor upgrades are good too, but not the best. Might be just me, but the masks are kinda awkwardly placed. The quality is guaranteed though, they are very well detailed. You've also made sufficient changes between the icons, and I'm sure they are very useful.

GooS: You are talented. There aren't enough changes between the icons, but they are very good as individuals.

Reasoning:

Before anything, most faults I state here are ones that can collectively be found in my submission.

All are sweet icons to say the least, at first my thought was Elenai's submission, which are unique in their way, but they don't fit in a regular wc3 map and I would like some more glows and that they fade all the way to black in the background. They are a piece of art but not one that fits within wc3 bounds as I see it.

And so I went on to the marine ones, original: yes, has the upgrading feeling: yes, but they did not keep up in the quality and detail some submissions had in this contest, the gauss rifle one is a great work, and when resized to 64x64 the tiny flaws are insignificant, but the armor needs refining. (Sweet ass fire on the rifle btw)

Then my thoughts went to the troll ones, but they felt empty in some way, the shield (if that is what it is) felt small, more like a charm, a small trinket, not something that could physically protect you. The rules didn't say it had to be physical protection but by all the other submissions that was what I was looking for. They also were not very original, maybe icon wise but they are a very common Troll concept.

So on to the pandaren ones, the armor is magnificent in every tier, and one can feel the power increase, with it being pandaren ones, none can say they don't fit as there are no previous ones, they are unique. But the weapon ones feel empty, and when reaching the third tier it felt as if the artist gave up, was out of ideas or time was getting short cus it has none of the detail put into the other icons, the lighting makes less sense and the blade seems plain and dull.

My winner is bananaHUNT, not very unique, but made with such care, some people may not reason this way but what you see in an icon gives you the feeling of size that the represented object is. As said about the troll shield, it doesn't give the feeling of protecting, but this one certainly does, it covers almost the full iconspace even though it only shows 1/4 of the object. and the axe feels the right size relative to the shield making them a beautyful combo, with a gorgeous glow and spectacular detail.

If anyone feels that I've wronged them or their icons bash my ones down ;)

FrIkY, A.R, thebananaHUNTING person, and GooS' were definitely a cut above the rest. In terms of originality, though, I think only FrIkY did something that deviated from the standard WC3 designs.

So FrIkY gets my vote.

In terms of sheer WC3 style, bananaramaHUNT would get the vote, and comparing nothing but skill, A.R would certainly win. I think your troll icons are actually sharper than standard Blizzard icons ._.

DAMIT! so hard to vote D:

A.R = Friky = The_Silent = BananaHunt

A.R,s concept is awesome, but i really don't like the armor.

Friky's concept is awesome, but the 1 and the 2 tier of the weapond is less cool D:

The_Silent's concepts is original and awesome, but they all look alike.. D:

BananaHunt's concept is awesome, but doesn't really works together.. Human axe vs Orc shield D:

i'm so confused.. D;

Friky vs Bananahunt i would say now..

and i'm screwed
