STATUS: Poll Closed (ended 27-June-2016)

Instructions: you need to cast at least 2 votes on this poll. First one to define the type of Techtree contest that we should have (Paired or Solo), and the next one to vote for one or more themes that you would like to participate with. After poll expires (8 days) the type of contest selected, with the most voted theme will be hosted. You are not required to post your reasons to explain your vote, however it is strongly recomended.

Contingencies: if theme or type of contest ends up in a draw, a shorter new poll will be started lasting (3 days).

The themes taken from the Theme discussion thread.

Contest Type
Description

Solo
Single author for each entry, no collaboration besides the traditional testing and advising.

Paired
Contestants can join solo or with a team mate. In other words Optionally Paired.

Theme
Description

Alliances
Create a new faction based on an alliance not seen on the vanilla (Original) Factions of Warcraft (Example: Tauren and Human, Gnolls and Orcs, etc...)

Alternate Timeline
Describe a single or series of closely related events that have changed your timeline. Then create a faction that would exist in the present time on that alternate world. The faction and all its races must be already present in vanilla Warcraft, so no extraterrestrial beings nor races that are foreign to the Warcraft Universe.

Ancient Race
Create a faction that describies the origins of any of the vanilla W3 races. For example Night Elves pre-Sundering, Hunter Orcs in Draenor, etc.

Elements
Create a faction based on an Elemental focus, using one or more of the four base elements (Fire, Water, Earth and Air).

Evil Faction
Create faction that is a pure evil. Dark spirits, demons, mad scientists, or maybe a great looking civilization of light worshiping people that is corrupted from inside. "Evil will always find a way"

Improved Melee
Continue the evolution of one of the 4 main factions and enhance its techtree. Remnants of Undead and Night Elf, Humans after rebuilding their kingdom, Orcs after stabilizing and creating a new civilization, etc.

Mirror-verse
Reality turns upside down! Down is up and the poor become the rich. Take one faction from the Warcraft universe and shift their alignment. If they were evil before, now they're angels or vice-versa. Eg: The Burning Legion becomes the Shining Legion.

Nomad
Create a faction which their main system is like the Night Elven or heaven's fall's Zear Fallen in that their race has mobility at their side.

Revolution
Take one of the secondary races within the 4 W3FT vanilla factions and make a fully fledged Techtree for them. For example: Ancient's Army, Tauren's Clan, Dwarf Principality, Nerubian Kingdom, etc.

Techno-magic
Advanced technology meets magic! Reinterpret one of the vanilla factions as though they would exist in a futuristic universe where magic and science exist side by side. Example: Dalaran Corporation.

I would suggest even if it doesn't end in a draw that another poll is made with the top 3 choices so people who voted for the choices that didn't make it to the top 3 can recast their votes. We will get a better picture with the results that way.

I do wish it was an open poll but oh well. Voted for Paired and Alliance. I really thought paired option would attract more attention since it is really time consuming for just one guy to finish a full techtree.
Believe me as a guy who did a paired techtree contest, it only complicates things and actually ends up taking more time because you constantly need to communicate with each other and allign your ideas together.

What do you mean by open poll? Currently you can see who voted for each theme by clicking on the number of votes it has, or are you refering to a poll where you can change your vote?

PS: I also wanted to have this contestes Optionally Paired, have more flexibility on the the teams bringing more people to the contest. I know people that would only joined with a partner due to time contrains.

Yeah, I'm a bit dismayed that the Paired option is so unpopular. Doing this solo is a mountain of work, but the thing that in my opinion is the biggest strain is brainstorming. Sometimes you want to create something, but the idea feels half-backed or just plain unappealing, so you just sit there and try to think of something and come up empty-handed. Having a [motivated] team mate would make this process a lot easier, seeing as two minds have a better chance of coming up with interesting stuff.

That, and not to mention, if two team mate with specialised skillsets form a team, you can refine your submission far better than you could have solo.

As I said, finding someone to work with is not something I'd look forward to.
But I can only speak for myself.

Your opponents submissions will be better as well, thus nothing change.

You will after you make a race all by yourself @_@

Good, I encourage people to make better things.

Hey I would happy with just a dedicated tester if anything. Bounce ideas from each other. Don't know about you guys but there is that bitter feeling for me when I finish the race and then nothing. Kinda why I bothered in the first place in last contest to play and properly comment on each entry. I'll do it again unless I am allowed to become a judge for this one.

I feel like people think that a paired contest means more work? The scope remains the same as it would be if it were a solo contest, considering working as a pair is, as the description says, OPTIONAL. Solo entries are still very much valid. This also takes away the ambiguity of whether you can request models specifically for the contest, and gives more appropriate credit to the 3D artist.

That being said, as VeljkoM said above, you don't even need a dedicated 3D artist. Paired just means you can work up to 2 people. Who does what is irrelevant.

It means more time wasted on waiting for the other guy to reply/test/give ideas (which also goes both ways). It IS more work considering you have to stop your progress and wait for a response from another person. Like I said before, unless you can get a good communication channel with another person, pairing is a giant waste of time. Not to mention if one of the pairing teams drops out of the contest it means 2 people drop out and you end the contest up by having 2 entries, 3 at max. This has already happened. Twice.

Even years ago when the hive had more people doing maps paired contests were ending with far less entries. I can't imagine what would be that like now.

This sounds like the contests were being approached in the wrong way to me. You shouldn't have two people doing the same work, it's all about specialisation. One person will do the code, and one will do the 3D models. You don't have to wait on one person to do something to continue work. The ideas can come from both parties and with things like Google Drive, working in concert, even if you have crazy timezone differences, is not difficult at all.

All that being said, might I point to the description of the Paired option once again:
Contestants can join solo or with a team mate. In other words Optionally Paired.

If you don't want to work with other people, then don't.

Also in case you're not used to GMT/UTC timezone labels, here's a chart that will help you easily identify your timezone. Also, if you're wondering, GMT and UTC are, for all intents and purposes, the same thing. Example, GMT + 4 == UTC + 4

@Astaroth Zion you should probably paste the BBCode for the table you made just so people can easily copy-paste it themselves.

Great Idea, will just steal your table, hehe.
