Patch 1.31.1 Backup Files

Hello everyone,
I currently have both 1.29 and 1.31.1, but when I open 1.31.1 Frozen Throne there is a small bug. Aside from the disabled "Battle.net" button, there is no Reforged update notification (you know: A small window with the message "An update is available" and the two options to open the Launcher and return to game without update).
Some people have this kind of message every time the game is launched like this one, but I don't have this message upon starting 1.31.1. (NOT PTR).
However, the update notification appears if I accidentally hit "Local Area Network", which brings out the Bonjour installation message.
On 1.29, this notification doesn't appear but the "Battle.net" button doesn't greyed out.
Is this bug normally occurs? I uploaded 2 screenshots to compare the issue (First one is from 1.31.1 and the second is from 1.29).
Thanks.

I would say the 1.31 as a whole is weird. I sometimes don't get the notification for the update, sometimes does. It goes to the point I went 'meh, as long as I can play'.

Yep. I don't even get this update notification every time upon starting the game if the version is 1.31.1. Same thing for 1.30.4.
However, I decided to install 1.29 because I played offline custom games for about 1.5 years and also for editing my melee maps.
Also, latest DOTA maps (6.88-7.00) aren't working on 1.31.1. because many peoples encountered crash problem when loading the map, but older maps like DOTA 6.85k or DOTA 6.83d (the latter is the latest official one by Icefrog without modifications) are still working without issues. I think all DOTA maps are only intended for 1.26 due to the memory hack ability.

Well, considering that the most likely reason to use 1.31.1 or other legacy version is to avoid updating to Reforged, should we even call it a bug? :)

But to answer your question - I'm using 1.31.1 and I've been seeing the update pop-up. I think the button was active too, but I didn't really pay too much attention to it, so I'm not sure. Testing it now, the button is greyed out and I didn't get the update prompt. I don't know what it's all about, but then - I haven't noticed any other issues with the game, so if that's the only bug you're getting, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

thank you so much
You're welcome <3

I think there was one more post, now gone, about the game freezing when exiting/winning a map, which I couldn't reply to at the time and then kinda forgot - tested it on a custom campaign map just now and I haven't experienced any issues.

This is semi-random, and seem to occur with maps that are high in trigger and have lots of leaks. I haven't seen this happening to Melees at the very least.

Oh... Sadly, that's not something I could ever hope to come up with a solution to. Hopefully that's more of a mild annoyance rather than something that fundamentally prevents a person from being able to progress through, for instance, a campaign?

Yeah, it's not a bug but assuming the game version you are using is 1.30.2 or higher (like 1.30.4 or 1.31.1), sometimes you'll get "An update is available" message for Reforged.
The older versions like 1.27b or 1.29 will only update to Reforged if you click on "Battle.net" button (since it was still enabled).
When I click on "Local Area Network", it will ask for Bonjour and when it said the installation was failed it displayed "An update is available". Sounds like a strange bug, but I managed to block "Warcraft III.exe" through Windows Firewall Outbound Rules.

There is a thread already.
Warcraft 3 Black Screen Bug
Well, it's just a kind of memory leaking issue, but just to be clear:
1.If I played the game for a very long time about 15 minutes (or watch replays), then immediately end (either using Quit Mission or Quit Game), the game freezes.
2.If I played the game for a short time (about only a couple of seconds), then immediately end with the same trick, it does work.
3.The bug only occurs on 1.31.1 and when the bug is happened, there is nothing to do with me except logging out or restarting my computer. Even clicking on "X" icon after Alt+Tabbing out of the game or using Task Manager doesn't help this problem.

It's better that that Battle.net is disabled because you won't accidentally update to 1.32 which defeats the purpose of these backup files, and the Bonjour installation message is fully unconnected to the Battle.net - you should install Bonjour because that's just the system 1.30+ uses for Local Area Network games list.

Oh... Sadly, that's not something I could ever hope to come up with a solution to. Hopefully that's more of a mild annoyance rather than something that fundamentally prevents a person from being able to progress through, for instance, a campaign?
Never reached such conditions for me.

