Definitely. And yeah, those abomis would need custom anims... But if everyone were to "make" their race, how many units would there be in it? Will it be like the dragons: one whelp and one grown organism, or the gnolls: melle unit, ranged unit, spellcaster unit, and boss unit. That would be awesome, but it would require quite a lot of time to execute...

If you want an organic modeling competition, i would suggest a conceptual standpoint. Simple give descriptions and words that everyone must incorperate (visibly or not) into their model, of course these must not be too constricting.

Example:

Swamp Creature.

It limped along on its deformities, dragging its bulbous sacks and echoing stange noises in the swamp through the appendages on its face.

Something like this gives a great opportunity for everyone to come up with a unique model, while guiding them all in a theme and being fairly unrestrictive.

Just my thoughts on your predicament.

Hmmz....

Military:----Not limited to modern military. Relatively practical. Lots of room for imagination. And not neccasarily mechanical.

Effects:----Easy to make, newbie friendly, and practical with lots of eyecandy.

NewRace:--Many ideas and lots of imagination room. But perhaps time restraining. Although if it might give people a chance to experiment with fresh ideas.

fantasy units for a fantasy game pwns mods of modern military based on fantasy games.
I'm sorry, did anyone say modern? No, they said military. I'm not sure if this website links to an alternate parallel universe, but in mine, Footman/Archer/Gunman/Samurai/Plane/Ghoul/Tank/Android is really kind of hard to group all into "modern" without a time machine.

In my opinion, a generic effects-based modeling competition sounds rather bland. Effects tend to be universally practical, but military sounds more fun (not that my modeling-oblivious ass is going to join. it's just fun to look over)

Military: Almost too broad... nearly any unit could be argued as military.
Effects: Easy, friendly, and all users would be able to do this one, however, I can see the future, with 200 entries of LOLZ PARTICLE SPLOSIONS models...
New Race: Waaaay too much for a single contest.
...I dunno which I'd go for, I guess military, although I think we should make it a *bit* more specific.

We've done lots of things so far, including organic units. I think we need to give the effect makers a contest every now and then too. If it's a hit, we might evolve it into its own contest entirely, but we'll see. I definitely like that idea much more than "military"...it's so bland.

I am with WILL, FX would be neat and even the newbeginners could take part in the contest, like with the last one.

I still think FX pack is a good idea.

They're simple and fast to create, so we can have more entries/more effects per user.
They're useful and generally fit with Wc3, since they use ingame textures.
They're small in file size and demand no skinning or animating skills.
They're easy to learn.

Speak for yourself. If are you good at making SFX, this does not mean that is the easiest part of modelling for anyone else.

I propose a SFX contest with the theme of the primary four elements: Fire, Air, Water, Earth.

People can develop the theme as they like, but there must be a visible tie-in with one or more of these four elements. No "darkness" or some crap being an element.

I agree projectiles should be allowed as well.

Lets develop the idea and rules people.

Fine, no theme then, but tough luck comparing effects to one another when judging.

Again, you have to limit the size of the Effect, and having it smaller than a 512x512 square in the editor is a good idea. Or you could go even smaller, which might be better.

Also, while big explosions might be cool, they have to be interesting.
You can't make a huge explosion with one emmitter and expect to have it look good. And smaller, more detailed explosions are much better in the Wc3 engine.

The more I think about it, having a theme might that doesn't immediatly scream "BIG EXPLOSION!" (like fire, or dust) would also be useful.

The like 10 people who wanted a military competition got owned and overrulled.

Totaly lame, a vote should have been made, and then perhaps some good would have come out of it. As it stands now, military pack supporters have been mostly disbanded due to the Vetoing of of the pack by a few people.

MySpaceBar brings up a good idea, we could make it specificaly on a type of unit (Grunt/cannonfodder, Tanks/cavalry, Siege/artillery, Airplanes/space fighters)

All i want is a vote, to see if there really is a large need for this noob-friendly SFX pack.

In my opinion, SFX should be a separate contest. Like donut said, it's a very unique category, that utilizes different ideas.
