For me it is usually either testing out some concepts(What if a map was like this?), making actual maps, or trying to figure out how something works internally(spellbooks/scaling of stats).
dunno what you mean by "modding".. but for me, I'm usually testing maps that have some concept I could put into my own maps.. like now, I'm testing some SRPG's so that I could find more ideas or concepts to put into my map.. but sometimes, when I'm really bored, I create spells and maps that contain random ideas like Super man vs Hulk mini game or zerg attack..

Surely that pretty much covers every single modding activity possible? Maybe not custom artwork, but "making actual maps" tends to require triggering, terraining, object editing, writing...
So, I guess "making actual maps" is my main focus too. It's just that making actual maps, for me at least, involves doing everything.