Okay, so I've experienced that "freeze after playing a map" issue.

The good news is that it doesn't stop the campaign progression, so even if you get the freeze and thus have to force-exit the game, you should still be able to go back and play the next chapter just like nothing happened. The bad news is that it is in fact pretty annoying.

I've checked the map I've had this in and it does indeed have a lot of leaks, so @Daffa might be right about this being the issue. I'll probably attempt to test this issue further, either with the map I've had it in or another one. Once I do, I'll add my findings below.

For now, I'm adding a disclaimer to the first post that such issues exists.

Thanks for giving me a report, but now I decided to stay on 1.29.2 for playing custom maps.
Luckily, I also have 1.31.1 in case I want to play custom campaigns but I never use save-load feature because of trigger bug.

You're welcome. As for which version you use - that's up to you, though personally I think that given all the bugs that 1.31.1 appears to have, it's probably best reserved just for maps/campaigns that were made specifically for it.

---

Okay, so after hurting my soul with a terribly leaky trigger, which I later fixed, I can say that the problem does in fact seem connected to leaks. Were I to speculate, I'd say that there must be something wrong with garbage collection upon closing the game, though that's obivously just a guess.

Added a disclaimer and a "potential fixes" point to the first post.

I'm trying that method now, but there seems to be no way to access any wrapper versions or engines. I can't even get onto the Wineskin site. What a headache...

Sadly, I have no idea how to solve this problem.
I'm also pointing out that older macOS (I think version BELOW 10.15 or 11) DOESN'T support most recent Warcraft 3 patches.
You can try an older version of Warcraft III using the link below if you are using older macOS:

Hey everyone, pardon me for asking but does anyone faced any crashes while playing custom maps in the 1.31 patch. It is because I undergo a lot of crashes while playing and I was wondering if there is any solution that can fix it. The map I am playing is recommended for that patch only . Please help :")

There are quite a few broken things recently in custom maps and campaigns when you play with this version. I'm pointing out that anything that caused a game crashing is related to memory leak issue (which also does the black screen problem). Maps such as Good & Evil II Between Worlds seems to be unstable on 1.31 due to this, along with the famous broken gameplay caused by save-load thingy. As a result, this map is only playable without problem on 1.30. You can check the link here to find a possible solution on how to remove the memory leak issue.
Also, if the campaigns you are playing are recommended for 1.31 such as Warcraft III Alternate Campaign or Malfurion's Quest, then your only choice to solve this issue is by force exiting the game completely, though it doesn't affect the campaign progression.

Hi, Guys.
Thanks for posting this.! I'm not really good at this tech stuff, so i apologize if my "lingo" is incorrect. :)

When playing this patch, I can't get to play full screen. (not just the menu screen. In game as well!)
I've read the entire thread, and could only see one other person with this issue, but couldn't see any resolutions to the problem.?

Hope someone can help :)

Have you tried running the game with "-windowmode fullscreen"?
You can also switch between Fullscreen and Windowed by going through the Video Settings.
The main menu was still made in 4:3 format (with two black bars) as of 1.29, but in game it will be in correct format with two backends on top and bottom.

For the newer versions (1.29+), there are multiple ways to change the windowmode: specifying arguments when launching the game: for 1.31+ -windowmode windowed, -windowmode windowedfullscreen, or -windowmode fullscreen, pressing alt+enter (only switches between windowed and windowedfullscreen) and changing mode from video settings.
The integrated video mode and those arguments are just a new feature from 1.31, but for the arguments they used the "-nativefullscr", "-fullscreen" and
"-window" for the older versions instead of the usual "-windowmode" argument.
One can also run the game with DirectX or OpenGL by using "-graphicsapi" argument (Direct3D9 for DirectX, OpenGL2 for OpenGL).
Detailed information can be found here (check the first post).

This is the 1.31.1 patch files thread so I provided arguments accordingly. The graphicsapi arguments you listed are also mostly correct but if I remember correctly it's not graphicsapi OpenGL2 but just graphicsapi OpenGL for opengl in 1.31, you can also get the arguments changes from 1.31+ in the command line part of its patch notes here or here.

