Status

Hello, i'm using Windows 7 at the moment, and i would like somes informations about Windows 8, in order to know if i ask Santa Orc (this guy : :wsmile:) to offer me it for Christmas or not.

I've seen on some other threads that the Task Manager roxx (compared to Windows 7's one)

Here are some questions i have :

What are the advantages ?
What are the inconvenients ?
Are there any compatibility problems, and if yes with what Software/Game/Whatever ?
Also, how is the interface (compared to Windows 7's one) ?
Is there really a gain of performances ?

Note that i want comparisons with Windows 7 as answers ^^"

Well, it can be convenient if you're using a touch screen.

However, enjoy the lack of privacy:
Windows 8 Tells Microsoft About Everything You Install, Not Very Securely

I don't think so

I'm pretty sure it asked about this during the installation.

That article is a joke. So what if Microsoft knows what IP is installing what Application, that means nothing as IPs are often non-static and require legal intervention to be converted into a physical person (ISPs will not disclose who is mapped to what IP address without appropiate legal permission).

In WarCraft III if you host a game you make your IP known to all players searching the lobby. They also know exactly what maps you are playing. I bet you they have even worse security however who cares if people know your IP and what maps you host.

Computers are legally forced to internally log all actions they do. This is why private browsing is not entirly private (still possible to get what websites were visited).

Really, at the BIOS level? I don't see why a free OS would implement that, so...

No? Why would the BIOS log anything considering it is just a bootstrap loader for the opperating system. I doubt it has the resources to log anything.

I don't see why a free OS would implement that, so...
Unix kernal might not but all commercial operating systems like Windows 5 through to 8 and OSX have it implemented. The reason is to allow proper criminal investigations into the activites performed on a system in the case a user is suspected of accessing highly illegal content (such as child pornographic images). These logs cannot be accessed remotly but will be useful in the case the computer is seized for a criminal investigation.

All this hate towards Windows 8 I see at the moment is without reason. Unless people start posting evidence soon I will have to start calling people bad names...

Even with WarCraft III "not working" I can find no real evidence. Where as with World of WarCraft there is tons of evidence that it runs better (yes, it runs faster) on Windows 8 than on Windows 7. The sites that made this are not biased, stating it performs worse for AMD cards but better on Nvidia and that some games have compatibility bugs (like some game could not run on ultra due to glitchy visuals but still ran).

Could you elaborate a bit? That's complete poop throwing based on nothing.

Other link showing related issues with Win8:
The instructions contained in that link are malacious. Under no circumstances should they be carried out. Instailling a WAN network onto your computer will not fix sound bugs and will open up new security holes to allow people to hack your computer. BattleNet is in no way related to causing sound problems when using WarCraft III as it is an optional mutliplayer service.

It looks like an OS for a smartphone or a tablet, at best.
The UI isn't innovative, the "Fullscreen-everything"-feature is annoying to multitask, Microsoft's "In-App-Ads" is a cheap way to spam users with advertisments and their so-called "Secure Boot" feature is the worst kind of limiting hardware and software I've heard of.
But the main point is:
It looks like total shit.

I'd rather slit my throat before switching to win8.

Oh, and their SmartScreen feature is just another step on M$'s way to monopolize their software along with cloud-computing in order to know everything about their users and be able to view their data (Do you really think anyone claiming he's not accessing your 'private' data is honest? My OVH 'private' server got taken down although OVH 'didn't look at the data'. Bullshit.).

I ran the Upgrade Assistant and 16 out of my 47 programs aren't compatible with Windows 8, among them is Warcraft 3.
I think that this just means that they will not carry over if you upgrade, not that they will not work after upgrade.

I got the same error when upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 with Age of Empires III and I am prety sure that runs on Windows 7.

WarCraft III will not work on the ARM version of Windows 8 for logical reasons. The ARM versions of Windows 8 cannot run x86 compiled applications (as microsoft warns) without an x86 emulator.

Thus yes it is not compatible with all versions of Windows 8 but it is compatible with the Windows 7 continuation of Windows 8 (the x86/x86-64 version).
