I need help to build my system! I want a computer that can handle up-to-date games and 3d applications with ease. Also a good enough system that I won't have to upgrade for a while. I need a good mouse, speakers, and monitor too!

In general those are a good selection of parts; however I would suggest a few changes:

First off, don't waste your money on that RAM. DDR2 is about $40 for 4GB, and that's the stuff you want. G.Skill is the stuff to buy right now.
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

Don't get a Rosewill power supply, they are not as high build quality as some other brands.

Use the money you saved from the RAM and get something like this:
Newegg.com - ZALMAN ZM500-HP 500W Continuous @ 45°C ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Modular Active PFC Modular LED Heatpipe-Cooled SLI Power Supply - Power Supplies
Newegg.com - PC Power & Cooling S61EPS 610W Continuous @ 40°C EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies
Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

And don't buy an IDE DVD drive, get a SATA one.

Other than that, nice selections. It should make a quite powerful and capable machine.

It's not a waste now. Core i7 CPUs are still new and carry a bit of a price premium.

As far as gaming performance is concerned, the large L2 caches on the Core 2 Quad CPUs allow them to perform at a level close to the Core i7 CPUs.

Suit yourself though.

The Asus P6T or the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 would make good motherboard choices for an i7 CPU. (Be prepared to spend at least $700 on the Motherboard/CPU/Memory alone though).

If you can do better than this with the same or lower total price then go right ahead. Got help from a pro at TechIMO Tech Support Help and Computer Hardware Expert Forums to make this list. I'm willing to spend the extra bucks for the i7 920 core.

That list looks decent. You don't need a 750W Corsair PSU though, it's quite a bit overkill, even for Crossfire'd 4870s. Although it wouldn't hurt to get.

See if you can get any of the parts in a combo deal off newegg and shave some extra $$$ off the price.

Best of luck with the build.

May I remind you people that I7 only works with DDR3 RAM, thus both his orignal and samuraid's would not work on an I7.

Nvidia cards are graphically weaker than ATI's top so go ATI for graphics. Nvidia's top cars however have additional processor support and so reduce load from your CPU and run it on the graphic card. Thus for model rendering top range nvidia cards might (not sure) be faster than ATI ones as they tend to be processor rendered as apposed to graphic processor. I however like nvidia as they seem to work well, so it is up to you which to go.

I would much rather go with 4 GB DDR3 than 8 GB DDR2, as then I would future proof the PC for an I7, if not even get one.

Most modern games load the graphic card far more than the processor, thus for gamming it is recommendable to get a better graphic card than processor. Only excpetion I know are RTS games like supreme commanders. Basically, ingame you would notice hardly any preformance change from a slower CPU and a faster one but you will easilly notice the difference between a faster GPU.

In the end, an I7 or quad core like you have choosen will run almost every modern game under normal conditions with hardly any noticable difference, thus spending the money on a better graphic card would yield far better FPS or graphic quality.

I7 would make a big difference with model rendering if it uses the CPU, as those usually take great advantage of threading and the I7's improved threading capabilities would yield the most then. But games I do not believe will not use its 8 thread capabilities much better than 4 threads and until the CPU becomes the limating factor, it would seem pointless to get an excessive one.

EDIT - Just noticed his one list which includeds I7 and DDR3 ram, DOH:

Don't say that! So discouraging. THE only reason it doesn't work for you is because you had it on laptops. :( It better work.

Decent build? You could do better with the same price?

I had it on my desktop PC. My monster desktop. Don't try that.

And in this case it's not so much the fact that it's Vista, it's that it's 64 Bit. 64 Bit XP is risky, many things do not work or have conflicts, because even though the hardware is there, the software required to fully utilize the 64-Bit architecture is not.

Thus, if you think normal Vista is bad (It is), 64-Bit is a nightmare. 64-Bit XP has been around for 7 years now and they still haven't managed to get it right. You think the Vista version is going to do any better?

I don't. It would not be worth the risk to try unless you're someone like Samuraid, who is fine with doing plenty of tweaking and experimenting to make it work for you.

64 bit or 32 bit should not influence software that much at all, maybe double the RAM used but still should not cause major compatability problems. It is the drivers that are the problem as many are used to only interface to 32 bit. Driver developers are lazy with their 64 bit drivers so the 32 bit equivelents tend to be faster or more stable.

Most 32-bit applications that run as ring-3 userland programs will work fine in 64-bit windows.

Programs that get down into the kernel, use privileged instructions, and/or load into a higher ring might have problems in 64-bit. Drivers are of this category.
