Machines are going to be completely hydraulic. That means powerful, large-scale, and s l o w.

Machines > The bigger they are, the slower they are, and the more complicated their maitainance.

Magic > Angels/Demons teach mortals the sciences, and how to control them with spells, these spells are powerful, and rare. The knowledge is passed down, and the scientific knowledge is eschewed, and corrupted, and weakened.

Magic is essentially "science" with psychic control over it. Think...pyrokinesis...or terrakinesis. You can use magic, but it takes a bit of thinking, and sometimes it is just easier, better, and safer to stab someone, than try to catch them on fire.

Magic is alot like the magic in Full Metal Alchemist...except it is not limited to being done on circles, but it takes a bit more thought.

Machines are prevalently used in this new world, and the magical sciences are a part of that, as highly learned mages help devise these weapons and inventions with their knowledge of physics, the elements, and how to control them.

A full armoured knight on horse back of our world, would become a fully armoured walking battle suit of this one.

That is a summary essentially...

Has anyone here seen avatar?
Maybe magic here should be like in the show, you can only control one of the four elements: earth, fire, water and air, but it would take decades of practice to get to a heightened form if control over the element.

Or we could have some sort of guardian monks, that would pass on the secrets of Magic to their apprentices, and magic would be given to them by the guardian of their element, and there would be a temple/s for every element

It's overused because the principle actually happens. Everything is composed of the same base particles.

Anyways, machines are hydraulic, so mobile ones would more frequently be large four-legged walkers; their "feet" would be large to distribute the weight and minimize the pressure exerted on the ground by each leg. Can't have them cracking things as they walk around. The actual "walking" motion would be one leg would rise, rotate and extend into position, and then touch down to the ground again. Think like support legs for construction vehicles, where they would be powerful, simple, and slow. Anything would be able to be mounted on the basic leg frames. Machines in general would have the feel of construction vehicles, except more like ancient-stone technology than contemporary steel frames.

This is essentially what I wanted and was trying to say so....Everyone else shut up about this subject above and let us get continued with this process of brainstorming this discussion has ended period.

Offcourse, deserts are awesome XD, especially becouse it has such mistique about it (hard to explore/map, giving it loads of places where awesome stuff can happen, such as massive machines, magic gone out of hand, massive monsters etc.)

I might also add a map to that... an under-ground one eventually, I already have an idea for the darkdwellers (temporary name), how they look: White/pale skin, very dark black hair, large pupils (only a ring of white is visible when they look straight at you), they have Exo-skeleton fingers, which they can lock into position, making them unable to move until they break, this can also be unlocked, the tips of their fingers are as hard as rock, they're toes are almost the same, this allows them to dig easier and climb up through mountains and tunnels.

Meh, Mushrooms are so over-used, I think I'll use plants that have two parts where roots come from, that cross from one side of the tunnel to another, like a stick, this would take care of securing the tunnels, not allowing them to collapse, give basic resources, and have a natural barricade for incoming enemies, and if these plants are chopped down, there is the likelyhood of ithe tunnel collapsing XD

The Desert People
A species Unkown
Not many know the truth of the Deserts, some think they were always there, some think they are places the Gods have forsaken, and yet a few, know that the great deserts where once great seas, that dried out over time. Even less know of the people that dwell in the salty flats, and in the sand dunes. Most of those who know have probably heard what they from other men, who have heard it from someone else. So information is often distorted, some people say that the desert dwellers are giants that kill and eat everything that moves, others say they’re tiny people, who ambush travelers and traders in the deserts for a living. Some even say they have wings. None of this is true; there is only one reliable document about the desert nations.

“Day 32.
The expedition was surging forward into the desert with time to spare, so today we wanted to set up camp early and try to rest. Just as we started unpacking the tents, we heard the clash of battle; it was coming from behind a hill, as we rushed to investigate we heard loud bird-like screeches and screams, coming from the same direction. After crossing the hill, we stumbled upon a dune, filled with dark-skinned warriors, or at least it looked like that on first site. As we looked harder, we discovered another group of warriors, about half as big as the one of dark-skinned men, though the second group was smaller, it seemed to have the upper hand in the battle. Their skin blended with the pale sand perfectly, and so did their clothing. The bottom, and center of the dune was a mess, with the two groups hacking at each other, we also noticed the most magnificent creatures, birds, with small wings, and really large scaly legs, mounted by both groups’ warriors where running around, tearing people apart with their powerful beaks. We were severely under armed, so we could not interfere as the dark-skinned warriors were slaughtered, from the looks of the fight, it seemed the dark warriors were surprised, probably caught in an ambush by the pale ones. Seeing the new races was truly magnificent, luckily, we weren’t spotted as the pale group of warriors, took all valuables and went away.

