I personally asked ToraxXx, the admin of the Warlock Brawl site, if we would face any copyright issues and he said that Zymoran himself is fine in case that becomes our project, and is also willing to help us.

Let's just wait for the poll first to see which gets picked. Also, until when would the poll last?

Yeah i didn't expect him to be negative to this at all^^
He's probably just happy someone find his map so awesome that they wanna base their own independent game on it ;)
I also would like to know the poll deadline

Btw i came up with another possible mode hehe
Think like the chair game only we switch the chairs with a shielding "bubble" where you can shoot stuff out from but noone can shoot at you(spells will just go straight through), and instead of music that suddenly stops we could have smth else that triggers the opening of the "bubbles", or music works aswell if we don't come up with smth better :p

When all the bubbles have a player in them(there will always be 2 bubbles too few) they lock the player inside so noone can shoot at them and he/she is safe and still able to shoot at the poor 2 players that didn't get a bubble, also the arena should shrink to a much smaller size when all the bubbles are taken and stay like that until they open again/the music(or w/e) starts again.
After you exit the bubble your mana/KB points will reset to 0 (if we add this like they have in warlock that is, where the more dmg you've taken in a round the higher KB pts you get and the higher Knockback you get from taking damage later on)

Everyone starts with the same amount of gold and everyone gets the same amount of gold after every "round"
You only have 1 life so this could be a short game or a long game depending on how good/lucky you are and when there are only 2 players left there will be a final, sudden death 1v1 fight ;)

lol sry man, i didn't think anyone would take offense by it....just my way of keeping the thread somewhat alive also during poll :p
Why wouldn't it be allowed to discuss the suggestions during poll anyways?

I think I may bow out of this, But I may still do a small part.
I think its great to have a project so open with lots of people. But I think at the rate things are going, that this project gona be a long term deal.

Progress

  • Find Interested People
  • Talk About Game Ideas
  • Create Official Poll, And Vote On Idea

About 75 Days From Start.
Maybe once the project is picked, there will be more of a timeline. and deadlines.

From Concept -> Finished Project (Where its being supported via updates)
In my experience, on a small project smaller then the ideas being suggested on a single platform, can easily take 4-5 months. And That was with a 2 people being with experience in the platform we were working in (had other successful projects in the platform).

Prepare
  • Determine Platform it will run on , Or First Platform
  • Determine toolset, unity, xna, ect...
  • Structure game out, get the bulk of the details in place
  • Assign Leads, for parts of projects.
  • Structure for how you will handle the project with a larger amount of people, and who will keep the versions in place.
  • Script out Time line
  • Get Everyone Up To speed, with all tools they will need.

How Long will this take?

Create Project/Release

  • Build Project (Code + Content)
  • Final Testing, Reworking.
  • Marketing/Ad Revenue in place.
  • Release Project Openly.

How Long will this take?

Final Thoughts

My Guess is this project is gona be closer to a 8-12 Month+ Project. Intill Its in a market place or on a site to play/get, where income is starting to flow in.
But Assuming I am right about the timeline, (I could be way off). Then Ill be around to help on a small part, but Its too big of a project for me to commit too.
If I were to find, out that this is suppose to be a 3 month project, and It looks like there is a clear setup of guidelines to take us, that could turn into a 6 month project. Then I would be more interested in working on it more.

But I am still really excited about a community project :)

hello everyone i woudl just like to thank you for taking jolly off our shoulders at warlockbrawl.com he used to plague our forums but looks like he's your problem now no takebacks

Just dropping by to tell that I actually found 3 Warlock games already in development, one being developed by the official site, one mobile version already released, and one in development.

Would we run into any troubles here?

Ok. so lets start. What's first? I guess it's the overall idea of the.. game itself. Like... how the spells would work - what will be the (for now 3) basic characters and gameplay. After that comes art - terrain, skins, models, etc., then sounds and music. I guess that's it. But programming is first. Of course, we'll need some Dummy Models or stuff like that to test with, but that's not really "art". So it's gameplay, programming, spells. etc. At least I think so... hm.

