The more the merrier! I guess you have to stop somewhere though. ; )

A wrench (especially one torquing a bolt) will never go amiss. Consider some kind of plating (+armor spell/upgrade for the mount?), and perhaps an "overcharge" (something with electricity, perhaps on a robot arm or leg or in the eye of the mount?)?

(Not to be a downer & I've largely loved your icons, but that Grenade one is probably your weakest. Not only in terms of Warcraft-iness but also just a little lacking artistically (in general); the shape of it (especially the lid) seems off, a little uneven. :< )

Thanks for the feedback!

Agree on a wrench, also thought of that. A nice idea about plating, I will def take it into consideration, though not high prior. Overcharge, a good one, but I stored it for a Tesla variation of a Gnome.

I tried to make the grenade as simple as the missile (reminding the Boulder Throw icon) but I will try to improve it 😉

Thanks for the ideas! 🫡

Thinking of making an icon for strider's speed boost
Perhaps you can use this starcraft icon as a base for speed boost icon? Paint over it just like you did mechanostrider's icon from wow.

What else icons I should make?
How about some kind of reload ammo icon or a variation of mechanostider's icon with its headlights on?

Thanks for the ideas 🙂 I also thought of a leg but decided to draw a beaming exhaust pipe cuz it's understandable and easier to create but your reference can be a game changer!

Ammo reload for reloading speed? I was thinking of Gyrocopter's vanilla icon as it contains guns with ammo that could be used as a fire speed upgrade, and Tinker's gear could be used for other mechanical upgrades like reloading speed. But I can ponder over some ammo clips 👌

Headlights show up only in one animation, I don't think players can make such an icon work for something 🙂

This wrench in Blizzard style might be useful for some other maps/models, I hope, and I also made an alternative to the Engineering Upgrade skill because it didn't require much effort since I had the wrench.

I deliberately made it schematic, like the Aimed Shot and Precise Shot icons 👌
In the process, I curved the plate so that an empty corner was visible so that the material was perceived exactly as a thick metal plate/piece of armor.

Perhaps a useful longread of analysis of my own work using the example of my competition entries:

AllNerubianForce.png

In this longread, I will try to break down what I learned over time when I tried to create icons using my own work as an example. Before and during the creative process I really took my time and effort to take into account many, at first glance, hidden aspects in order to perform as best as possible in the competition. Thus, the analysis that I will do on my icons can help others to pay attention to the visual specificity of the icons on the theme of upgrades in Warcraft 3.

Will be available when the contest concludes! (Who am I to post this when I even didn't get judge's scores.)

Unless the Rules state otherwise, there's no reason you can't upload it or talk about it before the Contest ends. In fact, it's sort of built-in with the "must publicly upload to the Resource section" Rule, right?

But either way. 🤷‍♂️

Yea, sure I can but I thought it would be more "morally" correct to do it when I my works will be reviewed as part of the competition, confirming their value to some extent by authorized and respected members. Otherwise, at some points it will feel like narcissism and far-fetched stuff, I think? 🤔

Thanks! If I'm really interested or paid requests if one can find a way to pay me :ad:
Unfortunately I can't pay :( It's an edit of the repair icon, basically add upgrade glow like the WC3 orc/human upgrades. Someone already made it with AI here but I'd prefer a human made one :P

If you want a real tier 2 repair, I'd also improve the hammer 🧐

EDIT: I thought that such an icon could be very useful, and decided to create it. @loktar, here you go!

Lumber Harvesting Upgrades T1

Starting with that:

T1-1.png
T1-2.png
T1-3.png
T1-4.png
T1-5.png

My pick:

T1-1.png
T1-2.png
T1-3.png
T1-4.png
T1-5.png

A rather primitive and visual approach that combines a gradual decrease in empty space and an increase in the number and size of planks.

@Stormswind's pick for the Cut Wood map:

BTNHumanLumberUpgrade1.png
Т1-2.png
Т1-3.png
BTNHumanLumberUpgrade2.png
T1-5.png

Visually more centerred composition that features an increase in the number of planks and 2 standard icons that you won't have to import (T1 and T4).

What would you pick for your map?

Then use warcraft-y angle to show the armor in perspective:

Oooh, very interesting. Quite useful too; you can only re-use the Ghoul bite so many times! I really love "Bite" in particular (lots of empty space below but it doesn't seem bad). I want to like Aura of Hunger more... I think there's something about the deep orange rays; both the color & how they are centered on the yellowish teeth makes the whole thing a bit hard to read.

Thanks! I also agree on the teeth with rays, but the commissioner wanted it this way, hurts me a bit 🙂

Faerie Dragon Upgrades

Caster Upgrades:
BTNFD_T1_glow.png
BTNFD_T3.png

Regular Upgrades:
BTNFD_T1.png
BTNFD_T2.png
BTNFD_T3.png

Alternative Variations:
BTNRandom1.png

T1. Standard NE colors, simple shape and patterns.
T2. An additional gradient for the NE colors, improved shape, patterns, a bit bigger size and a T2 glow.
T3. One more color, improved shape, patterns, a bit bigger size, Elune's sign and a T3 glow.

Another attempt to make icons that can get lost in the range of native icons:

I added some glowing dots on purpose so that there are more associations with the Faerie Dragon, because magic pollen flies off from it. Here's an example with caster upgrades that have additional glowing patterns:

Orc & Fel Orc Crossbowman Creative Process

Fel Orc Crossbowman

I received an order to create 2 icons for this model by General Frank.

I used the following icons for inspiration:
BTNChaosGrunt.png
BTNChaosWarlock.png
BTNChaosWolfRider.png

First, I observed the model and made a screenshot:
Снимок экрана 2026-02-16 111257.png

I chose this angle and tilt of the face, as if this unit was holding a crossbow and looking at the target.

Then I focused on the helmet with chaos-like textures, because it makes the model stand out and is different from other icons:
1771278466093.png

I tried to make it look as sharp as details on the first icon.

After that, I partially rendered the closed jaw to make the icon stand out more from the other Fel Orc icons:
1771278588010.png

Here I also added hair that grows in the same direction as the model's, giving it some space inside the icon to better convey the character's personality.

Then I added a purple TC shoulder pad with canonical shape, because Fel Orcs are mostly represented with the purple color on icons:
FelOrcCrossbowmanPurple.png

At the end, I compared the icon to the OG stuff to see if they were visually similar:
FelOrcs.png

After the result got approved, the money went to support the Warcraft Classic HD project that will likely benefit the community.
Thank you so much to @MildKidneys for your support and for generously offering to share the icon with everyone on Hive by allowing me to publish it!

Orc Crossbowman

I used the following icons for inspiration:
BTNHellScream.png
BTNGrunt.png
BTNGuldan.png
BTNRaider.png

Most of them, especially Grunt and Raider, look like screenshots they drew on top of. That's why I decided to keep this level of detail.

I swapped all the Fel Orc textures for regular Orcs see how the model will look:
1771280985792.png

Here I saw some fur and a helmet made in another style.

I then added some fur on the shoulder pad to make it more similar to the reference:
OrcCrossbowman.png

I also chose a posture as if he was bending his shoulder to hold the crossbow and shoot.

And again, I compared the icon to the OG stuff to see if they were visually similar:
OC_Comparison.png

Green Orcs (except Grommash, of course) look less agressive and "pointy" than Fel Orcs so that the icon doesn't have huge fangs and a raging grimace.

Trap Spiders

1771494889455.png

1771495531134.png

I also decided to make the Green variation with more alien-like eyes, stranger chitin and a bit longer protruding mandibles in order to signal that this spider can apply a specific effect, like poison.
