Hi guys, I wanted to ask what the current Multiplayer filesize cap is and what I can do to minimize the filesize of different models. For example I've seen nice maps even with really cool WoW models which were below 8 MB in total filesize. If someone could help me that would be nice.

Note: if your map is huge I and others likely won't download it. 128 mb will take something like 20 minutes to download from a standard host bot. Plus that's a lot of hard drive space.

Use space responsibly and don't replace models/textures just to replace them.

I am not aiming at 128mb but probably around 20mb so at least I am not bound to this 8mb bullshit :D

Do your best to keep the file size as low as possible.
Don't import unnecessary models. And if you do, take a look @ their file size. Usually Wow rips are expensive ;)

I am making a multiplayer RPG and I think it has some pretty amazing systems. I only need the WoW models for the selectable characters and because they have so many different animations.

    What.

128 MBs is nothing compared to 5TBs of disc space. Pretty much everyone at this point has at least 500 GBs, if not 1TB.

WC3 may be a bit slow to download maps at times but I don't think expecting 20 minutes for one person to download the map is realistic at all. 5 minutes, at most.

That limits maps to at most 15MB then, 10 MB if you want to cover really slow connections.

At least 1TB of space is so standard and normal at this point that even my shitty PC has 2TBs. 1TB drives are so common people practically give them away half the time or they just come in any PC. That's the only reason why I have 2TBs Lol.
I think you're really, really underestimating what the average connection speed of most of the world is. Even I have 28 down on average and I'm in practically one of the most rural parts of the entire U.S. I could download 128 MBs in like 5 minutes easy even from the slowest and most unreliable file hosts. And actually most maps, even ones that reach as high as 10MBs, I can download in like 15 to 20 seconds easily. The only bottleneck are the bots, but they'll probably start changing soon enough to try and make better use of the higher size cap. (I'd say most bots will probably make sure they're uploading maps to people by at least 5MBs/s eventually which should be more than enough for most maps)

Not 7 years ago they were not. I still use 2*280 GB (RAID1) + 2*500 GB.

Also storage capacity is not everything. Some computers might use a 256 GB SSD for their C drive.

The speed is highly variable. Around the cities it can be very fast. Obviously in the outback it is very slow. No different from here in the UK where someone living at the edge of my town gets only 1 MB/sec at best (if lucky, probably closer to 0.25 MB/sec) where as I get 10 MB/sec.

A 128 MB map should take me just 12 seconds to download. It never will because the source is not capable of uploading at 10 MB/sec. Instead the host robots limit to like 50 KB/sec or something painfully slow. Even my old internet connection which capped out at 1 MB/sec (best possible, usually slower) saturated them.

What I'm thinking is that they'll pretty much have to reevaluate and try to figure out how to raise that cap because undoubtedly map sizes will just continue to grow now that the size limit is so large. People will just stop using their services if another one gets any faster. All it takes is one of them to do it to jump really fucking far ahead of everybody.

Yeah a lot of people have SSDs for their main drive, but that doesn't mean people don't have extra drives for extra storage space. A lot of people will do SSDs for their main and then some standard HDDs for extra space. Like serious 1TB HDDs are so freaking cheap at this point that there is no reason not to have one. 60 bucks is like the maximum, but 45 is more around the average. That's not counting the ones that will undoubtedly be cheaper, as low as 20 or 30, there's bound to be some you could find that low.
