The point of a theme for a contest, is to create parameters with which to compare each model to eachother. When 2 submissions are of similar quality, that tie breaker could be how well the contestant paid attention to the theme, how creative they were within that set system of parameters.
In this example. 2 people thought that by stretching the theme for spacecraft to include bugs, that they would get bonus creativity points. Because spacebugs are so out of the ordinary, 'bugs' is not the first thing you think of when you hear 'spacecraft'.
It's an increasingly popular mentality, where someone believes that he who stretches the theme the farthest, is the most unique (and yes, i fell into that trap too, in the past).
It's easier to compare a bunch of battlecruisers to eachother to find the best one, than to compare a battlecruiser to an overlord to a gundam. In these situations, the judge has to defer to how well these archetypes fit the theme.
A spacecraft or spaceship is a craft or machine designed for spaceflight. Spacecraft are used for a variety of purposes, including communications, earth observation, meteorology, navigation, planetary exploration and transportation of humans and cargo.
I guess i wasnt paying as much attention to the thread when you all asked about zhurgbugs. but when i read that theme description a few key words popped out at me. "designed for spaceflight" .... ergo, my problem with the wings in space. And as far as i can tell, both the zerg in this contest function as simple attacking units. They dont seem to have any spell animations. So i fail to see how they were designed for communications, navigation, or cargo transport.... (observation/exploration... eh, ambiguous) So it would appear that these zerg are not defined to function so much as "spacecraft" as they are simply "giant killer bugs that can breathe in space".
HERES THE PART YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO
But the most important thing that you should realize about this. is that "you are blowing this thing out of fucking proportion" I didnt disqualify anyone. It was simply part of my judging. a very small, insignificant part in which the effects are almost negligible (1/10th or 10%). And that most, if not ALL of my ranting is 'tongue in cheek'. I'm not going to lose any sleep over 'why are there bugs in space'. I was merely pointing out a logical fallacy in an incredibly popular franchise. Dont get all huffy and offended over this shit. LAUGH WITH ME GODDAMNIT. Zerg are conceptually retarded. (that doesnt mean i cant enjoy playing SC2). Even if i removed the 'creativity/theme' section of my judging, it really wouldnt change the end result that much.
You people get offended over the most ridiculous shit.