They forgot one of theirs’ corpse, so we took it in for examination, along with a corpse from the dark-skinned warriors. What we found out was astonishing. The inner organs of both corpses were almost exactly identical to each other, but completely different from ours. All of their organs were smaller, except the kidneys and stomach. Those were actually bigger than ours and optimized for water storage. We also discovered that their lungs and heart where different from ours, not by much, but theirs’ were larger. Their ribcage was also a lot harder than ours, and it seemed they have an extra 2 pairs of ribs. Their epidermal tissue was a lot thinner than ours, which probably allowed the skin to breathe easily in this intense heat, but somehow the same tissue was also a harder to break than ours. We thought it was probably because of the sand storms, but we can’t be sure. It seems generation after generation of living in these intense circumstances forced their bodies to change and adapt. Truly spectacular….”

Quotation from “Of Nations Unknown”
By Don Hedginger

From this document we have concluded that the sand-people could go without water 3 times as longer as a normal human, and could probably take 3 times the punishment a normal human can. One of the afore-mentioned giant birds was captured, it had a 2-chamber stomach, one for digestion, and one for water storage, it could store enough water to last around a month. From the insides it was discovered that they’re diet is mainly carnivorous, though they also ate palnts if needed. Their large, sharp beaks are perfect for cutting through flesh, and breaking bones.
Clans, Subgroups and Religion.
The Desert people are nomads, and live in clans, every clan has subgroups. When a Desert-Dweller matures, he is offered to choose a subgroup. Different Subgroups are assigned to do different tasks in a Clan.

Ex. Iniss Far’Gaz of Clan Minaar, Subgroup Dawnbreakers, Vanguard of the Clan.

Every Subgroup has it’s own Holy Deity, believed to protect the members of the Subgroup. Honorable people are believed to have to place their loyalty like this:

Clan>Subgroup> Family

List of known Clans and subgroups:
Clan Minaar
-Dawnbreakers (vanguard)
-Stoneskins (hq protectors)
-Cobra Fangs (elite assault unit)
-Tiger Paws (conquering force)

Clan Tzinadar
-Shieldbearers (vanguard)
-The Stone Crawlers ( elite fighting unit)
-Jiin’sori (double as hq defenders and conquering force)

Clan Mul’Frat
-Beesting (vanguard)
-Meercats (scout/elite/tactical unit)
-Desert Wolves (elite conquering force)

I'll just stick something together, more like a report than lore though XD...:

Name: Kloian

-------------------------------------Appearance-------------------------------------
..-Skin: Pale, most likely becouse of the lack of sun.
..-Eyes: Their pupils are almost as large as the visible part of the eye, only a circle of
............white remains, no other colours are visible.
..-Hair: Pitch black, with little variety per person.
..-Average length: about 1.60 meters tall
..-Average weight: 50-60 kg
..-Special features: Fingers and toes are very hard, like armour, there are no bones
.......................... inside them, the bones have formed around the fingers,
.......................... this 'exoskeleton' is able to lock itself into place,
.......................... either fully straight, or at an angle of 90 degrees.

-------------------------------------Habitat-------------------------------------
..-Area: Mountains, preferringly next to barren areas

..-Surroundings: Caves, both natural and artifficial, but mostly a combination of both,
...................... In these caves, special plants grow, or ar being grown that keep up
...................... the ceiling, and prevent enemies from entering at high speeds, these ...................... caves are also like mazes.

..-Cities: Massive dome, with a massive pillar in the middle, the houses are carved and
............ build into and onto the walls of these domes, bridges extend to the pillar in
............ the middle, which is the main building of a city, as it's hollow, and the city
............ leaders are in there, all the cities are connected through a massive maze of
............ tunnels called "the Duppidvoup", or the Connection

-------------------------------------Culture-------------------------------------
..-Language: Is a variation of Common, it's very easy to translate when it's written, and
................. you know their signs, it is thought this language has evolved from Common
................. as every letter is connected with the next letter in the alphabet, except
................. for the A,E,I,O,U and Y, which link to eachother, this would make a word
................. such as Word into: Xusf, nobody, not even the Kloian know why their
................. language formed in such an odd way.

