Yes, I know it's not even over yet, that Aberration contest. But the idea was met with positive reactions in the chat, so I was instructed to post it here.
Now, my idea was a series of related contests, at the end of which people would get a basic techtree [worker, basic melee, basic ranged, caster and so on] of things belonging to the same race.
Now, the contests themselves would each revolve around one such unit. So, basically, the first's theme would be "Worker". Once it's done, the next would be "Basic Melee/ Fodder/ Footman/ Whatever you call it."
I'm not going to start rambling about it's possible downsides.
Well, opinions would be nice.

That sounds great, as I said in chat, but what would be best if it was one huge contest, like a miniature version of the Hive's Olympics(which failed miserably, sadly). So basically an extended modeling contest that lasts for half a year or so, and during which you must create 6 basic units that form the backbone of a techtree: Worker, Basic Melee, Basic Ranged, Caster, Siege, Special\Ultimate.

The main problem is that people who participated in the first contest may not wish to participate in the second contest. And another similar problem is that people who didn't participate in the first contest, wouldn't be able to participate in the second contest, and people who didn't participate in the second contest wouldn't be able to participate int he third contest, etc. With one big contest, you can join anytime and submit a full entry.

You wouldn't necessarily have to participate in all contests, joining contest number two and not number one means nothing, except for the fact that it might not have a contest-judged worker unit (if worker is the first contest). You can still create your own race and your own basic melee unit.

The series of related contests would encourage people to make their own race, but it wouldn't leave people out because they didn't participate in on or more other contests in the series. At least, that's how I'd make it - to get as many entries as possible and not scare people with commitments.

In a perfect world this would be sweet, but it seems like a stretch to be totally honest. A worker contest could be sweet, a fodder contest could be sweet, etc, but to have them all related? You'd have a lot of hurdles to get people over...

I like the idea but it would, without a doubt, fail utterly. if people miss ONE of the contests (either lazy or busy etc) then they couldnt really make the entire "race" along the same deadline as everyone else. And even then, we dont exactly have an army of modelers lined up for every contest, at the end we never get more than 8 models to judge. and if all these contests are focused towards that single final goal of a complete playable race, we'll have contestants dropping like flies. i doubt anyone would be willing to go all the way on this one. And then there's the whole, waiting until the contest starts to start working. what if you have an idea for a worker but you have to make the footman, the siege weapon and town hall first, and if you have all your ideas in mind, whats to stop you from making them all in a few months before youre suppose to when the contest starts?

I guess you could make this one MASSIVE - SUPER CONTEST where you have to make an entire playable race. but then you have the whole "holyfuckshitpiss thats a lot of work so fuck that" mentality.
*shrugs* either way, i dont see how this could work.