My take:

Art is not my strong side, so I'll focus on gameplay.

The core:
Make characters able to move, shoot, cast spells, be knocked, lose health
This is harder than it seems, since such basic things pretty much require the whole core of the engine to be done(unless we have one premade).
Note that this does not require a huge amount of spells yet, just 2-3.
Questions: Who is able to create some or all of this?

Characters:
1. Some good mage - focuses more on defense and enhancement. Perhaps good at turning enemy spells against them or just blocking them in general.
2. Some bad mage - diabolic, benefits somehow from causing chaos(lifesteal?). Good offense, but doesn't have as versatile defensive spells.
3. Some alternative mage/grey area mage - Could be anything, but I'd say balanced. Doesn't excel in anything, but doesn't have any considerable weaknesses either. (This one should probably be the first to make)
There could be way more characters later, but creating lots of them right away is just not worth it, so I'd initially only make the third.

Proposed classic mode:
Pretty much what the Warlock brawl is, but without shops or anything like that yet. All use the same character(until we make others available) and have some preset spells. This is mainly to get the prototype going.

What more(later):
Menus and shiz. Settings/Configurables. Modes.

Out of ideas for now.

We'll wheres the guy that actually suggested the idea itself? We need him, since its his "idea".

Well, I think it is jolly_jumper who suggested this

And for the ideas:

For me, game itself should be an Arena battle where mages are spawned to battle and show how great they use their magic. More likely, a battle in a Arena.

For the character types, I agree with Xonok's idea but maybe I can suggest mine too (just the same with Xonok):

Damage Dealer Mages - Mage that casts strong magics to deal heavy damages to enemies but they come with weaknesses such as they have no healing spell and they are more prone to damage.

Supporter Mages - Mage that casts variety of spells that mostly focuses on healing a target, reviving a target and small of its spell on damaging enemies. They are also prone to damage but can quickly surpass this through healing themselves but they will be a great disadvantage when faced with a Damage Dealer Mage because they can only casts Healing Spells and only little sets of damage dealing spells.

Weakening Mages - Mages that have the weakest or should we say lowest health. But their spells are a great advantage to them. Weakening Mages can cast spells that weakens enemies making them prone both on Physical and Magical Damage and comes with devastating spells that deals heavy damage and larger when under in the effect of a Weakening Spell.

Thinking of more character types.....

Feedbacks are appreciated about my idea!

Before we actually design the characters, how would the health system work? Magic systems? What would be the spell types? Armor types? And so on.

For the "heroes" we should have something similar to the Holy Trinity (Tank, DPS, Healer) or a "payed" Rock, Paper, Scissors approach.

Maybe we should make a whole new thread for the pre-production phase. Lets also keep track of what we actually need vs. want. We would most likely ditch a lot of what we originally wanted either it is not viable (time, money, workforce speaking) or it is bad for the game experience. Also, we need to list down who is actually in the team.

Is it really decided now that the game will revolve around magicians/mages only? 'Cause if not, then I'll throw in some ideas.

If this will be based offline, I'd suggest our own Warcraft IV. Too many stories to make, but the theme of the whole thing will already be known to all (heroes, wars, the races, etc.), and we'll already have a big concept on the gameplay (move, attack commands, just like the normal Warcraft III, OR a fully remade game system too (though it WILL take too long, it'll still be a pretty great thing).

If it is based on a site, a good, simple 3D Game would be fine. Somewhat hack n' slash, with spells, a locked game camera would be good (may only be one angle, or changeable with a few other options). I don't really know much about online browser-based games, so that's just my two cents for it. And also, after my own writing jobs, I'll probably write for this one and make a lore for it.

It would probably revolve around magicians, or just people firing projectiles in general.

I say don't focus on the lore, we just need to answer the 5 W's and H of the event. We can use this lore-time to focus more on the development of concepts and gameplay material.
Also, a 2.5D or a 2D can even work here for a more simplified approach, think Retro City Rampage like, but with magic and all that jazz.