Thank you for providing me a detailed information.
It seems that "-graphicsapi OpenGL2" and "-graphicsapi OpenGL3" have been merged into "-graphicsapi OpenGL" since this patch came out.
Btw, I don't know if "-graphicsapi Direct3D9" and "-graphicsapi OpenGL" are likely removed in the future, as described on the Patch Notes.

I don't remember the current state in 1.32.10.X but you can still use the opengl one at least afaik, but probably not the direct3d versions older than 11
I heard that Blizzard might drop Direct3D 11 in the future for Reforged (probably after Diablo 2 Resurrected goes live), but this is just a rumor. It won't be happened maybe. Same thing for OpenGL, even though most games are now using Vulkan.

Greetings,

After Warcraft III: Reforged launched, some people like myself either updated to the latest version by mistake or regretted doing so afterwards. Since Blizzard removed patch installers from Battle.Net, the option to go back to an older version was effectively lost. The purpose of this thread is to help with this problem. Below you will find a backed up version of the 1.31.1 installation. This will allow you to revert to the last patch before Reforged, but know that this is a purely singleplayer version.

THIS IS NOT A FREE OR PIRATE VERSION OF WARCRAFT III.
YOU NEED A VALID, LEGAL CD-KEY TO RUN THIS.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR USE THESE FILES IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE.

Due to the above, I will not be offering any assistance in circumventing proper activation and any tips or questions about this will be immidiately reported to site moderation. If Blizzard Entertainment or Hive Workshop staff takes issue with this thread, please contact me and I'll remove all download links without delay.

WARNING!
This version has a couple of significant bugs, one of which is particularly annoying - after playing a map, the game may freeze when trying to exit the score screen. Based on various reports (thanks @Ravager16829, @Daffa, @OutsiderXE) and personal testing, this seems connected to the map containing a lot of leaks, but it doesn't appear to impede the ability to play or progress through custom campaigns.

That said, as there is no known solution to this issue other than force-exiting the game (or editing maps to remove leaks, which can be cumbersome and requires some map editing knowledge, which not everyone has), I'd generally recommend using another version such as 1.30.4 or 1.29.2 (LINK) and reserving 1.31.1 only for playing maps or campaigns that were made specifically for it.

1. Recommended:

Game client - one file (1.89 GB): Link (MediaFire)

2. Alternative links:

Game client - older upload (1.94 GB): Link (MEGA) or Link (Hive)

Game client - split into 250 MB parts:
Part #1 - Link. Part #2 - Link. Part #3 - Link. Part #4 - Link.
Part #5 - Link. Part #6 - Link. Part #7 - Link. Part #8 - Link.

--- --- ---
ADDITIONAL FILES
--- --- ---

a) Language Fix: Link (Google Drive)
- this .reg file will fix the problem with the game using your OS language, it might also resolve stuttering problems.

b) Cleaned up files: Link (Google Drive)
- these files were removed from the older download, you most likely won't need them.

--- --- ---
HOW TO INSTALL
--- --- ---

1. It is recommended that you uninstall Warcraft III: Reforged or any other version of the game and delete the Warcraft III folder from the Program Files (x86) directory first as having both versions of the game installed might cause issues.

OPTIONAL - I've also chosen to remove all Warcraft III related registry keys. It's better to do this as the game will re-create all needed keys anyway and having leftover/shared keys with other versions might cause problems, but it's up to you whether you want to do it or not. If you do, here's how:

  • Press Windows Key + R, type in "regedit" (without quotes) and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  • In the Registry Editor, nagivate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment.
  • The folders I removed were called "Classic Launcher", "Warcraft III" and "WorldEdit".

OPTIONAL - I've also chosen to delete these folders:

I don't think that's necessary, but I wanted to make sure that no leftoever data from Reforged interferes with classic. It's up to you whether you want to do this or not, but if you do - be sure to back up any saves or maps.