..-Architecture: They love decorations, and can easily carve them out from the rock,
..................... their buildings are a bit small, but are also used less than most other
..................... races would, becouse there is no rain they won't have to find shelter,
..................... they mostly dwel around in the massive caverns, which children have to
..................... learn before leaving the city, do work, or buy stuff.

..-Politics: They don't like wars, in their whole history, only two wars have ever
.............. occurred in which the Kloian were both victorious, they have strenght in
.............. numbers, and are very agile and strong, their exo-skeleton fingers also help
.............. with melee combat, when war is declared, and night comes, millions of
.............. Kloians come flooding out from the mountains, only wearing standart
.............. clothes, they charge for the enemy city that declared the war on them, and
.............. as soon as they get close, they all split up, surround the city, and aproach
.............. as silent as possible, then, as soon as the alarm is rung, they charge at full
.............. speed towards the walls, climbing over them and slaying everybody in their
.............. path, when they are at war, they are ruthless, and you wouldn't say
.............. they were a peacefull race.

..-population: Their population is immense, nobody ever tried to count them, but reports
.................. from the wars, say that a whole city, that could support a million people,
.................. totally full of them, even on the roofs, walls, pillars and trees they were
.................. seen, and it was said that was only a very small portion of the population
.................. as many Kloians say they didn't even notice anyone leaving for the war.

..-Likings: They like shiney things, even if it hurts their eyes in full sunlight, but in the
............. darkness of the caves makes shiney things look comforting, most houses look
............. more like a storage of shiney stuff than an actualy house, they also prefer
............. technology above magic, they also like darkness, and hate war, they also
............. have a disliking for war-loving races.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's it for now ^^.

Why don't I make up a new name and just have one race that are kind of like any other with there evil ones and good ones and make them be divine and dominant. Sort of like overwatchers of the world.

It would ruin the gritty but balanced feeling we're trying to achieve.

Here's some more about the Sand People:

Armaments, machinery, and magical ties of the Desert Dwellers

Weaponry:
The preferred weapons of a Sand Warrior are the slingshot and two fist/hand weapon or daggers. Waving a sword/mace/axe/polearm or anything of the sorts in the Deserts, would be very tiresome work, the Sand Warriors prefer sharp small weapons, weapons that are easy to conceal, and fast striking weapons, over large blunt ones.
The fist weapons of choice are either a Ta’rad, which has a stubby wide blade, with an incision in the middle, good for grappling other, longer blades, and armor penetration. Or a Fissnuq, a long narrow blade, that is attached to the forearm, perfect for slashing through a battlefield.
These weapons vary in design from clan to clan.
Some warriors choose fistblades over anything else.
A fistblade is basically a knuckleduster, with a blade on each ring.
Combat daggers used by the sand warriors often have four steel rings attached to the handle, designed to frotect the fingers in battle, and to enhance a punch.

Armor

Every clan has a different camo set. But almost all the clans use the same base armor. If you can even call it that. The base armor is made of cloth, any other material would make it unbearable under the hot desert sun, with wide sleeves, that are tied up at the end with a leather strap, the same strap also prevents the ankle from twisting too far and eventually braking in combat. Same principal is used for the leggings.

Magical Ties

The magic-blessed are few amongst the Sand People. Those that posses magical abilities, are high ranking in their clan, and valuable assets to it. Magic wielding Desert Dwellers often use their abilities to aid their clan members in battle, manipulating the sand with their minds, that’s why they are often called Sand Golems.

MACHINERY

The Desert Dweller clans are primitive regarding technology, mainly because they are secluded from the rest of the world, and partly because not much machinery works in the deserts. Though there are many master alchemists amongst them, who brew deadly poisons, and often make bombs or flammable potions, good for guerilla warfare, and ambushes. The Sand Dweller blacksmiths are also masters of their trait.

Well if both races were one evil one good but then they had some evil and good in them that just sounds kind of ehh I like the idea of one race better.
