Orc & Fel Orc Crossbowman Creative Process
Fel Orc Crossbowman
I received an order to create 2 icons for this
model by
General Frank.
I used the following icons for inspiration:
First, I observed the model and made a screenshot:
I chose this angle and tilt of the face, as if this unit was holding a crossbow and looking at the target.
Then I focused on the helmet with chaos-like textures, because it makes the model stand out and is different from other icons:
I tried to make it look as sharp as details on the first icon.
After that, I partially rendered the closed jaw to make the icon stand out more from the other Fel Orc icons:
Here I also added hair that grows in the same direction as the model's, giving it some space inside the icon to better convey the character's personality.
Then I added a purple TC shoulder pad with canonical shape, because Fel Orcs are mostly represented with the purple color on icons:
At the end, I compared the icon to the OG stuff to see if they were visually similar:
After the result got approved, the money went to support the
Warcraft Classic HD project that will likely benefit the community.
Thank you so much to
@MildKidneys for your support and for generously offering to share the icon with everyone on Hive by allowing me to publish it!
Orc Crossbowman
I used the following icons for inspiration:
Most of them, especially Grunt and Raider, look like screenshots they drew on top of. That's why I decided to keep this level of detail.
I swapped all the Fel Orc textures for regular Orcs see how the model will look:
Here I saw some fur and a helmet made in another style.
I then added some fur on the shoulder pad to make it more similar to the reference:
I also chose a posture as if he was bending his shoulder to hold the crossbow and shoot.
And again, I compared the icon to the OG stuff to see if they were visually similar:
Green Orcs (except Grommash, of course) look less agressive and "pointy" than Fel Orcs so that the icon doesn't have huge fangs and a raging grimace.
