Incorrect Categorisation

I often search models by categories and often I find that many of the models are incorrectly placed into some categories.

In particular I am referring to the categories of 'unit' and 'hero'. A unit is a unit, these guys are often produced en mass and are distinguished from heroes by their decay animations and lack of hero glow. Heroes on the other hand have a hero glow (I don't think a glow is too important as it is easy to import an attachment) and a dissipate animation.

This model is marked only as a unit but it is actually a hero - it has a dissipate and no decay.

This model, this model, and this model are marked both as a hero and as a unit but they have no decay animations - they should be marked only as heroes.

There are very many of these models. I wanted to ask is this an oversight? Or are these categories unimportant and not worth the effort to keep them pure?

Almost everyone tries to add as much categories as possible when uploading a new model, thinking so it would show up on more search results, and thus possibly get used more.
Its annoying however when an hero with clearly nightelven design comes up among the search results when searching with categories unit and bloodelf, or if you find an tree when searching for an item.

I've encountered this problem as well. This is one of those problems where you need the manpower to go through an entire section with the patience of the likes I haven't seen since I did something similar with VGsatomi when we introduced the Footman Frenzy category to Maps in 2005.

I wouldn't miss mentioning the oddness of race categories too. Tauren are minority in Tauren category and Nerubians aren't doing much better either or Panderans.

However if you take this stance the problem still persists as the 'hero' category is not exactly filled with exclusively hero models. The models marked as hero but include neither a hero glow nor a dissipate animation include (on the first 10 pages of the approved models):

There is also a whole bunch of tanks but I am not so certain about my judgement in regards to them so I won't mention it. The problem is evident enough either way.

Furthermore, I have scoured the approved tauren unit section for any culprits of improper categorisation and found several models that have very little to do with taurens indeed:

Seems in case of units some in tauren category because tauren are part of the Orc race so Ogre, Orcs and Goblins end up there. While missiles and items are usually placed under everything.

There are also Twilight Enforcers, Goblin Demolisher, Dozer. Baron Dark/Iceclaw is under tauren too and every other race. That is regarding units/heroes but VoidSkullAura_v5, Ambushed Human Caravan, HouseVar01 and things like that also are not tauren related.

Oh god, what a mess. I will have to make a tool that makes it easy to re-categorise a butt load of resources at once. I know it's not much help now, but I am planning on having checkboxes in place to require team glow and team color. I would like to also extend that to animation names. So you could require a 'decay' animation. I know this does not fix type/category but combined with the tool it could help cleaning up the type/categories afterward.

Do you think we should differentiate between hero and unit? I mean so a hero is not a unit and a unit is not a hero?

Yeah I've had issues with this for a while, especially for race-related models.
Like searching For Orc->Unit I get these models included in the list..

I don't think you should. You should get a willing group of people to go through the entire section and do that work. If memory serves, your custom resource permissions system allows you to specify exactly what a privileged user can change about a resource, so you could assign a few fellows and give them the power to change categories and types (I'd be up for the job on my free time during the Summer! ;D). You don't even need to put them in the Moderators group if I recall correctly.

The issue is where lies the boundary, indeed. Personally, I'd be looking for a model with dissipate animation and hero glow.

I remember having the idea for the model section where a user could use checkboxes to specify optional parts of the model to download, which actually goes well with your definition of bundles.

Say a model M has the following animations: stand-1, stand-2, stand-3, spell, dissipate. It also has 2 custom skins to choose from and an icon. The user can choose to download only stand-1, stand-2. the spell animation and the associated icon for the model, but opt not to download the hero glow or the skins.

Or he could choose to automatically attach a hero glow to a model that doesn't have one! This is flexible! :smile:

Right now there exists 2 distinct categories for heroes and units. If they are exactly the same than one of them is redundant. If units are a general term of both heroes and units then heroes should, in order to avoid being redundant, be exclusive to hero units.

So to keep both the categories useful I believe you can either:
1) say that all heroes are units but not all units are heroes
or
2) heroes and units are distinct classes based on their animations (a model can then be both a hero and a unit if it has both dissipate and decay, like some models do).

Like I mentioned in the first post I personally tend to favour the second way of looking at it.

When i look for an hero model i want it to have:
hero glow,
dissipate anim,
preferably more than one spell anim,
slightly higher resolution textures and at an better geometry than the rest of units.
If has 1 and 2 then it means i can use as hero without having to edit it. <- The purpose of hero category to exist.
3 and 4 ofcourse arent mandatory but are always nice to have.

I have noticed this problem for years, but didn't really say anything. Glad it's being looked at.

As for the Hero/Unit distinction, I might've once thought it was very clear (I particularly like what Makoodzaka said above), but now I'm not so sure. Take, for example, Direfury's 'recent' barrage(s) of models; nearly all of them have both Decay and Dissipate anims, and optional/removable Hero Glow!

I believe I managed to categorize the rest with same rules Eagle XI. Models with Decay are Units; Models with Dissipate are Heroes (some do lack hero glow); Model with Dissipate and Decay are both.

"Both" category does need a bit of extra work for users. Either attaching or removing hero glow depending of the role they intend to use model. Special mention goes to Franksters shining tanks.

My position on this matter is that people who are looking for a model to use for a unit may still find a hero model useful, but people looking for a model to use for a hero are not going to find a unit model useful (unless the unit model is of an appropriate style and scale to use as a hero, in which case tagging it with both hero and unit makes sense).

