It's been like that for probably the last hundred or more pages now. I remember it used to do that three years ago when I posted in it regularly. My guess is it's because vB isn't built to handle forum threads this long.

Finally, those pesky ghost pages are gone.
Ghost pages appear because vBulletin doesn't deallocate pages from page stack when you delete posts :/
The pages are there, but they point to the top of the stack for some reason and they contain no data.
