What About a Mentor Program?

Ok, just throwing this out there to see what people think. As we all know there are the gurus of certain fields, be it triggers, jass, terrain, models, etc. Then here are the rookies who 'mire the gurus skills and wish they could learn them.

So what if (New member with idea alert) the Hive maybe thought about starting up a mentor program where the gurus could take a pupil or two under their wing. Now of course there are concerns about wasting people's time which nobody likes but for people who are pretty serious about learning I think it would be really beneficial. It could open up some new positions on the site, and we all like having fancy positions haha not srs

....semi srs.

Me personally I would love to see a mentor program from the jass stuff cuz that is the most appealing but imo most complicated. I'm sure there are plenty of aspiring modelers who would appreciate the program as well. Anywho just a thought, hopefully I can get a bunch of supporters and admin will consider it. Hope you all have a great day! Better yet, have a hive day!

This awfully reminds me of the jass and terraining classes that took place not long ago.

Well those didn't turned out that well since lots of people kept 'flocking' in to get something valuable from those (and motivation got lost along the way).

Mentor huh? Well there are a bunch of tutorials here on the Hive, wc3c.net and The Helper.net which are quite good imo. One has just need to take a peek and have some patience to start learning from 'em.

I'm not that sure how many members would be willing to kill some time and lend a hand for the rookies but who knows. I suppose an extra help won't hurt, thing is that the new user which is eager (assuming that HE IS) to learn something pays attention (I mean ACTUAL attention not just say yes) and not stray away from the path then all could (IN THEORY) work fine.

Mutual respect is needed in this case though (and a whole load of TIME).

Ah shoot I did forget to mention that I agree there are a lot of very useful tutorials available but I think a mentor program would be a bit more personal, which in theory I think might help someone pay more attention than they would reading a tutorial and maybe get frustrated and quit but I do agree with what youre saying

Create a map, do the tutorial to get what you want to learn, play around in the editor, TEST TEST TEST stuff, if you get stuck, just ask a question on the forums.

Most of the tutorials are written good, if you get stuck -> ask a question.
If people don't have enough patience to read the tutorials, I'm pretty sure they won't have any patience for mapping when they will get stuck at problems, which everyone do from time to time.

I like where this is coming from/going... But I'm not sure it'll happen.

If anything, there's more like an informal system like this already going on all over the place. This is a reasonably friendly, inter-connected community; once you start to build a niche (be helpful, speak up, contribute (either in terms of resources, or tutorials, (or none of the above, just post a lot (LIKE ME), etc), and stuff like that), you'll naturally start to connect with like-minded peeps & an interconnected web of mutual helpingness will be engendered.

Just yesterday Direfury uploaded a series of images & descriptions for his modeling process for a particular user, (ostensibly/apparently) just for kicks. And the other day I was having some trouble with wanting to learn UV Wrapping... And I had 2 different modelers helps me (Sellenisko 'opened my eyes' to the new & improved MDLvis, and Hayate jumped onto a Skype video chat to run through some tips-n-tricks for me. <3 <3).

That's basically "mentoring", but I didn't ask for it or anything. It just kinda... happens.

So feel free to ask around, I guess? But I'm not sure people will want to make a big ol' official "Mentor" dealie.

I could be wrong.

I often am.

I often overuse the [Enter] key.

Obviously. : )

The problem here is, once - if - this get's implemented, there would be an imbalance in mentors and students. How many people want to sacrifice their free time to personally mentor strangers. Not many I'm guessing. How many people want to learn more from the world editor? A hell of a lot!

Besides, if you don't just want to go searching for tutorials because you might get frustrated, why not ask someone to mentor you instead of pushing to implement a program? Why not ask in our forums about specific questions you have?

It's, "Have a Hivetastic day!" :ogre_hurrhurr:

I've helped people a lot in the past.
Even in person over chat before and even have done some requests.

It's not more of just getting one mentor but instead more of just asking around for help in the right places and in the right situations.

If you get someone to stay with you for ages helping you out to create a project, he/she is more of a partner so ehh..

Well, if we talk about mentoring, Kyrbi0 has good points (the first part about unofficial mentoring), so do Heinvers.

Basically, if we have good communication with others here, we can ask them for help and guide us. And, in this term we also aren't forced as if it's a school or class or anything. This means we gain the knowledge but we can save it for later.

Official mentoring.... I agree with Heinvers, Jass Class and Terrain Class are good examples of chance for such.

I prefer the method mentioned by Kyrbi0 (unofficial mentoring), it's practical, simple and isn't forced at all. No homework, just guides. Honestly, I also have done unofficial mentoring for awhile now, helping people with their map issues and triggering issue, and from my experience, it works well.

In the past, I also receive some unofficial mentoring from some talented members, since my expertise is triggering, I used to get lots of guide from Jass users. And they're helpful and their knowledge that they share are very useful.