2. Download the client from the links above, unzip it using any compression software you want (e.g. WinRar or 7zip). You will see a "Warcraft III" folder. Move it to your Program Filex (x86) folder. If you downloaded the version split into parts - make sure you have all parts in the same directory, right click on the first one and choose your desired unpacking option from the context menu.

3. Run the game and then the editor using these files:

4. You should see a window asking to either enter your CD-KEY or login to Battle.Net. Choose the first option, enter your CD-KEY and confirm. The game should launch.

5. This version it doesn't need any extra patches either from Blizzard or 3rd party sites. Applying such updates might cause the it to not work.

--- --- ---
OPTIONAL INSTALLATION STEPS
--- --- ---

1. Language Fix:

  • The game might launch using the language of your operating system. It worked fine for me, though other users reported stuttering.
  • The reason why the language changes is due to to missing registry files. To solve that issue, download the Language Fix registry file from the link above and run it. It will ask you for confirmation. Click yes. This will automatically add the registry files and set the language of your game to English.

2. Cleaning up or restoring the older upload:

  • This is only meant for people who either downloaded the older version (i.e. one that weights 1.94 GB) and would like to reduce their installation size or used the newer version (i.e. one that weights 1.89 GB) and found some issues that didn't happen in the older version.
  • To restore the older version, download the cleaned up files from the link above, unpack the archive and copy the files to your Warcraft III directory.
  • To clean the older version, delete all folders in your Warcraft III directory except "Data", "x86" and "x86_64" and all files except ".build.info", ".patch.result" and ".product". Your folder should look like this:

3. Preventing the game from being updated to 1.32+:

- The first time you launch the Battle.Net app after setting up W3, immidiately switch to W3 and check if it hasn't started updating. If it has, instantly pause it using the button to the right of the progress bar. Just to be safe, regardless whether you paused the update or not, go to Settings -> Game Install/Update -> select "Never automatically apply updates" to disable automatic updates.

--- --- ---
POTENTIAL FIXES TO PROBLEMS
--- --- ---

1. I get errors while trying to unpack the archive:

- If you trying unpacking directly to Program Files (x86), Windows might block the program from doing so.
  • Unpack the archive in another directory (e.g. where it was saved when you downloaded it) and then move the Warcraft III folder to Program Files (x86) directory manually.
  • I used 7zip to create this archives, if you experience any further issues, you might try using it for decompression as well.

2. The CD-KEY window doesn't appear or appears completely black:

- Try clicking a couple times in the inner left part of the window.
  • Close the window and run Warcraft III.exe (in the x86_x64 folder) as admin.
  • Uninstall other versions of Warcraft III and remove all Warcraft 3 and/or Blizzard registry entries.
  • Rename the installation folder to something else.
  • Try launching the game through the Warcraft III Launcher.exe file (in the Warcraft III folder) as admin. You will need to restore the older version (see above) to try this.

3. Graphics or performance issues (e.g. stuttering):

- Add -graphicsapi Direct3D9 at the end of the shortcut target, as explained by @loktar - link.
  • Try downloading and applying the Language Fix file listed above. Be mindful that this will change your game language to English.
  • You might also want to to check out this post by @grimgrents - link.

4. Maps/campaigns aren't visible in game:

- If maps or campaigns that you are using were saved in 1.32 (Reforged), they won't work.
- Make sure that your maps and campaigns are located in appropriate folders. If the folders don't exist, create them yourself, watching out for potential typos.

Folder paths and names are as follows - these are case sensitive, i.e. the folders must be named exactly as below, including which letters are big/small:

- If you still cannot see a map or a campaign in game and neither of the above doesn't help, there's sadly no known solutions to that problem. Feel free to either post the map file in the thread or send it to me directly via a PM. I'm not promising that I will find a solution, but I can at least try.

5. World Editor is crashing/not working:

- Press Windows Key + R, type in "regedit" (without quotes) and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  • In the Registry Editor, nagivate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment.
  • Delete the "WorldEdit" folder.

- If you're using both 1.31 and 1.32, this issue might reoccur and can require repeating these steps.

6. Test map is crashing:

- Work around to this issue is explained in this post by @grimgrents - link.

