Adding Animation to Models?

I have several 3d models that currently have no animations. I would like to give them animations, however I don't know the first thing about animating. I don't need any fancy animations just the basic walk, attack, spell, and stuff like that. I looked for a tutorial but found nothing on how to add animations to a .3DS model.
