It seems that sometimes I disconnect from the chat and end up losing messages. Does anyone have this problem and know the cause (and hopefully the fix)?

It happens to me when the router I am connected to reconnects to the internet after a scheduled or not scheduled IP change.

I thought the plan was to make Hive chat more like Discord and not making Discord the Hive chat.

The only real question is why it seemingly took it 10 minutes to realize it's disconnected, unless those are all of the messages that people sent in that time.
If you don't have this problem elsewhere, you are not a Twitch user, with their chat disconnecting all day long and much in a similar fashion realizes it's disconnected only 10+ minutes later.

Changing to discord would be cool, but some people can get angry if they don't get their custom colour and custom chat icon. And also I feel that more less friendly and community-wise people might destroy the fun on discord.

No idea, but fortunately it only happens when I'm not actively talking.

I agree with HappyTauren. I am on Hive's chat because it is directly connected with site. I do not have any other accounts on any chats around world, I even did not even know until this thread what is Discord.