7. Freeze / black screen when exiting the score screen:

This is most likely caused by the map containing a lot of leaks. Sadly, there's no known solution to that problem other than opening maps and fixing memory leaks, so I'd generally recommend using another version (e.g. 1.30.4 or 1.29.2 - LINK) if possible.

If you're forced to use 1.31.1, because the map requires it, your options are:

a) Force-exit the game (what worked best for me was quickly clicking inside the game window once it freezes so Windows displays the "the application is not responding pop-up, giving you an option to close the game, but you can also try using the Task Manager [CTRL+ALT+DELETE] to terminate the process, logging out of your Windows account or even restarting the PC). If you're worried about losing campaign progress - it shouldn't happen.

b) Ask the map maker to fix their map / campaign or you can attempt to do this yourself, given you have pretty basic modding knowledge - read this thread to find out more about leaks (LINK) then edit map(s) to remove them, looking especially for triggers with periodic (i.e. every x.x seconds) events.

--- --- ---
DISCLAIMER
--- --- ---

Using the method described above allowed me to restore the original 1.31.1 Classic client, but since it's not an official installer, I cannot guarantee that it will work for you too. Also, I've only done this on a 64-bit Windows 10 system. No idea if or how it would work on other Windows versions.

If you're going to use this - I hope it works just as fine for you as it did for me. Good luck :)
First of all Thank you for this link but i might have a problem here when i play campaign or maps i cannot use the mouse to scroll freely its actually i cant move the screen freely having any solution for this perhaps.

Might be related to the graphics or performance issue. If this is right, then this solution might be helpful:

Okay, here is the picture:

Keep in mind this trick won't solve the problem for you (I'm not even sure if it's the same issue I had), but worth a try.

There is a solution in case you want to install the original game (even if you have Reforged). You'll still need a CD-Key, but be warned: World Editor doesn't work properly (you'll have to delete registry first):
Patch 1.31.1 Backup Files
Keep in mind 1.31 only requires Reign of Chaos CD-KEY as it comes with Frozen Throne expansion by default, older versions will most likely require you to have both ROC and TFT keys. Furthermore, you can only play Reforged using SD Mode (Classic).

Hello I need a huge help I installed Reforged but when I run its keep showing error what can i do
Please provide your screenshot or exact error message here to better understand the problem.
Also, since you are asking about Reforged (and this thread is for Classic Warcraft 3, mainly 1.26-1.31), this is not a place for you.

Damn, what an idiot I am... I had CDs with a CD-Key in their CDs. But threw it out because my laptop does not have a drive to accept disks. Including the fact that when I installed game the BattleNet from the official website, the game still persistently suggested switching to Reforge or not installing at all. And so, missing the custom campaigns, I find this and sigh with great disappointment... I shouldn't have thrown it away, really shouldn't.
On the other hand, there is another question. If this is NOT a pirated version of the game, then how does BattleNet work? Are there players or is this game only playable in single player, campaigns and custom campaigns?

Read this:

Also, read this (the official patch notes for 1.31):
Dev Comment: We’ve been encountering non-trivial issues connecting players over Battle.net 155 as we unify the game client - a prime example being disconnects caused by erroneous matches between Chaos and Throne. Custom maps created with RoC data are still playable, this affects melee only. A major benefit to this change is players who owned Reign of Chaos only now have The Frozen Throne.
At this point, if you still want to play online without Reforged, you'll need to look for other servers. Radmin VPN and Eurobattle.net are a good options to go.

First off, if you were ever able to install from the site, the keys are present in your games section: https://account.blizzard.com/games, which will allow you to just get the cd-keys needed.
Second off, Battle.net does not work because it only ever accepts the latest version, I do not think anyone advertised that it did.

Hopefully this is enough to get you back on track of playing 1.31, good luck

Yes, there are lots of bugs that you might encounter on 1.31. The most notorious one was Save-Load Bug and Black Screen.
Also, if you talk about Low FPS and how to correct this problem, you can still read the solution below:

Unfortunately 1.31.1 is the only version that Blizzard had for Classic. You can also download other versions of WC3 using this link below:
