What do you all think of NSA spying on America's emails, phones, txts, etc. Here is a link to a documentary about how it works and its relationship to 9-11.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/spyfactory/program.html

So what do you guys think about the whole spying issue? Do they have the right to peer into our personal lives? If so, why. If not, why not? Is this morally right, is it necessary to ensure our protection and freedom? What are your thoughts on it.

By the way, i do not want people flaming eachother or spamming. I would like to see good discussions but do not let it get out of hand and if you are going to say something, please give a good reasoning or backing to your opinion.

Thanks

P.S. You can probably read this, so HI NSA =D

And kids, this is how America became paranoid and bought many locks and guns.

You Americans probally care about the spying but the rest of the world doesn't.

Same goes for that GM of yours.

They have been listening in on other countries, but not americans inside their own country until bush bypassed laws that allowed NSA to pretty much listen in on anyone anytime. and divineboss, what do you mean by paranoid? no one wants their rights violated or taken away. that is not paranoia.

Profanity isn't against the law, so there is no reason for them to knock down your door in the first place. However, I think that it is slightly overboard because I expect that with every message I send, everytime I talk to someone, that their is some sense of privacy that goes along with the message. Prior to 9-11, for example, phone messages that were intimate or seemed private were deleted. However, now, they must be listened to every time by employees at NSA. I think it is quite wrong, because, using 9-11 as an example again, they had all the information they needed to stop the 9-11 attacks from ocurring. They did not need to hear the conversations and view the conversation of every single American in the United States. It is overboard in my opinion.

My parents come from the GDR (East Germany => communism, STASI spying people the whole day along) and actually, it wasn't funny what they told me about. People spy other people, even friends and family members! That can drive a man crazy.

I remember having been told of something called "echelon". It is some kind of technology network USA, Canada and the United Kingdom use to spy a bit around the world. It would not shock me, if US agencies like NASA or what ever were already doing that for long time....

It really does not effect me at all. I doubt the government cares about what the average person does on the internet.

Surprised no one has mentioned is thus far. The USA Patriot Act? It's no longer in effect, but it relates nonetheless. It expanded the use of National Security Letters, which allows the FBI to search telephone, e-mail, and financial records without a court order. "The lower standard applied to wiretaps 'gives the FBI a 'blank check' to violate the communications privacy of countless innocent Americans'." Infringement on the rights of Americans, isn't exactly a new thing.

Edit to be more relevant to the topic:
"NSA's mission, as set forth in Executive Order 12333, is to collect information that constitutes 'foreign intelligence or counterintelligence' while not 'acquiring information concerning the domestic activities of United States persons'. NSA has declared that it relies on the FBI to collect information on foreign intelligence activities within the borders of the USA, while confining its own activities within the USA to the embassies and missions of foreign nations."

We all know that the Feds and NSA don't give a crap about the American borders.
