Set Volume Channel Doesn't Seem to Work

So I wanted to mute the sound of some spider egg destructibles dying before a cinematic. I guessed that Set Volume Channel - Animation and Spell Sounds would be the right one and set that to 0%, killed the spider eggs, and then reset the volume after a wait. No good, it played at full volume.

Since then I've seen what happens if I set every single volume channel to 0 and never restore them: nothing. All sounds and music and unit responses play at normal volume.

Unless I'm missing something here, that action just does nothing at all. Is there another way to mute the sounds of destructibles or units dying?