However, when it comes to tauren-tagged units that are clearly not tauren, etc, this is clear abuse of the category system in attempt to greedily obtain more traffic. Obvious and undeniable abuse of the category system should be punished with very minor (-1) negreps and categories should be fixed to be relevant by moderators or administrators. Of course, since a lot of people abuse this, we don't want everyone getting neg-repped all over the place, so it would probably be a good idea to start each person out with a warning and only negrep them for repeated offenses.

I noticed this issue before but never really thought to do anything about it. I have no authority of course, but in the future, when I see people abusing the category system, I'll mention that in my reviews (but it won't affect my review, of course; I'll just scold them for it before or after the review, even if I like the resource).

By the way, the category "Miscellanous / Other" should be spelled "Miscellaneous / Other", with an 'e'. I'll spell it the way it's already spelled on the site in this post, though, to avoid confusion.

Here are some models that are incorrectly categorized. Some of the ones with less races associated with them I will leave out of this list, however ones that have way too many races attached to them or races that are completely unfitting will be listed. I must say that I was quite saddened to see so find so many modellers that I respected, and even moderators, are abusing the system. I noticed that as I traveled through the pages, every single model in the last several pages was properly tagged. So it's obviously not too hard for people to understand how to tag their models; it's simply a matter of the people within the community becoming more self-absorbed and greedy for attention as the years passed. One particular moderator, I noticed, abused the category system on all of his resources. To anyone who responds with "Accusations without proof! You're a liar!", I am not providing proof for two reasons. One, I'm trying to fix a problem and stop this problem from occuring in the future, not get people punished for their past mistakes, so saying who that moderator is and what they've done is not my goal. And two, I'm definitely not trying to get banned.

Items/Attachments/Effects/Doodads/Misc (70) that are improperly categorized:
I'll list these by their name, followed by their categories. These could all be categorized as Miscellaneous/Other, since they aren't part of any race. I'm not blaming some of these people, as I can understand how they may see their effect as associated with different races, but people who search for a race are not looking for effects; effects can be used appropriately for pretty much any race's abilities. People who search for a specific race are going to be looking for unit, hero, and building models. Of course people could still label their attachments and doodads appropriately with a couple of races, but the following are simply using way too many and for the sake of being easier for moderators to change, could all be changed to Misc/Other to make the work easier, since this category is appropriate for all of them anyway. I will be leaving out those which could debateably be associated with all of their tags, however I will be listing those with several tags that clearly do not fit.

Oh, and for anyone with complaints along the lines of "Why didn't you provide sources for other issues you pointed out, but you took the time to provide sources for this? You must be a liar!" To this, I reply that I didn't want to waste my time searching for proof for the other issues because they did not affect me; I simply thought it worth pointing them out. This particular problem, however, affects me as well as the majority of the community as it makes searching for resources more difficult for everyone.

I will consider looking through the other sections in the future as well.

But many of them have names like sword and shield. Are you sure of of them should not be attachments?

Attachment is a Type, not a Category. I am talking about the categorization, on the left, which is what many people abuse to have their resources be seen by many people. The Type, on the right, is pretty straightforward and is usually followed. Yes, many heroes and units are typed as both heroes and units, however this is because many models are fitting for both heroes and units; it's the categorization, on the left, which is about races and themes, which people abuse to have their model show up in every search. I believe that the abuse of Categorizations is just as deserving if not more deserving of being dealt with than the abuse of the Types. Not to mention that the title of this thread implies the misuse of categorization. I'm not sure where that got mixed up.

If I feel like taking the time to do so, I'll go through again and look for models that also abused the Types section of categorization, but there's no guarantees; I help when I feel like it. I used to commit myself to my hobbies, but I've realized that if I force myself to do something when I do not already feel like doing it, it will reduce the odds of me wanting to do it in the future, and I'm here for the long-term; I don't want to burn myself out.

Now we're at it.
Would it be an idea to have a max limit on the amount of keywords a model can have?
So only the, let's say 5, most explaining words can be used?

Because I'm guessing that typing;
"tauren, orc, undead, night elf, human, murloc, dwarf, spongebob, hero, unit, male, female, light, dark, blue, green, red, pink, rainbow"

In the keyword section, will mess the search system up as well?

These weren't tags, these were categories, which is even worse; SFX and attachment models really only belong in 1-2 categories, and unit models, depending on the theme, could get away with 2-5 categories.

Tags, however, shouldn't be limited too much, because some models can legitimately be tagged with quite a lot of tags that do indeed fit the model. For example, let's say you make a bone halberd. There are a lot of searches where this could be relevant and helpful to people; it could be tagged with words like attachment, spear, polearm, halberd, bone, weapon, two, handed, item, because there's really no telling what words people are going to search with, and keywords are meant to help people find the models they want; if keywords were limited, then people doing searches would be missing out on a lot of models that might be relevant to their search but had different keywords than the terms they were searching.

My position on this matter is that people who are looking for a model to use for a unit may still find a hero model useful, but people looking for a model to use for a hero are not going to find a unit model useful (unless the unit model is of an appropriate style and scale to use as a hero, in which case tagging it with both hero and unit makes sense).

I disagree. You can use a unit model for a hero as well if you attach a hero glow to the unit's origin and if you are playing this hero for undead it dissipates just right if you add the skull thing effect using triggers after the hero's death... I just hate inconsistency and want all undead heroes to have the same damn deaths >.<
